Good tweet, Lee.
Someone needs to clone a picture of Westwood into that and send it to him.

Just saw Poulter and Westwood and some no mark being unable to answer a simple question about whether they have any moral limits. What a spineless Tory crew golfers are. Hardly news I know. Is there any more solidly white middle-class sport than golf? I doubt it. What a bunch of greedy reactionary gits.

Here it is. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/golf/61738171

Moral failures. Sporting ones too probably.

Poulter has always been a massive selfish c*nt so hardly surprising he's joined

Does that include Majors,

How many Saudi tournaments will they play in? Then a lot more time at home with their families. They’ll be begging to rejoin the Tour before too long!

Sadly not. The PGA Tour is a separate entity to the PGA of America.

The PGA of America owns/runs the USPGA tournament
The US Masters is run by the Augusta National Golf Club
The US Open by US Golf Association (USGA)
(The Open by the R&A, not the European Tour)

The PGA Tour organises a calendar of tournaments, organising some itself but with others organised by other organisations/clubs.

The best weapon the established golf associations have is to ban any defecting player from the Majors. As well as missing the most prestigious and most-publicised tournaments, they would be out of the public focus, with players losing sponsorship income.

Sadly, the USGA has already said it will allow these shitbags to still compete at the US Open.

Yeah I firmly believe there is two sides to him. Big Darren up for the craic, cigar in one hand, guinness in the other. Everyone is "a very very good friend of mine" but I would well believe he is a grumpy fucker.

I did have that conversation with a certain business man in Portrush, I wont say what his business is but he said some of the golfers have been in. Harrington is grand, McDowell is ok, McGinley the nicest of the lot but he says as soon as Clarke comes through the door you know whether he is in a mood or not. He did hint more often than not he is a grumpy fucker.

From a few posts I remember around ryder cup 16 there was some saying he was an arse at some charity event they were at, and one claimed to have witnessed him telling a child asking for a picture/autograph to "fuck off"

That was me (but not the fuck off bit!)

I wont go into too much detail as it would take too long but at the Irish Open in 2000 I saw him turn away a small boy who asked him to sign his hat outside the club house, no one around, just Clarke there with a pint and a cigar and he told the lad to go away. That was 20mins after walking off the 18th green signing stuff in front of the camera. He's well known for being a prick off camera, your golf travel did a comp where you get to play with Darren, only one hole each, but you 'played' with Darren and then there was supposed to be a dinner and QA afterwards for all winners. He apparently had the arse on the course, didn't really chat to anyone and then fucked off without staying for the meal or QA.

Ive seen loads of people say similar stuff on twitter or golf forums, refusing autographs or pictures (I know you cant do them all but its a common thing for him, even with small kids). The thing that gets me is everyone thinks hes great fun, good old Darren always up for a pint of the black stuff. fuck off, hes a prick!!

Really want Europe to win the RC, but cant stand him

I had a feeling it was but didnt want to wrongly accuse

I have spoke it over with my brother in law who is a big golf fan and even worked with Darrens 2nd wife Alison, he said she is beautiful inside and out. Obviously when his first wife died it was awful, I read a book he did on the 2006 ryder cup, I honestly dont know how he did it. Still get goosebumps watching him go to the first tee and hit a thundering drive.

Always felt awful for him over that and always will, but still I wouldnt like to meet him.

I did see him at Portrush golf club one day, he actually bashed a golf cart into a bollard by mistake, there was no one around and he then went to a putting green but I just left him, thought Clarke is grumpy anyway but interrupting his practice would be just asking for trouble.

Not a massive Barney Ronay fan, but this is spot on.

Quote
In their naked self-interest, LIV golfers are being refreshingly true to the sport’s roots

Barney Ronay

Golf can offer sublime entertainment but is not a sport with any deep sense of social conscience. Why pretend otherwise?

The centre cannot hold. All that is pure is gone. They’re shaving Aslan’s mane up there at the Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead. And it has, of course, been genuinely shocking to see the grand old community game of professional golf, with its deep social ties, the beating heart of our post-industrial towns, reduced so easily to a row of shrugging men in leisure wear doing stuff on their own for money.

