There were very high hopes for him. As for most English batsmen of his era, he had some horrible bowling attacks to deal with in his early tests. Think he made his debut against peak Alan Donald (and big Fannie).
Often happens that. A young player's emergence will coincide with a fearsome era of fast bowling. Frank Hayes was a brilliant Lancashire batter when I was a kid. Big hopes. He started well at Test level but then ran into Roberts and Holding, Lillee and Thompson.
