Tremendous news

I know people hate the idea of spending money on contracts 'instead of' new signings, but this summer so far we've tied down the best CB in the world, the best GK in the world, the best RB in the world, the best DM in the world and one of the best 18 year olds in the world to new contracts. That's absolutely massive. If we can get Mo sorted this summer and hopefully Hendo then I'd honestly be fine with signing no-one else.

Yep. That's all we heard about for years when we did't have it, lack of a spine of a team. There's no better 3 than that in world football at the minute. For me theres no one in football better to watch than a centre half like Van Dijk who no matter what style of strikers he's up against he's superior. Nippy fast striker, skillful, poacher, physical. Add in he's a massive talker, organiser and goal threat and you have the best. Great news

Surely we need to be doing both things though.

In the short term it is fine just to tie down your best players to long term deals. However, not freshening up the squad and lowering the average age is likely to come back and bite us at some stage.

Delighted we have tied down Virgil to a long term deal but for me we need to continue recruiting players in their early to mid twenties.

I did wonder if the reason this was leaked early in the day (as they’ve previously been at 5pm) is because another one will be getting announced later, the club seem to make sure that each player has a bit of times to enjoy the limelight of the new deal so I wonder if that maybe the case today.
