Pre-Match Build-up / Atmosphere:-

The media were widely reporting that Rafa would lose his job as manger if Liverpool did not beat Marseille in a raucous Stade Velodrome to qualify for the lucrative knockout stages of the Champions League - just months after reaching the 2007 CL Final. Rafa previously calling out the owners Gillet & Hicks on undelivered promises, lack of funds, being too slow to act, and hollow statements had not gone down well with them - and the owners' lies and supposed 'plans' were already unravelling...

superb result, thankfully Rafa will be out of the limelight a bit after that, but flattered to deceive against a nothing side

if we play like that against United we will get dicked by the same score

and no, I am NOT kidding

scores on the doors, 7 being the start point bearing in mind the result :

Reina - 7.5 - what little he had to do did it well

Arbeloa - 7 - will probably never play against an easier opponent than Zenden for the rest of his career, mind

Carragher - 7.5

Hyypia - 7 - but looked terribly cumbersome at times and against United he would have got ripped a new one

Riise - 4 - fuck me, he visibly worsens in front of your very eyes, he's gone beyond alehouse into some new type of establishment, like a crack den or sumpn. I'll bet anyone on this forum a grand that if you ask Riise what 'composure' means he'll say it's when you can't go for a shite. Fucking get rid of him Rafa.

Benayoun - 9 - my MOTM - fucking worked his arse off all night and if anyone should have been taken off with 20 to go and saved for United it's him, not Kewell, not Torres and not Kuyt. One minute he was in the opposition third trying to link in and the next he was back making a crucial interception. He's gonna challenge Torres for my POTY if he carries on like this, and he will

Mascherano - 6.5 - anonymous. I can only imagine how much of a new arse we would have ripped Marseille if Alonso had played tonight.

Gerrard - 9 - high scores for the initial thrust and goal and nice disciplined performance but made a few unnecessary errors.

Kewell - 7 - one piece of vintage Kewell to lay in Torres but apart from that he still looks WAY off being fit or quick enough to play for us. It's not when he's on the ball, nobody can deny his quality on it, but it's off the ball.

Kuyt - 8.5 - usual mixed bag from Kuyt, including his trademark appalling first touch nearly getting Gerrard hospitalised within 2 seconds of kick off. Made up for it with a neat finish for the third and worked hard of course.

Torres - 7 - one moment of sheer brilliance for the goal but a lot of sloppy play after that. One moment where he entered the box on the right in the second half before hitting a lazy cross into the full back pissed me right off. Toughen up in the tackle ffs lad, you're built like a brick shithouse and you go to ground like Heskey did. You COULD be THE NUMBER 1 most feared striker in Europe if you concentrate and play for 90 (that's NINETY) minutes and cut out the sloppy shit. Are you reading this, eh ? EH ? No, of course you're not, it's past yer bedtime. Sweet dreams.

subs :

Fabio Aurelio - contributed the sum total of his initials. Ta. Still, at least you didn't get injured eh.

Babel - there's a player playing for us who REALLY COULD be the most feared attacking player in Europe. It isn't Torres. It's this lad. Someone tell me that you watch this lad's feet and balance and don't see a quicker version of Zidane. If he played up front with Torres come the weekend we might just see the Manc shite off in good style. He won't though will he, he'll be on the bench...
Erm wow!

The final?! Make that the next round! Me and a mate were talking recently about our Athens adventure and we both amusingly came to the conclusion that if the blue shite got to the UEFA final they would try and claim that it was more of an adventure than Istanbul or Athens.

Well, done Redmen, normal service is resumed and I never doubted that it would be any other way.

Babel - still hasn't scored a meaningful goal yet, but customarily comes on to finish off routs which is fuckign hilarious. Took his goal brilliantly tonight.

Liverpool's first team is absolutely deadly. Bring on United.

This is what I posted earlier

"Shame really. He is the only commentator on television that makes any effort to make some tactical comments about the game he's watching. Graham Taylor on 5Live another one. Has a reputation as a bumbling old fool but is actually one of the better commentators around."

