I respect any young lad trying to do it before it becomes a habit. Nip it in the bud because I don't know a smoker that wouldn't quit if they had the willpower to. It's been over a year now for me and I always say "if I can do it, anyone can".

I was in my 20s. Big time. Couldn't stop myself. It was almost an instinct. I'd sometimes wake up in the night and have one out the window! Pathetic really. And as hypocritical as it is, it really angers me when I see lads who can't be any older than 13 or 14 smoking.

I see. For me it's weird where i have this curiosity to see what it feels like but don't want to try it in case it messes me up.
(and i'm still talking about smoking here  :P)

Dont do it to yourself mate. Smoking is of no benefit to you.

I smoked for 7 years, from the age of 14 up until 21. At first (like alot of people I imagine) I started for the 'image'. I thought it was cool to be a smoker. I kept telling myself that I would never get addicted. I would start smoking at parties only, then I would also have a smoke after school, then before I knew it, it had become a full blown pack-a-day addiction.

Pure will-power. Simple as that. If you want to, you can. I started off going to the gym regularly and I did chew a lot as well but after the first few months or breaking the pattern of having one before you set off in the morning, one with your breakfast, you start to realise you never needed them like you thought.

That would be only advice - keep yourself occupied.

It's now at a point when I'll swerve somebody smoking in front of me in the street because I don't like the smell.

Ive been off em for three weeks now. I used patches for a day, but they made my arm hurt and they upset my stomach so I threw them out. Its alot easier than i thought it was going to be. The smell of smoke disgusts me now which I think is the best sign that I am over them.

I find the hardest part is not the nicotine addiction, its the habit of lighting up and smoking a ciggarette. There were so many activities throughout the day that I unwillingly associated with having a ciggie.

Such as:

Getting up in the morning, having a cup of coffee and a ciggie
Having a ciggie straight after a meal
Sitting in the car in traffic, lighting up a ciggie.

Thats the hardest part I think. But I have made the decision to not smoke anymore and my life is already so much better.

agreed.

whenever i've tried quitting the only hard parts were the 'ritual cigarettes' - the one with your coffee, the one after a meal, during a good shite, after sex etc. [which leads me to believe that it's only a psychological thing, which it is, but that's a different story]

the hardest one to give up is the after meal one IMO. i feel like i'm going to vomit if i don't have a fag after a large meal.

i haven't quit to this day, because right now i don't really feel the need to. i don't smoke a lot, as little as 2-3 a day when i'm in the flat all day, to 10-15 on a night out. generally a pack of 20 lasts 3 days, and i think that's not too much. moderate.

i'm sure the day will come when i'll quit 100% but not yet.

Im on Champix as well, been nearly 3 months for me since I smoked, infact now the smell of it and the thought of it makes me feel sick as fuck.

Stopped taking champix ages ago, i think not long after that post to be honest, was making me feel sick as fuck. Still havent had or wanted a ciggy though, I wont again me, finally seen how pointless it all is. I read a bit of that Alan Carrs book as well, The easy way to quit smoking and if you can read it, or watch the dvd of it, it helps a hell of a lot. I know people who stopped on their own just by reading his book. It puts it all in perspective and sorts your head out. Try it, I reccomend that and Champix, thats what done it for me.

Its been 16 days since my last fag and I'm not really missing it at all. I've just gone cold turkey, no patches or shit like that. Like alot of people have said it is hard when you're doing something that you'd associate with having a fag.

I know tell me bout it! (wait Baggies does mean what I think right?!)  ;)

I thought I was gonna stop new years (though I have cut right down to just a nightcap...hope to phase that out..eventually!)  and so just went for it, smoked a whole B of pollen and then some, and that doesn't even include some of the punk I bought!

My excuse is my birthday, Christmas and New Years are all in December...Weak excuse I know, but I have to justify that absolute madness somehow ;D.
Feel a lot better cutting right down to just a night cap though, was in a complete state of what I would call 'limbo' last month and must of killed a tragic amount of brain cells, only prob is a 10 box is seemingly not enough at present, but smoking the cigs will die down I think, sometimes I smoke one and feel really sick. Hardly EVER used to smoke cigs, maybe the odd chip, was mainly just zoots before!

Anyway, gonna finish my nightcap ;D and retreat to my pit.
If you really want to do something, you will find a way. If you don't, you will find an excuse.

Have been reducing all week and planning to comletely go off them this weekend. Will probably go on the patches. As everyone says it's hard when you associate doing something with somking I'm in the unfortunate position that I'll be working when I get home and then probably have a few games on the x box. No real opportunity to break my routine up.

I've always exercised regularly enough but have found it increasingly difficult so might up the effort on that front. I'm going to be like an anti christ for a while me thinks.

i used to always light a fag after a game of fifa, smoking it as i start another game then have another one once that game is finished, usually quite long games though on fifa 08, the be a pro 5 v 5 stuff with a few mates but that's probably when i smoked most, completely off them now and not missing them at all.

good luck to everybody, hopefully you don't find it difficult!

Same as myself. I'm going to have to ignore the x box for a bit as I love (d) nothing more than a few cans of Tuborg a few smokes and a bit of Evo of Prize Fighter. The worst part of it all is that I just bought Gears of war 2... NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I stopped on 1st July 2007 when they banned it in pubs. Found it dead easy to start with have had one blip aftera row with the missus apart from that cold turkey, no patches.

It was dead easy in the first instance, I had told people for at least 2 months previous that I was going to stop and I think that helped as I would've got some serious stick from the lads.

My problem is that I was already quite a big guy and have put extra weight on through rewarding myself with sweets, biscuits cakes etc. now I am going on a diet to lose weight, I have given up smoking, will have to cut down on drinking and now the bastards have banned us from using the internet at work, thank fuck I have RAWK and Liverpool FC!

Good luck to all recent quitters!

Been a month now since I've had a fag. Still not even been tempted to have a cheeky one. Was out drinking with a few mates last week and one of them smokes, I went outside with him while he smoked to test my resolve and still didn't have one.

Anyone else have dreams of smoking though? Its really weird. My mate who used to smoke when he found out I was quiting a few weeks ago asked me if I'd started dreaming of smoking yet. Now I know what he means, every few days I have a dream that I'm smoking and I wake up thinking, shit, I've had a fag, before I realise it was just a dream. ;D

I fucked up my lung 3 years ago and went through 6 months of medication to mend it. The good thing about that is that I quit instantly without looking back and IMO it's the only way to quit. My brother tried to quit slowly by reducing the quantity each day but that never work.

The (not necessarily) bad thing about quitting is that I became extra sensitive to the smell and smoke. Couldn't stay an hour in a crowded club/pub no more.

had 2 puffs yesterday with my mate, he just got out of prison and i just felt like having a few puffs with him, dunno why. didn't make me want a fag or anything so it's just a puff here and there with no consequences with getting hooked again, but i guess that's how it starts so i'll nip it in the bud from now on.

I can't have a pint without one.  If I don't, then I'm fine.  Although a couple of nights a week, I wanna smoke before I go to bed, just to get outside while it's night by myself for a few minutes and think.  Go through a pack about every 2 weeks?  Was a pack per day for a few years when I was around 20-22.

Over 10 weeks for me now and still haven't touched one. Every now and then I get a serious urge to go out and buy some but then it passes and 98% of the time I don't even think about it.
