How do you go about uploading things to that site? I have a smaller but better (IMHO) copy of the Forest game and several others that I could upload.

I miss playing Forest, used to enjoy a few beers in the TBI then a fight round the back of the cricket ground.

There's a reasonable chance (at least 1 in 4) that they'll be back up next season. Will you be able to get back from the States?

'Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang' Was about Gary Gillespie.

Straight Outta Compton was originally gonna be a documentary concept album about the lineage from Dennis Compton to Ian Botham to Andy Goran (Ivanisovich) amongst cricketing/footballing sportsmen.

Everyone remembers barnes back heel assist for the second goal, but his disguised sideways pass to split the Everton defence for macmahon to run onto for the second was awesome.

Also, the goal celebration for that goal was hilarious - Aldridge and Macmahon do a sort 'chest rubbing' tribal dance

Aldo's face is hilarious when they do that he does this clench fist thing too don't he  ;D

The movement of the team was brilliant.
Every player seemed to have so much time
with the ball and it was down to their ball
skills. No need to hoof the ball from the back.

Just watching the game now one thing I noticed, just before the Gillespe goal, when Beardsley has the shot notice how many reds have packed in the box.... I counted at least 5 !! When was the last time you saw 5 reds inside the box calling for the ball?

OK, help me out, anyone who was there. The cameras failed to catch the full glory of one of the goals (I think maybe it was the Gary Gillespie one). I have a memory of Barnes doing yet another terrific piece of skill in the left hand corner just before the cross was delivered, yet the camera cuts in too late to catch it. The moment was therefore lost forever. But what exactly happened? Another nutmeg, a Cruyff turn, a roulette? What was it Kopites?

I have the 87/88 season review called "The Mighty Reds" on DVD that I could get up. I've got a lot of games that would be good to get up on there. 7-0 against Spurs, 9-0 against Palace. Will have to be reminded how you do it.

The Spurs game is worth it just for terry macs goal alone.

He nutmegged Steve Chettle I think - then skipped along the byline before pulling back - possibly for Gillespie's goal, possibly for Beardlsey's.

That one was fully caught by the cameras I think. I was wondering about Gillespie's goal. There was an astonishing piece of skill by John in the same corner, but the vision mixer missed it.

It was straight from a corner. I've written about it before on here but time has hazed the memory. I'll have to wait till I've finished downloading this video to refresh the picture in my head but this is how I remember it ...

Chettle had just made yet another save. We were absolutely storming his goal. They were just breathing a sigh of relief at only conceding a corner. He was in awe of us and there were several wry shakes of the head accompanied by smiles that said "this is just ridiculous". He was a great sport that night. So he did some more heroics to keep out Beardsley I think. Then we took the corner (Kop end, from the right of the goal looking from the Kop). What happened next left everyone around me and beyond absolutely bewildered. There were about 4 or 5 touches - simple, fast, one-touch - ending with Gillespie slotting it away.

I remember so clearly that we were all looking at each other going "What the fuck happened there?" It was just so quick and incisive. It was appropriate that we later found out that it had been too quick even for the cameraman. It was awesome. That moment of everyone going "What the hell happened?" is far and away the strongest memory of that night.

Not much help to you Yorky but I just had to mention this incomplete memory because it's probably the second most vivid memory of all my Liverpool watching days (the number one was the noise when we equalised in the 1986 Cup Final).

Great summary Callaghan but it was Sutton in goal! Made plenty of good saves as well. I remember Beardsley getting a 10 in the Match player ratings the following week and that NEVER happened.

I got the keeper's name wrong when I wrote about this ages ago too! I only wrote Chettle cos somebody did above.  D'oh!

Yeah, it was Sutton I was on about. He performed heroics, we hit the post and the crossbar a few times .... and we still won 5-nil. Incredible - and Sutton had it written all over his face a few times.

Beardsley should've got 11!

I've got goosebumps just thinking about that night. I'm so proud to have been there. I'll dig out my old post FWIW when I get the time.

The bit I tend to leave out about the night when I tell people about is ... I'd had a few too many beers in The Park before the game!!

At least you remember something awesome happening before the cameras picked it up - something very quick and beautiful too. I thought Johnny Barnes was at the heart of it again. At any rate it was such a disappointment when I first saw the tv footage. I definitely remember thinking "they fucking missed it!"

What a night though. I've written about this before, but do you remember the sustained applause on the Kop after the glorious move that ended with Beardsley's rasper nearly breaking bar in two? It seemed to go on for ever. More like a standing ovation given to a brilliant play at the curtain call rather than a football match.

We all loved Tom Finney afterwards didn't we? The absolute master - and Shanks's favourite - saying it was the greatest performance he'd ever seen. He was enthusing like a kid. Wonderful.

In another video, i think its the full 87/88 season review, Aldridge was asked about the training, and said along the lines "Kenny just tells us we are the best and we can beat everyone. It was mostly 5-a-side".

