Daily movie quiz
« on: October 11, 2017, 12:44:25 am »
A colleague has been sending out daily afternoon film trivia questions. I thought I'd share.

I'll provide the answers when I post the next round of questions.

Q1. Most recently on the big screen in 2017, what locale is being spied for the first time off the deck of the S.S. Venture?

Q2. What film is this?

Q3. Dracula is about to meet his maker, clad in a resplendent robe inspired by the work of what Austrian painter?

Q4. This Cantonese kung fu master has been portrayed over the past decade by four different actors in six varyingly loose biopics. Name any one of these four actors.

Q5. The Academy has assembled what three legendary directors (two of whom were nominees that year) as award presenters?

Q6. Weronika has just spotted her doppelganger boarding a tour bus in Krakow's Main Square. What is her counterpart's name?

Was busy putting down answers when I saw Dave's post, in which case I'll just say Thush is probably right on 1), and 3) is Gustav Klimt.

Eh, I don't really see an issue with spoilers here. It's not like this is a wide-ranging discussion thread - if you don't want to see the answers don't scroll down.

And the answers are:

1. Skull Island
2. Night of the Hunter
3. Gustav Klimt
4. Donnie Yen, Tony Leung, Dennis To, Anthony Wong
5. Billy Wilder, Akira Kurosawa and John Huston
6. The Double Life of Veronique

I got 3/6 plus only getting Kurosawa of the three directors.

Round 2 - And I think spoilering your answers is probably a good idea.

1. This fan mashup references what two movies, which share a very specific leporine trope?

2. Abraham Lincoln has just been shot—in one of the less controversial scenes of what Civil War epic?

3. Monkey ghosts appear to the relatives of what title character of a Palme d'or winner?

4. This fictional Hollywood studio is featured in two films made twenty-five years apart by the same auteurs. Name either film

5. What ominous 1875 tune is being whistled in this 1930s scene?

6. This is the cast of the improbable 1980s sequel to what 1970s hit?

It's a pretty easy round. I only missed the one.

And the answers are:

1. Donnie Darko/Harvey - Well done Hazell & Thush
2. Birth of a Nation - You got it, Thush
3. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives - Titi + Classycarra
4. Barton Fink/Hail Caesar - Titi + Thush
5. In the Hall of the Mountain King - Dave
6. Lots of you said "Stayin Alive", but the question asked what movie the picture was a sequel to - which is Saturday Night Fever - all of which you would have got anyway.

Anyway, next round.

1. What auteur is directing himself as the title character(s) in a 1953 film?

2. These protagonists' ordeals give us two terms for psychological manipulation. Name either term.

3. Whom does this sinister parental figure hope to add to her wall of victims?

4. Careful! The climax to what silent comedy is advertised in this poster?

5. What character should have stuck to the big screen instead of moonlighting in a cataclysmic Atari tie-in?

6. What titan of independent filmmaking is sporting a Hugh Hefner look in this publicity still?

Kudos to you if you manage to get #4 - but the other ones are gettable. 1 & 6 are definitely guessable if you have some reasonable knowledge of directors of a certain type. Independent isn't necessarily the first word that comes to mind.

Okie dokey, sports fans.

1. Ed Wood
2. Gaslighting/Catfishing
3. Coraline
4. Safety Last
5. ET
6. Roger Corman

I actually thought 6 was Ed Wood. And I'd never heard of Safety Last. Shame on me.

Next round:

1. Who is delivering an Oscar-winning performance in this production still?

2. Give the common title of these films, both monumental feats of production design and visual effects in their day?

3. These animated sequences, featured in a 2015 feature film, were inspired by what 1920s book of poetry?

4. Lon Chaney's character from the lost silent film London After Midnight, pictured here, inspired the look of what recent horror antagonist (and inadvertent LGBT icon)?

5. What 1980s gathering is represented by this minimalist layout?

6. This is a poster for what 1970s thriller?

Bloody Hell, used to love Harold Lloyd as a kid.  "A pair of glasses and a smile"!!! :)

BBC2 used to re-run them sometime during the mid 80's.  Every weekday night about 6pm they alternated between Harold Lloyd, Flash Gordon and Laurel & Hardy.
