Trent is fucking brilliant.

The only debate that should surround him is where he stands amongst the best footballers on the planet, not whether or not he is England’s best right back.

Not managed to get to a game this season yet as our little one was born back in April and so the missus has taken control of her season ticket again (I had a great run last season!), but when I go on Tuesday night I cannot wait to see Trent play. He’s worth the entry fee.
Rafa Benitez: "I’ll always keep in my heart the good times I’ve had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager."

Trent's problem with England is that Southgate has picked a system and is picking players he thinks best suits his system. The problem for England is that the system or Southgate version of the system, doesn't favour England's better players like Trent and Kane. England actually have a decent mix of players but Southgate is sticking with those who consistently let him down, Maguire and Shaw come to mind.

I don't understand why he's playing everywhere? He's not even any good in CM owing to his lack of ability to play on the half turn and his lack of press resistance. But he's there, and everywhere else. He did a play a beauty of a through ball from the 6 position to Salah (it bounced off him, which is pretty standard at the moment) but Thiago and Henderson are good deep passers of the ball already. We don't need to absolutely ruin our shape for the sake of him getting it centrally and deep.

He needs to return the basics and start being a fullback first. His positional ineptitude is killing us every single time. Once they get past him (which they do with ease) he's basically out of any position to defend and he doesn't bother to try get into a position to defend.

Either playing him as an 8 or a right back.  Not both, it's ridiculous and he's all over the shop.

Passage of play around minute 25 sums it all up. He is for some reason playing a striker? What is going on? Who is responsible for this shite?

It's like we see the lack of athleticism and creativity in midfield, so we've told Trent, "Go on then, be an attacking midfielder."  But we don't have cover for him when he's out of position, and he still has to defend since he's still playing RB.

It's all over the place.

I have no idea where he is being asked to play. He is all over the place. He was best at the right with those crosses. Why break something that was working so well.

He was playing CF at least 3 or 4 times in that half. It’s like Klopp has decided to play our #10 from RB. Trent was playing as left-sided #8 twice, too. Klopp is a genius, but this RB free role seems like madness.

Him in this new role is making our defence look shambolic.

Can we not get a right sided midfielder to do the job instead inside and have Trent back to overlapping whipping crosses in like he used to do with such aplomb when our defensive system was solid.

Need to find his role and fast.

Even when he's in position, he's making mistakes.  Mitoma got past him multiple times after he came on as a substitute.  Straight up 1 on 1 defending, and Trent was second best.

After Ali saved Welbeck's header, Trent was in position to clear but miskicked it straight into the air, allowing Brighton to keep the pressure on.

Even when he's positioned well, he's still not defending well at all.

I mean a blind man can figure out how to get past Trent down the line, 1-1 just send a man running pass him, he doesn’t pick that person up and once beaten does absolutely nothing to get into a position to actually effect play.

Rinse repeat.

Yes. How would walker or James play in our system. No one seems to realize how hard it is to play in our system as a FB and both of the aforementioned cannot do it. I don't think he's being helped by this new tactical tweak where he finds himself CM half the times. Imagine being that high already now central, now having to track back if we lose the ball in the terrible situation vs a fullback who's already marauding forward then also being 1v2 because henderson/elliot is no where to be found. That's a very tough ask. Not even robertson/tsmikas is asked to do that.

Should have been subbed for Gomez as soon we went 3-2 up.

He wasn't out of position when talent like Mitoma was taking the piss out of him; he just simply wasn't good enough.

On current form Martinelli will break him.

But, he's not alone, defensively we are utter shit.

I wonder if we might be better off with Gomez playing at RB for a spell of games. We seem far too easy to score against, and I hate to join the "Trent can't defend" narrative, but a lot of our goals come from play on his side or things that he doesn't do very well. Although he is a world class player, at the moment his form looks shot and he looks one of the weakest players in the team.

Looks like he’s running in quicksand out there. Teams target him week in week out and get joy out of it. Think he was at fault or partly at fault for every single one of their goals today. I’m dreading to see what martenelli and whoever city play left wing will do to him. Hell even Ryan Kent will give him a pasting midweek.

I'm not disputing the fact that he's being asked to do too much and seems to be all over the place - and by design from the looks of it - as well. It's that he can't even do the basics right at the moment and doesn't really look bothered.

Really really bad today. Everything came from his side and I’m not sure where we’re trying to play him? It’s like we willingly completely vacate the right back spot. It looks like he’s running in mud every time a winger runs after him too.

We've seen stretches like this from Trent before, everytime his England selection falls into question his form goes down the toilet.

But I also think Klopp doesn't protect him enough. He keeps throwing him out there when his form is down without any protection at all. Think today, our midfield (Fabinho in particular) could have dropped back more often into the centre of the backline so that Matip could go and cover Trent when he's upfield. We are obstinate in playing offensive football without first shoring up the back, meanwhile it's killing Trent's confidence.