Felling the Forest - Liverpool scuttle Nottingham in 1988
Wed 28 Mar 2007

While Liverpool were busy collecting  trophies across the continent throughout the 1980s, Nottingham Forest often garnered the plaudits of fans and experts who admired their cultured, passing style.

So when Kenny Dalglish's side met Forest for the third time in 11 days in April 1988, they took the opportunity to prove there was only one team worthy of the neutrals' admiring glances.

They were already well on the way to winning the championship with John Barnes, Peter Beardsley and John Aldridge proving an unstoppable combination.

That trio were at heart of one of the best performances seen in England since the war as Liverpool handed Forest a five-goal drubbing in front of an ecstatic Kop.

Forest's captain at the time was Stuart Pearce and the defender admitted he harboured a real grudge against Liverpool for a while.

He said: "For a couple of years I had a passionate dislike of Liverpool. I'm not going to apologise for it but if I'm being truely honest it was probably jealousy on my part because we couldn't beat them.

"There was only Liverpool who were better than us at that time and it was a fine line. I'm the kind of guy who wants to win at all costs, so it hurts to say that."

No wonder he disliked the Kop club so much. Liverpool beat Forest in two successive FA Cup semi-finals in the late-1980s and lost only three of 22 meetings between the clubs throughout the decade.

Forest's record at Liverpool in particular made unpleasant reading for City Ground boss Brian Clough.

His side failed to win on any of their 10 visits to Anfield in the 1980s, losing on nine occasions, and must have been sick of the sight of the club's famous "This is Anfield" sign that greets the players as they walk down the tunnel onto the pitch.

Even so, Liverpool reached new heights that evening. Ray Houghton started the rout, Aldridge grabbed two typical poacher's efforts, Beardsley added another and, to add insult to injury, Scottish defender Gary Gillespie grabbed a rare goal to make it five.

Liverpool's exuberant brand of passing football had already drawn praise from the great French midfielder Michel Platini earlier in the season.

After the demolition of Forest, it was the turn of Tom Finney, one of England's finest wingers, to extol the virtues of Dalglish's side.

"That was one of the finest displays of football played at pace I've ever seen," Finney said.

Forest, not for the first time, could count themselves unlucky to have met Liverpool on a night when no team in the country could have got near them.

I've amended my posts slightly from the original A Game or Goal you missed you wish you hadn't thread...

There's a goal that hundreds, if not thousands, at least partly missed in 1988 - even though we were all at the game!

The 3rd goal in that amazing 5-0 against Forest. Beardsley had just worked some magic leaving the keeper breathtaken not believing what was happening. That's the thing about that game, it was 5-0 but it could have been 20-0. Beardsley hit the post I think and then a relieved defender deliberately put the ball out for a corner on the right as you look out from the Kop. I, as always, was left of the goal.

Forest were just totally relieved to have stopped us scoring, but we took the corner and three of the quickest, most incisive passes found Beardsley Gillespie who smashed the ball home, leaving the keeper, (Crossley?) Sutton, shaking his head in awe and admiration. We'd just had two close games against Forest: they beat us 2-1 at the City Ground on 2nd April, we beat them 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough on 9th April (having drawn 3-3 with Man Utd on the 4th April) and then they finally came to Anfield on the 13th April. There was a real sense before the game that "OK, we've had two good games but This Is Anfield!).

The thing was, though, that the build up to the Gillespie goal was so quick that everyone standing on the Kop, certainly near me, was looking around at each other going "What the fuck just happened there?!" :) Everyone saw the finish but it was the speed of the little passes from the corner that were just too much to take in, even if, like me, you could crane your neck and see the corner being taken.

What emphasised it even more was that when the highlights were shown, it had been too quick for the cameras too. They took the corner too quickly for the BBC cameraman.

Someone posted the goals in one of Sarge's Greatest Player threads the other day, if you want a look - I guess it was a Youtube clip. That clip pains me though because that game was about so much more than just the five goals.

I'm desperate to see the full highlights that they showed before the 1988 Cup Final (because it was so good they gave it a repeat and smooth Des Lynam introduced it with, "Now let's see how Liverpool really can play.")

It was the way Forest were so relieved that they had just kept us out ... and then in seconds we had scored anyway and there was awe and bewilderment all around.

I'm sorry to be so long winded but it was a special moment in one of the greatest games ever.

Tom Finney (Bill Shankly's favourite player, someone said recently), who was at the game, said afterwards something like, "We saw a display of football tonight that I don't think you will see bettered as long as you live."

I unfortunately didn't just miss one goal, I missed the whole match  :butt
I was stuck on a train travelling back to Liverpool, it was the only match I missed that season.
Gutted! I  might have to rub it in some more then ;)

Steve Sutton was the Forest keeper in that 5-0 game by the way - made several outstanding saves from memory. That's one of the games that I'm definitely lucky enough to be able to say "I was there (and watched every goal go in!)".

