Don't they believe it's us causing the damage though? I am sure there are some out there that are purely in it for the money and don't care what harm it causes. Your Trump types. But some are more like , say the Jehovas witness types that would prevent a blood transfusion as it will stop them going to heaven (*). They genuinely believe they are preventing us doing harm.
(* might well be taking the stereotype belief here, but you get the idea)
I suppose what I am saying when I state that 'they do not care about the damage they cause' is that it does not even occur to them; fixated, as they are, upon their own egos being stroked through being acknowledged, 'followed', 'liked', and generally cheered on by more minor contrarians. These are deeply disturbed individuals who do not give a shit about the effects of the nonsense they spread has upon others.
'Contrarianism' is not necessarily a bad thing. It could mean a willingness to reassess a complex issue by going back to basic premises to see if the received wisdom adds up or if there is an alternative perspective which (better) fits the facts; a willingness to give a complex issue a fresh, honest look. Or -
as it more usually goes - it is about cherry-picking facts (and/or misrepresenting them) in order to make yourself stand out from the crowd and appear insightful and important. These 'contrarians' who question everything for their own peculiar ends, but possess neither the stamina nor the intellect to properly embrace the subject at hand, are dishonest and dangerous. I have a deep loathing for them. Their followers are usually more deserving of some sympathy. They are not usually indifferent to harm caused to others. They are more usually just mislead and more easily lead, I guess.