He gets a lot of stick for mis pronouncing names. So what. It adds a bit of [unintentional] humour to his comments. Better than bloody Lawro or Alan Smith, Andy Gray etc. who usually have fuck all to say
It's wonderful, it's marvellous, it's 3-3

The final?! Make that the next round! Me and a mate were talking recently about our Athens adventure and we both amusingly came to the conclusion that if the blue shite got to the UEFA final they would try and claim that it was more of an adventure than Istanbul or Athens.

Its to be held in Manchester this year.....

Yeah but I want them to get to the final, the taste of glory within their reach, only to be taken away at the final step of the road.....beautiful

After you win 0-4 I don't know how anyone can justify slating players. Some people have far too much free time and need to eat more fibre so put their free time concentrating on other types of sh*t.

Best player on the park was arguably Gerrard, a real captains performance and disciplined especially after the first 10 seconds.

Kewell played better and looks to be getting some form back and is only lacking a goal, but even not fully fit or lacking a yard of pace he is still a quality footballer and still the best option on the left.

Torres is getting better and there is still scope for improvement to his all round game and am so glad he is playing for us and not the Mancs, Arse or Chelsea.

Finally on a different note with Masher and Gerrard on current form, if we had Alonso back, how would he get in the team?

I used to think Andy Townsend was a complete tool. But i am beginning to like him more and more. I reckon he might just have a soft spot for the reds too. The ONLY pundit that dicounts things like rotation and other boring shite like that and gives us the CREDIT we often deserve.

Aside from Agger presumably regaining his place back from Hyypia, I'd say that is probably the most balanced Liverpool team I've seen in a long time.  I know Rafa has had a reputation for rotating players, but even he knows that's as close as he's been able to get to his preferred starting 11 this season.

The front six worked as a defensive unit providing the platform for the back four who actually looked like they coasted through the game.  I can't really remember us being stretched.  Credit must go to Benayoun and Kewell who did as good a job in the wide areas as good as any combination of the two I've seen this season.

The only question now is with Mascherano; it's he or Alonso who are vying for the defensive midfield position.  Besides from the result, which was a very favourable one, is Rafa close to finding the perfect balance in the team?

I think Masch and Alonso will team up in the middle, with Gerrard ahead of them in a 4-2-1-3 or on the right in a 4-4-2.

This was the attacking line-up that is the best for us. Two pacy and mobile forwards + two wingers of the same type = problems for the opposition defenders.
Crouch up front means the pace of attacks is lower. Pennant on the wing means the same (strange as it should be the opposite, but that would be if he played the same way he did at Birmingham), so we need the tactics used today to score the first goal (after which it becomes easier). The line-up can be different (Voronin/Babel could play instead of Kuyt/Kewell, etc.) but the tactics must be based on swift attacks, which unsettle the defenders.

That's how i love to see us set up.

Loved that tonight. Early goals help but all the group winners will be shitting themselves about drawing us.

Is it our turn to repay Milan for their good fortune this year ?

Tonight's line up was obviously our stongest, since it's the first time I've managed a perfect 11 on Fantasy Rafa.

I loved Beckenbauer's comment over here on German TV. He said that we'd done well after our early results, then said, 'Thank god Liverpool have qualified'.

Great play from all the lads - fantastic. This is the season for battering teams, totally dismantling them. Defend from the front and goals from all over the place.

Always liked Henry Winter. Top man. Was on LFC TV being interviewed in Marseille with Claire earlier, saying boss things about us.

Rafa Benitez reignites brilliant Liverpool

by Henry Winter in Marseille

Marseille (0) 0 Liverpool (2) 4

It is on magical evenings like this that Liverpool must dream of lifting the European Cup not focusing regretfully on the Carling Cup. Liverpool's season is very much alive and kicking strongly following this magnificent display of counter-attacking football that blew Marseille away.

The Mistral that swept into this ancient port last night originated on the Mersey. "Aux Armes" chanted the defiant locals. "Au Revoir" retorted the visitors. Marseille simply did not know what hit them. French defenders kept collapsing in the teeth of a gale whipped up by Steven Gerrard, so often the scriptwriter of Liverpool's most dramatic moments. Fernando Torres was not far behind in his unrelenting excellence.

