I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

And another one goes early.  82 world cup was first one I really remembered and got into as an 11 year old.  That Brazil team with Zico Falcao, etc, were a joy to watch and Socrates was the conductor of the orchestra.  Brilliant player.  Think for some bizarre reason he also played for some non league team over here a few  years back up in the north east.

One of my earliest memories of football is of that mesmerising 1982 team. He was pretty extraordinary off the pitch as a man too. What a shame.

Me and you must be if the same age Stussy because that Spain 82 tournament was fantastic.

The Brazil v Italy QF was epic and Socrates got on the scoresheet.

Socrates as a magnificent footballer, academic and liquor drinking chain smoker didn't conform to most people's perceptions of a footballer. This just added to the mans appeal.

With Smokin Joe Fraser and Socrates we have lost 2 great sporting legends over the last few months.

Used to run round the garden with a ball when I was knee high to a grasshopper shouting 'Socrates goooooooooooool'. First football I can remember was that 82 world cup - dad got a colour tv just to watch it.

Watching the footage of him playing, he's the heartbeat of that Brazil team of the early to mid 80s. Just so graceful on the ball, keeping play ticking over by bringing the ball out of defence and then breaking past the strikers when something is on. Superb player. Makes the game look so easy.

Rest in peace Socrates.