This is after all the people’s game, or at least the People Like Us game, still played on every cobbled street and in every playground, providing that playground is at least 300 yards wide and fenced from public access; a place where all you need is the ball, the green grass, hundreds of pounds of equipment and not to be in the inner city. Who could have guessed that professional golf would be so vulnerable to greed and self-interest?

Yes, it’s time to laugh at the golfers as they pretend, but also don’t pretend, to care about things. It was hard not to be gripped by the press conference exchanges before the first LIV Golf event this week. The new pop-up circuit is run by Saudi Arabia’s PIF as part of Vision 2030, the cultural project that is also a way of buying influence, outreach and soft power: art, music, sport, a football club.

Golf has duly coughed up its own platoon of freelancers and old stagers with a grudge. And it is already a more-ish spectacle. Here is a pin-headed frat boy wrestling with self-interest and social duty. Here is a row of sullen baseball caps looking not just baffled but outraged at being asked actual questions about actual things by that small group of British sports news journalists who are still willing to do this.

It may have been an essentially futile exercise, like asking a horse its opinion on the novels of Anthony Trollope. But it was also oddly refreshing, and indeed a surprisingly useful exchange.

I don’t propose to analyse here what this might do to the PGA or to discuss in granular detail how all this affects the chances of Holden Buttplug III at the prestigious Stinger Missile Systems Open. Firstly because other people will do this much better. And secondly because in many ways it doesn’t matter.

Golf is not a sport with any deep sense of public ownership or social conscience. George Orwell called it “an inherently snobbish game, which causes whole stretches of countryside to be turned into carefully guarded class preserves,” and golf has never really done much to prove this is not the case.

Its value lies in providing entertainment, otherworldly beauty and a level of sporting difficulty so mind-bogglingly extreme it has a kind of alien quality. Given golf is by its nature an exclusionary, high-cost pursuit, does it really matter where this happens or for whose benefit? As long as a pastel coloured shape is standing on a deep green wash performing a sublime calculus of arc and swing, as long as there’s a fizz and a gasp and the miracle of feel and flight, golf is fulfilling its one public service, which is to provide opaque but compelling TV product.

The obvious counter to this is that seeing the propaganda needs of a bloody regime normalised and explained away by people who run sport degrades our public life. The message is that anything and anyone can be bought. Dress it up in moral relativism. Cash the cheques.

On the other hand golf is also providing a service here. Stripped of the pretence that this is all for the fans or has any cultural purpose, it is in effect a refined version of all elite sport. Here is a thing that exists purely to enrich those who control it with no need, unlike other sports, to dress it up or apologise.

So we watched as one by one players at the Centurion Club pretended to have sound reasons for joining the breakaway, and then just gave up and effectively said it was for the money. Phil Mickelson looked notably baffled and sweaty, projecting all the calm moral authority of an evangelical Republican presidential candidate squinting into the police cruiser headlights as he’s hauled out of a Las Vegas ditch in a rubber gimp vest.

Mickelson said he was, like, really worried about the fate of Jamal Khashoggi, because that was totally bad, and in the same breath talked about how he’s really enjoying hiking and skiing and improving his work-life balance. Lee Westwood talked about people being “scared of change”.

Ian Poulter genuinely didn’t seem to understand the questions, although his sponsors EA Sports might struggle to reconcile their own recent statement declaring support for LGBT+ people around the world and issuing “a call for love and joy in the face of hate and bigotry”, while also supporting Poulter as he promotes a country where homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, torture or execution.

In the end most of them basically admitted that this is about personal interest. And in this sense golf is at least offering clarity and the only really honest response for any sport that takes money from a nation-state intent on laundering its reputation. Instead it has become habit, in the style of Amanda Staveley at Newcastle United, to pretend that this is all somehow progressive or iconoclastic or based on spreading happiness.

