Well so far I've been proved right since his injury and can't see him playing for another club unless he takes next to nothing wages.

A prime example of somebody whose interest is purely in the lifestyle of a footballer rather than actually playing football.

I remember when one of the mid to upper tier Spanish teams were interested in him and he leaked that they couldn't offer him what Liverpool were paying him so he was happy to stay put. He almost seemed apologetic about it.

Amazing that somebody who has earned as much money as he has throughout his career wouldn't consider taking a paycut (and still earning a fantastic amount of money) in order to play football regularly.

It might just be that he knew his body was absolutely fucked and he'd get found out if he went to play for somewhere else where he had to actually get on the pitch. Staying on 60k a week or whatever for a year would then be logically better than moving somewhere to get 20k and get let go when they cotton on to his fitness problems.

Not that I advocate this behaviour, just seems pragmatic from his point of view.

Would you have said the same about rob Jones when injuries stopped him playing? And if you where in that position would you just forsake your last paychecks in all you've known throughout your career.

When I hit post I knew there would be the old "the club gave him the contract, he's perfectly entitled to sit and see it out" argument.

If I was a multi-millionaire sitting on my arse and I had the chance to go and do something I loved for half the money, I would go and do it regardless.

Rob Jones was not in that position so it's not a parallel case.

Enriqué hasn't got another club yet. You think that's a coincidence..?  There's a reason why I mentioned Jones.  I'll throw another name in there, ledley king.

Ex-Liverpool defender Enrique finds new club

BY CHRIS BEESLEY

Former Reds defender joins Real Zaragoza

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has joined Spanish Second Division side Real Zaragoza on a two-year deal.

The 30-year-old left-back was a much-heralded signing when he first arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United for £7million in 2011.

However, after two years as a first team regular he dramatically fell down the pecking order in the first team squad, playing just 12 Premier League games over his final three seasons at the club and none at all in his last campaign.

Signed by Kenny Dalglish, Enrique retained his spot as Brendan Rodgers' first choice left-back in the Ulsterman's debut season at Anfield and he turned out 78 times for the Reds between 2011-13 but he lost his place to youngster Jon Flanagan and on-loan Aly Cissokho in the 2013/14 campaign as the club came agonisingly close to winning a first Premier League title.

The arrival of his compatriot Alberto Moreno the following summer further hampered his chances and he was released by Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.

In total, Valencia-born Enrique, dubbed 'El Toro' (The Bull) in his homeland for his physical play, made 99 appearances for Liverpool and scored twice.

Given the length of his injury spell, I'm not surprised about this, even though he's still 30. No club in the PL was going to touch him. I doubt most in the Championship would have offered him more than a one year deal if that. Good luck to him though.

I think people are a touch harsh with Enrique. Yeah, he lounged around for the last couple of years he was here but what choice did he have? He had a bad knee injury and was told in no uncertain terms he wasn't wanted and to find a new club. He was on what, 60k a week? With a bad knee injury like that he probably knew that he'd never get as much money as that from another club. He was probably thinking of life after football (even though he's only 30).

He was happy to pick up his 60k a week and be able to live comfortably because he was aware that he had a dodgy knee and hadn't played much football. I can't imagine he's on more than a few grand a week at his new club and I can't see him playing deep into his 30's. He's got enough money to last a lifetime now. He always gave his all I thought; he wasn't always switched on and he's not the best left back I've ever seen but he was a decent player when he was fit and had a nice rapport with Suarez for a while.

I wish him well.

I always liked him.

When you think of the crap we've had at left back over the years, jose was never down there at the bottom of the barrel.

Even when hes not playing, he didnt whine. Probably knew his playing days are over after the injury so anything else is a bonus.

Hope some chinese club comes in and pays for his retirement

Hold on...was his knee injury the reason he wasn't playing?  Because if it was that bad that he couldn't get a game due to the injury then surely he wouldn't be able to get a game anywhere

Well that's bollocks. I know it is for a fact (I said so on here he was injured before anyone else and also said he was barely going to play again) and also he's just had to retire early at 31 because of his knee

The lad wanted to play football but couldn't. Feel gutted for him the way it went at the end and don't blame him for doing everything he could to play but not being able to.  The lad signed a contract and was in his right to earn the money.

Yep, just read it in the news.

Feel really sorry for the fella and maybe some might view his time at Liverpool in a different light now.

Personally, and especially when he first came here, I liked him.  Wasn't world class or anything, but had plenty to offer and was decent.

It seems like he's been through hell with his knee and retiring at 31 is no easy decision for him I'd imagine.

