Well, when you cannot get the attention you crave by positive means (winning things) it's easy to then embrace misery because moaning about it brings attention. It's not positive attention, but it's still attention, and beggars can't be choosers.
When you don't work hard and clever enough to experience joy, it's easy to, instead, embrace anger. At least it's something to get the pulse racing. Nothing positive but, again, beggars can't be choosers.