Yes, Sutton was the keeper left in awe, shaking his head. Loads of saves. We hit the woodwork several times too. Beardley was immense.

What an amazing game and I'm lucky and more than a little proud to have made the effort to get to Liverpool and be standing on the Kop that night.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/LmyzLuxRBUE&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/LmyzLuxRBUE&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

Motson: "Are Liverpool the best of all time?"
Sir Tom Finney: "Well ... certainly on tonight. Well I think they are, yes; I think it's fair to say. That's the finest exhibition I've seen, the whole time I've played - and watched the game." [At that time, he had been playing and watching the game for 42 years (not including the first 22 years of his life)!]

Sir Tom Finney as quoted on LFChistory.net: "It was the finest exhibition I've seen the whole time I've played and watched the game. You couldn't see it bettered anywhere, not even in Brazil. The moves they put together were fantastic."

Sir Tom Finney, Liverpool-Kop: "The game of the century" - Liverpool's destruction of Nottingham Forest in 1988, (I think there may be some paraphrasing here - the interview with Motson above is a direct quote): “I think that’s one of the finest exhibitions of football I’ve ever seen in my life, I mean it was absolutely tremendous; well deserved...the skills and the speed the game was played at was absolutely tremendous. I came away thinking I’ve been really entertained, and I’m sure that...the spectators here saw an exhibition tonight that will never be bettered, I don’t think”.

Who is Sir Tom Finney, OBE?

Bill Shankly: "Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age ... even if he had been wearing an overcoat."

Shankly was also once asked about how a top star of the day compared to Finney: "Aye, he's as good as Tommy – but then Tommy's nearly 60 now."

I've amended my posts slightly from the original

Excellent mate, excellent. My usual spec was on the right too, but that night I was on the left side of the Kop. I know I had a good view of our left wing so whatever magic was weaved there in the build up to Gillespie's goal I saw. I remember it being wonderful but what exactly it was I no longer know. Barnes had something to do with it I'm sure.

Anyway, I enjoyed your memory. It tallies with my own, even if there's still something more to discover.

Well, as you can see in royhendo's video, it came from a corner. I really remember it very well.

Go to about 59:45 in the vid and there's another moment of Beardsley genius. He gets the ball in the area and there are three defenders right there with him.

He does what no-one else would and turns on the spot and completely leaves all those 3 standing (and presumably embarrassed too). He gets in a pretty good shot and Sutton parries it away and one of the Forest defenders is happy to just put it out for a corner - that was the barrage we were putting them under that day; they were happy to concede a corner.

Then Sutton looks relieved and gets ready for the corner.

That's when everything just went too fast for a lot of Kopites, the whole Forest defence ... and the BBC cameraman.

I don't know who took the corner but it was taken super-quick and obviously went short to Barnes. He gets it to Houghton (Motson then mentions Aldo but only cos he thinks he's going to get it) and Houghton fizzes it to Gary Gillespie who smashes it confidently home (for his second goal in three games (two on the trot at Anfield) - he'd scored in the 3-3 against Man Utd 11 days before).

Where I was standing on the middle left of the Kop, I looked at someone to say "What happened?" and he looked at me to say the same thing. We all looked at each other in the melee doing the same and the general feeling was "Wow. This team is fucking phenomenal." It was just too quick for the brain or eye to even take it all in. Liverpool were so in tune with each other.

Motson: "Decisive finish. And a move so fast from the corner that all that Sutton had done earlier [i.e. keeping out Beardsley] was wiped out in another bewildering piece of Liverpool football. No wonder the keeper shakes his head. How do you cater for this?"

Then a bit later: "And isn't that again the Liverpool trademark? The opposition perhaps just slightly relaxing - or heaving a sigh of relief - after the goalkeeper had done so well to prevent Beardsley scoring in the first place. And in a matter of seconds the ball is in the back of the net anyway."

Beardsley looked like a god on the pitch, how we could do with someone like him in our team at the moment, I guess Benny comes closest. That run and shot off the bar and the 5 minutes of play in general around that moment were absolutely stunning pieces of footballing class
Would sacrifice Fordy in a sacred Mayan ritual to have him as the next Liverpool manager

11th birthday memories. I feel like an arl arse watching that.

Spackman is so easy to overlook in that team but he's the pulse of it in some ways - always an option for the short ball out of defence, neat and tidy.

Workrate of that team and just the all-round ethos is amazing. There's a moment in the second half where Clough is played clean through on goal, and it's Houghton tracking him back snapping at the heels (nailed on pen these days mind :D). You see the same with Digger on the other flank. And the freedom that gives Ablett and Nicol to get forward. That high line gives Gillespie and Hansen an easier job to step forward but my word are they effective doing it - the run by Gillespie which leads to the corner he scores from.

Kinell, I'm onto the pernod now so I'll shut up before I start on Barnes and Beardsley. Cheered me up no end to see that match Roy - thanks to whoever put it up.
