My friend is out there alone.. In Istanbul, her flights been cancelled and ordered to stay indoors. Apparently gunshots in Istanbul airport :/ not a good situation for her to be in, very worrying.

This won't be bloodless, no coup is. The president was democratically elected. Turkey is also a massive country so it'll take a long time for the confusion to die down. I doubt the entire army are in on it.

There's been coups in Turkey in 1960, 1971, 1980 and 1997. It's nothing new.
Just talking about the whole world in general. So much killing and corruption, certainly didnt feel like it was this bad a few years ago.

Erdogans call to the streets gonna lead to bloodshed tonight..looks like it's started
Out of interest does anyone know how the Istanbul footy teams Ultras line up..does one team support Erdogans government more than the other..they gonna get involved?

Beşiktaş are anarchist and socialist. See themselves similar to St Pauli. Lads I know hate Erdogan but want him removed democratically, so they hate both sides.

I remember when I was a kid in the mid 80s and loads of horrible things were going on all over the world. In Israel, Britain, Corsica and various other places. Not even taking into account that there were still politicians on both sides of the iron curtain with their finger over the button to nuclear destruction. Events like tonight or yesterday in Nice are horrible, but they are nothing new or a sign that the world will end tomorrow...

So, the military has taken over your country, your position is under threat. What do you do? Tell unarmed civilians to go to the streets despite a curfew and martial law being in place. That's clearly the right thing to do...
It is. Ignoring the rights and wrongs in this particular case, coups can be defeated only if the army is divided, or there's an immediate popular protest against it causing the army to back down.

If there was a coup in the UK, wouldn't you protest?

Soldiers are people. They'll generally follow orders to take control of a government building - but think twice before opening fire on crowds of people (and may even switch sides).

Tanks have now opened fire around the Turkish parliament.
Some indication that the people who carried out the coup are citing human right abuses and violation of Turkish law by Erdogan as reasons for the coup.

Depends on the people in charge of the country. Would I protest for someone like Erdogan? Someone who is putting people he doesn't like in jail? Someone who's suppressing the media? Someone who seems to be in it to line his own and his family's pockets? Someone who doesn't give a fuck about the people? Someone who's suppressing minorities? Definitely not...

Suggestions that this might only be a small section of the military - the announced curfew is clearly being ignored in both Istanbul and Ankara, with very little military effort to stop that.

They are always going to cite stuff like that as the reasons though

It doesn't mean what will follow will be any better (not that you're saying it will)

He was elected so presumably does retain a lot of support and it will be his supporters protesting. Would you protest for a government you supported? That's the comparison, not your view of that particular government.

President of Turkey reported to be flying to London to seek asylum. Good job our Foreign Secretary is an experienced statesman, and not a complete newcomer whose last communication with the Turkish President was to write a poem about him having sex with a goat.

He should and rightfully so. You should not forget Gulen and Tayyip was on each other's lap corrupting the country for first 12 years of AKP

Don't worry man, they should be safe but they should avoid public places, squares, boulevards. Those who are on streets and jumping on tanks are AKP supporters who hate foreigners, liberals, secular people.

It's been over an hour here and ezan sounds from mosques simultaneously, then asking people to go outside for Quran and Allah.
Likely bid to get AKP supporters on streets (just the way Erdogan asked to). In Islam, if you hear ezan in unusual time (prayer calls from mosques) it means call for jihad.
