So I'm looking at going Amazon fire and ditching SKY TV.  Do i need to upgrade to Fibre to get the best from this - at the moment on Broadband.  Am assuming it's fairly easy to get all this Kodi stuff i've heard about and also see the footie as well.  Can anyone give me a quick pros and cons of this setup?  The Stick is on offer for next couple of days.  Cheers.

If you sign up to Sportsmania you're sorted for all the sports channels. It's quite simple to set up. You need a steady connection not necessarily a fibre one. 10mb should be fine if it's stable. Streaming is never a perfect science and the Firestick has it's memory limitations, so you need to delete cache (every day for me) and not store too much on it. One addon for sport (sportsmania ideally) is enough. Same with movies, Exodus and/or Pheonix should be enough. if you don't sign up to sportsmania then you may need a handful of free addons and sooner or later you will be let down.

Just as an example the other weekend, i watched manchester derby then stoke v spurs, liverpool v leicester and then the boxing with absolutely no issues, and all was pretty much percect on my tv as if i was watching hd tv (with sportsmania addon which wortks out £5 a month or so). That was through a firestick, with a speed of around 16mb. The more in the know's here will maybe suggest a raspberry pi for better memory.

Well the higher the download speed the better but as you can only use it over wifi you're limited as to the max speed you can get anyway. I've run them on standard 10mb broadband, realistically getting about 6 - 7mb max, for VOD content this is more than enough but you'd struggle to watch HD live streaming consistently at that speed. Plus the sticks only have 1mb of RAM.

Anyway, to install Kodi on a Firestick (ES Explorer by far the easiest way):

http://troypoint.com/how-to-install-kodi-on-fire-tv/

https://seo-michael.co.uk/install-kodi-on-a-firestick/

Exodus is the go to add on for TV/Movies

https://seo-michael.co.uk/how-to-install-exodus-for-kodi/

Phoenix is also decent:

https://seo-michael.co.uk/how-to-install-phoenix-for-xbmc/

UK Turk good for TV

https://seo-michael.co.uk/tutorial-how-to-install-uk-turks-playlists-kodi-xbmc/

There are free add ons for watching football, cant vouch for how good they are as I haven't used any for a while.

https://seo-michael.co.uk/how-to-watch-premier-league-football-using-xbmc/

For all other add ons the Seo Michael site is great.

https://seo-michael.co.uk/

Just make sure you maintain your device about once a week, clear cache and purge packages in Kodi, you can get maintenance add ons for this.

Sorry for this obvious to you, stupid question, guys. Is all the above info all I need to 'break' a firestick? A mate of mine says he can get a 'broken' one for about £50 but obviously a 'standard' firestick is only about £30ish

I wouldn't spend an extra £20, it will take you less than 20 minutes to set it up yourself if you follow the advice above

It's easy to load kodi onto an Amazon Fire tv/firestick.  Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can.  I used "appstofire" on an Android phone to send it to my Amazon Fire TV.  Loads of instructions on the internet.

Got my Fire Stick yesterday and took me about 15-20 mins (without doing it before) to follow the instructions up above in this thread and have Kodi (via ES), Exodus, Phoenix, DC Sports and Mobdro loaded on.

After saying what I said they updated the program today and now I seem to be getting a lot of buffering on channels that worked perfect yesterday.

Maybe its my Internet playing up.

They must have been using a dodgy stream scrolled down and found another feed to the channel now working ok on that stream.

Does anyone know how much data the firestick uses? Read reports from a year or so ago saying it ate data but this may have been a bug that was fixed.
Currently looking at extracting myself from virgin media but at least with them I get unlimited data.

There is no cap on data you can use, the amount depends how much you watch and what quality. Its your Internet provider that you need to worry about, there are some good unlimited deals out there though.

Xbmc used to float under the radar while piratebay was the bogey man, perhaps streaming will be next. Even If you get 2-3months well worth it, watch every film thats worth while without even starting on new releases.

I am on this site due to the newsgroup thread, so want to give back.

At worst you have a better Internet TV at best you get rid of sky

Check it for updates, go into your addons, highlight Exodus but don't click it, click on the context menu button (3 lines) and click add on information, check that auto updates is selected. Click update and see if the version number is the same as yours. If you're up to date then maybe do as Craig said.

2.1.2 I think is the latest version. Sometimes with add ons you have to update the repo you installed it from for it to update, just had to do this with UK Turk.

I've got a firestick and fire tv both currently running wookie lite, does anyone have an opinion on the mobdro app,is it worth putting on there?

Also im going to get a stick for my mum & dad but i need it to be relatively easy to navigate as they aren't exactly tech savvy, any suggestion on which builds may be best for TV shows & sports? Exodus for tv obviously but what about sports?

My old man is not exactly the patient type with this sort of thing!!  ;D

Mobdro is by far the easiest to navigate and use if you're not that tech savvy. However I tend to find the sports/TV streams on Exodus or Phoenix as being better quality most of the time.

Live TV seems more stable, worth a go if anyone is having issues.

If you're using Exodus and havent got it already I recommend a Trakt account, sign up on the site for a log in, install the add on and configure it, you can create collections, watch lists etc. You can sync content across devices.

Had been waiting for the upgraded version of this to come out but no sign of it so picked one up for £24 in the sales. Have loaded Kodi onto it with Exodus and Phoenix but a bit disappointed with the picture quality of live sport. Any recommendations? Haven't figured out how to get Acestreams on it yet - any good?

exodus & pheonix are for tv shows and movies etc not sports. if you want reliable football streams then sign up to sportsmania and add that, otherwise it's very hit and miss (mostly miss)

Yeah that will be fine but Amazon prime content likely to be blocked if you don't use a VPN. I use one of my sticks purchased in England in Portugal and of course Exodus doesn't care where you are. Also you don't need a fire stick, any android set top box will do https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=android+smart+tv+box and some of those are 4K and you can still use amazon, Netflix apps etc from google play

It's only really worth getting a Fire TV Stick if it's your cheapest option.

If it's not, get whatever is. There's loads of choice.

What do you mean by this?

Was going to pick up one for Christmas as a stocking filler for my Husband.

He had an Android box before with Wookie/XBMC/Kodi on it but it was so shit. We always ran into issues - stuff wouldn't load or the interface would delete itself etc... So we chucked it but he misses it, as he loves movies and TV. He has gone back to downloading torrents instead now but its an arse connecting the laptop to the TV, pausing it etc... We don't even watch Netflix anymore because its annoying connecting the laptop to the TV.

I was going to get a Fire TV stick and follow the instructions on here - load Kodi onto it and then the additional add-ons - Phoenix, Sports Mania (and get a sub), Exodus etc...

What is a better alternative?

Something I can pick up on the high-street? Don't want to order something online as I only have today and tomorrow morning to build it whilst he is at work.

It's for movies - not every day, but maybe 3-4 a week, maybe some TV series, we have full Sky Sports/BT sub so the only football we will watch will be 3pm games occasionally.

I use a Fire Stick for exactly the same reasons and it's perfect for it. Have used it loads since I got it and it's never had any issues.
