I loved how he lost that first header after being outmuscled by McBurnie or the other lad, can't remember which one it was, and when the ball was up for winning again soon after, he absolutely flew in and won the header about as cleanly as possible and left the striker in a heap. And he then repeated that another 10 times throughout the game. He's easily the best LFC defender I have watched and he's better than anyone else I've watched in the premier league as well. He should win the Balon D'or.

I think we are just at the stage where this level of performance is the norm for him and what we come to expect. Which is still absolutely astonishing.

And why when he makes even the most minor mistake, it gets blown up to silly levels.

As good as the other lads are in our team, he is far out on his own IMO, in terms of how good he is at his position and his influence on others. The consistency is like nothing I’ve seen anyone produce in an LFC shirt. Not Gerard, not Suarez.

Two seasons ago I broke out in a sweat every time the opposition had a corner. Now I get frustrated when we don't go straight onto the counter attack after the VVD inspired defence have easily dealt with the corner.

Wasn't a corner, it was a deep free-kick. Lovren had just come on to sure things up and dropped about three yards deeper than the rest of the team, playing Rondon onside.

Can't remember their other goal though - that might have been?

That's when you know we really do have the best centre back in world football.

Victim of his own success as others have said.  His standards are so damn high that now when a player gets past him/ sends him the wrong way etc etc its headline news.

I'd much rather that than copious amounts of mistakes regularly made and no one bats an eye lid cause its the norm.

I'm not blaming Gomez by the way, remember last season pre injury when with Van Dijk and Gomez we conceded something like 6 in the first dozen or so games. People thought we'd struggle without him.

It's like how every game that Messi doesn't score he was poor. When you don't give people much to criticize you about, they'll latch to every sub-par performance or single mistake.

VVD will those moments in the future, but it doesn't change the fact that he is still the best in the world.

haha yeah, his bad games are the equivalent of most players having a stormer aint they really.  Love listening him too when talking about football, always simplifies things. He said things like were human and lets not forget the start we have made this season because of one disorganised night and he's right.
He appears to me to be exactly the same off the pitch as he is on it.  I like that. He doesn't play football trying to be a different character than he really is.