Jose Enrique on his secret Liverpool agony – and why he'll always be grateful to Jurgen Klopp

Former Anfield left-back forced to retire at the age of 31

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jose-enrique-secret-liverpool-agony-13579274

Jose Enrique has revealed the agony that plagued his final years at Liverpool after announcing his retirement from football aged 31.

But the Spaniard has thanked Jurgen Klopp for the “honour” of being made Reds captain on his last-ever start for the club.

Enrique, who has been without a club since being released by Real Zaragoza in the summer, has chosen to hang up his boots having been hampered by a long-standing knee injury.

The Spaniard struggled with the problem during the final years of his Anfield career, making only 21 appearances in his last three seasons at the club.

And Enrique has revealed to what extent the injury affected not only his fitness, but also his mental state.

“Something that was supposed to be for three months ended up turning into two years,” he said. “I saw five doctors in England, but they did not get the problem.

“I'm still not quite right, either physically or mentally, but I feel like starting from scratch.

“I could not play without medication, I did not even train. It was hard, desperate, sometimes I got dizzy in training on so much medication.

“After every game or effort, my knee swelled like a ball and I was barely able to walk for three days.

“It hurt me, but of so many times that they told me it was a psychological problem I came to believe it.”

As a consequence, Enrique went without treatment for a week ahead of the home game against Crystal Palace in November.

“I ended up only training on the Friday and I went 15 minutes without medication and I could only go in a straight line, I could not turn,” said Enrique, who featured for the full match but ended up playing only a further 29 minutes that season.

Enrique then travelled to Spain for an operation, but admitted: “I was never the same, it was frustrating. I was three months playing with a damaged meniscus. I had to escape to Spain, because I could not even walk.

“I could not compete and I had a terrible time. It affected me a lot because I wanted to play and could not.

“I had an anxiety attack thinking 'what the hell is wrong with me?' I did not understand it.”

Speaking to Spanish news outlet Marca, Enrique admitted his final year at Liverpool under Klopp was “horrible”, although the painful memory was eased slightly by being named captain for his final starts for the Reds in the FA Cup ties against Exeter City.

“The worst moments of my life were under Klopp because, being well, I knew I could play some games, but he was sincere with me,” said the Spaniard, who made 99 appearances and scored twice for the Reds.

“Klopp let me be captain of Liverpool in my farewell, an honor for which I will always be grateful.”

Explaining his decision to retire, Enrique said: “I want to be an older man who can walk, not an invalid.”

Seems like the knee injury was much worse than most assumed. Just bad luck and a real shame it prematurely ended his career.
Nevertheless, thanks for your time here and all the best for the future José.  :scarf

Sad news.

His last 18 months for the club, he wasn't much use - mainly down to injuries.

But he was a very good left back for us prior to that.  Especially defensively.  One vs one, I can't remember him getting beaten too often.

He used to get a fair few assists for Suarez as well.  Like that superb goal vs Newcastle.

Shame his career was so blighted. Good luck to him. I hear he's a bit to short of grey matter to commentate, or pundit in Spain, so maybe he has a future on Sky?

Carra and co making embarrassments of themselves on twitter about it too. Basically saying he stole a living at Liverpool etc even though Enrique just retired at the age of 31 having barely played for about 3-4 seasons, which were likely to be the best years of his career. I think that's incredibly unreasonable, to say the least.

When I saw him at the start, I thought we had our LB for the next 10 years.  Just goes to show - you never can tell.  Another player whose career was blighted by injury.  I knew there had to be something wrong when he wasn't getting anywhere near the first team.

According to himself he couldn't play football regularly. If what he says is accurate, he would have failed the medical anyway.

I think Carra said years back he felt like he had to coach this lad through every game and he wouldnt listen anyway and would just bomb off up the pitch like a headless chicken

first 6 months under Dalglish he was quality, tailed off the last half of the season then i think Rodgers publicly criticized him around october 2012? from then until the end of that season he was as good as ever. following season his knee blew up and that was pretty much game over from then on.

i see carragher and james pearce are blocked by him on twitter, maybe he got fed up of being slagged off

First six months he was probably the best left back in the league (seriously, granted the LB position was short in quality at the time in the PL). Fast, strong, good passer. The only winger I can remember getting the better of him was Valencia, who had a good year that year.

Good luck to him. Wouldn't be surprised if he moved back to Liverpool, he seemed to love it.

Gutted for the lad, sounds like a horrid injury, I've had two injuries myself in the knee and wouldn't wish them on anyone, amateur sportsman or pro, knee injuries are fucking horrid!

All the best, Jose! He had some solid games for us and always seemed like a happy guy who was proud to be at LFC! YNWA!
