Brother due to fly home from Turkey late tonight (not from Istanbul thankfully)

Hopefully he got out before the airports were closed, which they now seem to be.

As bad as Erdogan is, he still has a lot of support in Turkey. Hoping this doesn't turn ugly.

Military's statement is being read on TRT. "Council of Peace in the Country" they name themselves.

Sad state of affairs when our first thought is to welcome a military coup.
It feels strange, but so long as there's no chaos I can't see this as a bad thing.  Hate Erdogan.

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson's first day in the job and he pulls this off, what a legend.

Reports in he's legged it in a private jet.

Looks like the army won.

Perhaps so, but who will heads of state recognize, will the continue talking with Mr. Erdogan or will they open up channels of dialogue with the Army.

THis is how we will know who really has won.

Been a long time coming as I thought part of the duty of the military was to maintain Attaturks vision of a secular Turkey. It'll be interesting to see how the turkish population react as a lot of economic prosperity has come about in the last 10 years under Erdogans watch so I can see the country being split over this.

The world just seems to be slowly being destabilized bit by bit.

Erdogan is a c*nt but there is no doubt he is heavily supported by many Turks. While I have wanted to see him out for a while now, it would have always been democratically. A coup will only lead to more chaos as half of the country rebels against the army's decision and the other minority groups start to take advantage of the situation. If this is indeed what everyone is saying, I don't think the future is very bright for Turkey, which is a huge shame. One of my favourite countries to visit.

Apparently Erdogan is on holiday so that's the timing for the coup.

We have some Turkish RAWKers don't we? hope some of them fill us in. I've only heard of how batshit Erdogan is. Would love some input from them

They'll probably wait to see how it all plays out but well you know the saying, might makes right and the military has all of it. It probably serves western interests for Turkey to be secular anyway.

Half the country voted for his party late last year, so I seriously doubt that he lacks backers. As far as I know, most of his support is in the rather rural areas and not in the big cities. It's kind of baffling how his party got that many votes after all the shite Erdogan's done in recent years...

Have some Turkish friends I met night before final in 2005. Beşiktaş supporters so have been over to visit them when we played there twice.

They don't know what the fuck is going on. Locked themselves in their houses. They live in Beşiktaş so pretty central, said they have seen tanks going past.

They hate Erdogan, but don't want this.

They can't get on Facebook or Twitter, been in touch with them on WhatsApp.

Reports a helicopter fired on anti coup protesters, so not bloodless. There was also video of the sounds of a firefight and a large explosion has been heard.

The coup is being attributed to Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic cleric in exile in the US.

Anybody know anything about him? He's apparently conservative, but advocates democracy (???) and religious tolerance. So, I'm presuming he's not going to be an Ayatollah Khomeini/Iran type?

So, the military has taken over your country, your position is under threat. What do you do? Tell unarmed civilians to go to the streets despite a curfew and martial law being in place. That's clearly the right thing to do...

There's been coups in Turkey in 1960, 1971, 1980 and 1997. It's nothing new.