Each player was outstanding. Each struck early. Each represents a vivid reason why Liverpool can be so formidable. The irrepressible pair cut the French defence to little orange-and-blue ribbons that floated away on the bitter Provencal wind. Marseille's hapless centre-halves, Gael Givet and Julien Rodriguez, were lambs to a slaughter orchestrated by Gerrard and Torres.

Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel added breakaway goals in the second half as Liverpool swept into the last 16 of Europe, although not as group winners following Porto's 2-0 victory over Beşiktaş. Still, one point and one goal from their first three Group A games, nine and 16 goals from their second: some comeback.

If Rafa Benitez's players deserve huge praise for relighting their European fire, the coach himself merits sustained applause for the way he kept everyone calm and organised. Benitez should now enjoy his imminent meeting with Liverpool's owners, although he might struggle to convince Tom Hicks and George Gillett that he requires many reinforcements in the January transfer window (barring the necessity of making permanent the loan deal for the exceptional Javier Mascherano). The astute Argentine and the rest of Benitez's players were terrific here.

Here was thrilling confirmation of the class that did exist in a side that faltered at Reading at the weekend. Here was a crystal-clear reminder of Benitez's ability to set up a team so brilliantly for a European examination. Everyone knew his job.

advertisementJamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia dominated Mamadou Niang in the air and on the ground. Mascherano anchored midfield, allowing Gerrard to raid forward. Harry Kewell, a model of endeavour all evening, and Yossi Benayoun protected their full-backs zealously as well as pushing on busily.

Kuyt and Torres dropped back to fight fires when Marseille had the ball, which was for two-thirds of a desperately one-sided affair. Torres was almost right-back at one point in the first half, embodying Liverpool's all-for-one spirit flowing. Benitez's men had known how daunting this place could be, how they would have to stick together to survive one of European football's most intimidating arenas. "England Is Our Kingdom" read one banner in the heaving mass of humanity that constitutes the north end of Stade Velodrome. Gerrard was having none of that. Marseille soon became an Englishman's kingdom.

Marseille's supporters also raised huge flags depicting the crests of Chelsea, Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Southampton, English visitors all vanquished here. The Liverpool of Benitez were determined not to go the way of Gerard Houllier's men and so resolve was stamped on every tackle and break.

Flares were also held aloft, the red sparks showering all and sundry. Fireworks were released by fans, leaving plumes of smoke hanging in the cold Provencal air. Missiles rained down on Pepe Reina whenever he ventured back to his goal-line. But however intimidating the Marseille fans tried to make the atmosphere, Liverpool kept going about their accomplished work.

They had walked into a storm all right, a blizzard of flares, missiles and abuse. But fear? No chance. Liverpool were so confident, so good that they eventually departed to a standing ovation by a French audience won over by their visitors' character and tactical class. Embarrassingly, expensively, Marseille had failed to heed the warning words of their captain, Lorik Cana. "Liverpool are strong as a team but they have two special players in Gerrard and Torres," Cana had observed. If only his colleagues had listened.

The man hailed by Cana as "the best midfielder in the world" was first to show, first to coax tears from French eyes. Gerrard earned the spot-kick with a driving run, eventually falling under Givet's challenge. It looked a slightly soft decision, but there was contact and Gerrard duly went down.

The Norwegian referee, Terje Hauge, flicked a finger towards the spot and Gerrard resumed his quest for goal. Marseille's keeper, Steve Mandanda, guessed Gerrard's intentions and managed to push out a centrally-placed kick, but Liverpool's No 8 was too quick to the rebound which he hooked gleefully into the net.

Marseille's supporters were enraged by the penalty, and threw plastic bottles at Gerrard. Their mood soon soured further when Kewell collected possession on the left and teased a fine pass through to Torres. These are the attacking situations the fast-moving Spaniard loves best: angling in from the left, able to work the ball on to his right foot for a clinical finish. El Nino sped past Cana and Rodriguez. As Givet dived in, Torres placed the ball emphatically past Mandanda.

Tucked away in one corner, Liverpool fans celebrated wildly, their joy intensified in the second period. Within three minutes, Kuyt had made it 3-0. Again Kewell played an important role, lifting the ball in to Kuyt, and the Dutchman rammed the ball past Mandanda.

Liverpool had not finished, Babel darting through in injury-time to round Mandanda and roll home a fourth. Liverpool walk on.
