Eiko Ishibashi's soundtrack to Drive My Car - Lovely plaintive piano led instrumental stuff. Bit of Jim O'Rourke involvement too on pedal steel and vibes.

Recently found this band from India on youtube, and it got me thinking that there has to be many others around the world that just haven't got the global viewing that they would deserve.

I really enjoyed the new Cat Power album. Love the production and her voice is beautiful. Some interesting song choices too.

Haven't listened to anything else from this year yet but really looking forward to the new Exek album out on Castle Face in a couple of weeks.

Yes. I really enjoyed my second listen to Hop Up today. I like the Mark Hollis from Talk Talk like vocals, especially in the second half of the album.

Listening to it right now. It’s great. If you like the singles, the album tracks are very much more of the same. I’ll need to give it a proper listen with headphones on to appreciate the lyrics though. Tall Poppies has instantly grabbed me as a standout track.

They’re supposed to be a bit good live too.

Not sure I get the hype. There are loads of bands doing what they do.

They are certainly doing the promo work to get a number one though.

Lots of the same punk rock vibes that Klamydia (yes, it translates as chlamydia, and yes they have said that what seemed fun at the time, was not the best name to choose for a band) translates, thank you.

The first album of 2022 that I've listened to that I've loved, and my first real recommendation for the year because she's a brilliant artist that deserves more exposure is "While Your Heart's Still Beating" by Kyla La Grange. She was an up-and-comer in the early 2010s who never properly took off, and she hasn't released an album since 2014, so this is a pleasantly surprising return.

Hard to figure out who to compare her to. It's a kind of indie dream pop vibe. I'd say possibly fans of the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Angel Olsen or Adrianne Lenker might enjoy this.

Interesting article.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I can't disagree with any of it, it's all really well argued. And yet, I still enjoy Yard Act... They're nowhere near the same league as Sleaford Mods or Pulp, but they do have some properly funky hooks.

There is one line that might make me reappraise them though: "Bad bands can toxify the good by speeding up the process by which a genre becomes exhausted or defined by cliché."

This is an excellent point, and makes me think I need to be more selective for the sake of not tolerating mediocrity.

I also agree with what he says about Self Esteem.

His observations about BCNR have already dated badly though, seeing as Isaac announced the other day that he's left the band.

Listened to the album now and was just about to write that it sounds alright but that the singer sounds like Stephin Merritt but is actually not able to sing. Like, there's nothing there, just wisping.

Wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Glowing reviews always make me weary but it sounded quite polished and very epic.

I listened to the new Animal Collective record earlier and it sounded great.

When Bright Green Field came out last year, I wondered how on earth they would do Boy Racers live. Then I saw them at Printworks in September... it was amazing, and I've been desperate to hear a recording of that performance ever since. So pleased they included it in this set. Simply awesome.

Love KEXP. Cheryl is such a great host/DJ. She can make anyone feel comfortable.

The best sound I've ever heard was when Jeans Team played at a place called Debaser, a place that recently opened, in Malmö in 2007. It was just perfect, everything was weighted and balanced, but also hit you in the face like a truck. I had to ask their engineer (it was only the two of them and this lad) how it was even possible to make it sound so good as I've never heard anything like it. He said that he didn't need to do much at all, the equipment was brand new. He just tweaked some things and that was it.

KEXP surely have great engineers, but I think they're even better in getting the right equipment.

Given it a few listens, really like Running Away. Does feel like it needs a lot of digestion though.

Quite like these, heard this track last year before Green Man but I missed them on the day.

Predictably, the Jake Xerxes Fussell has probably been my most listened to LP so far this year.

Also enjoying Modern Nature 'Island of Noise' and Imarhan 'Aboogi' (the latter with guest appearance from Gruff Rhys)

Oh and Eiko Ishibashi 'Drive My Car' soundtrack.

Predictably, the Jake Xerxes Fussell has probably been my most listened to LP so far this year.

Will give this a go tomorrow. Can't get into the Modern Nature album. I tried - and I love all the lads he's assembled on it, and the music tbf - but his singing does nothing for me. Might try again.

Black Country New Road is the same. Brilliant right up to the moment yer man opens his mouth to tell you how smart he is. Heard he's left the band. Good.

Loving this released today. A 1980 reissue of a post punk compilation from that seething hotbed of punk fervour in East Hertfordshire.