Openness is what is required. Sport needs a genuine reset in how it deals with its use as a nation-state tool. Until now this has been an open frontier, without policy or guidance or an adequate vocabulary. So we get lost in spin and whataboutery – the arms trade happens? Is this now the standard? – not to mention endless exhausting contradictions. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé will preach about human rights, while promoting Abu Dhabi and Qatar. Jos Buttler will wear the Aramco Orange Cap and also a T-shirt covered in slogans about tolerance.

We cling to words like “sportswashing”, which is too weak and also inaccurate, because this is in the end hard power not tinkering with a reputation. Sport needs to be clear on how far it wishes to go down that road. With their shrugs, their nihilism, their naked self-interest, the golfers of the LIV are at least being honest with us.

Only if the plan involves making money. They're just sports laundering the money they're making from the obscene oil prices.

'They should be banned' from majors: Jamal Khashoggi's fiancée criticizes LIV golfers

Phil Mickelson and other pro golfers who have competed in the inaugural, Saudi-backed LIV Golf event in London suggest it’s a matter of sports and business, not politics.

Hatice Cengiz sees it differently.

She was engaged to Jamal Khashoggi, the exiled Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist, when he was murdered in 2018.  A declassified U.S. intelligence report in 2021 accused Saudi Arabia's crown prince and de facto leader, Mohammed bin Salman, of approving an operation "to capture or kill" Khashoggi.

Salman controls the Saudi Public Investment Fund that bankrolled LIV Golf, which has used sign-on fees and prize money to woo players such as Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and 17 players in all from the PGA Tour.

“If they still carry on and play as if everything is normal, then they should be banned from playing in the world’s major tournaments,’’ Cengiz told USA TODAY Sports via email. “This will show that there are consequences for supporting murderers, and it will show the murderers that they are not escaping justice.’’

The PGA Tour suspended all 17 golfers before Thursday as play started in the 54-hole LIV Golf event, with $4 million going to the winner. The field included 48 players.

It’s unclear if anyone will heed Cengiz’s wishes when it comes to major championships.

The U.S. Open begins Thursday, and the United States Golf Association has confirmed that all players who qualified for the tournament will be eligible.

The British Open, scheduled to be played July 14-17, has not announced whether players who participated in the Saudi-backed event will be eligible to compete at major championship held at St. Andrews.

The Masters and PGA Championship have not announced whether players competing in LIV Golf events will remain eligible for those two majors.

Regardless, Cengiz skepticism about those involved with LIV Golf.

"If the players and organizers say they oppose human rights violations, they should act on that,’’ she said. “Otherwise their words are empty – only said to try to make themselves look better and not to change anything in Saudi Arabia. They should be insisting on justice for Jamal and the countless persons targeted and abused in the Kingdom. And they should not be participating in sports paid for by the very abusers.’’

Cengiz said she plans to be at the Saudi Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday for the unveiling a new street sign for Jamal Khashoggi Way. She will be joined by two members of Congress and speakers from Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), an organization founded by Khashoggi.

Abdullah Alaoudh, a research director at DAWN, said Mickelson and others competing in the LIV Golf events are being “used to whitewash the crimes of the Saudi government.’’

“Agreeing to be part of this is basically agreeing to help (the crown prince) rehabilitate his image in the international stage, in the cultural stage and the sports stage,’’ Alaoudh said. “And agreeing to be used directly by the Saudi government in their own propaganda to say that they host such events, that they can do whatever they want and get away with murder, literally.’’

Viewing interest has waned on Day 2 of LIV  Tour.

Yesterday, through 12:45pm ET, coverage averaged 91,000 on YouTube.

Today through 12:45pm ET?

Fewer than half the audience — 43,300 viewers.

I'd imagine a good chunk of viewers they got was from people who oppose it but just wanted to have a look out of curiosity. Bit like how I switched on GB News when it first aired.
And if the rain stops, and everything's dry.. she would cry, just so I could drink tears from her eyes.

US Open starts on Thursday, great article here on how hard it is to qualify for the non pros, even if you're off scratch.
