Plans for non-football events at Anfield

Liverpool ask City Council for permission to host concerts

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11397278/liverpool-ask-city-council-for-permission-to-host-concerts

Liverpool have submitted two applications to Liverpool City Council allowing them to host a range of concerts and non-football sporting events at Anfield.

The club hope the two applications will make the stadium "a year-round destination by offering more cultural and sporting events to supporters and those visiting the area."

Events could include boxing, GAA, American Football or music concerts, and fit with the City Council's vision to use music and sport to attract more visitors to the city.

The proposal will see an increase of up to 10 concerts or sporting events a year from May 2019, taking place mainly outside of the football season.

If approved, Liverpool will be also be permitted to screen more away fixtures and international games, similar to the beam-backs seen in the Champions League, where a sell-out 30,000 watched the final on large video screens.

Liverpool Chief Operating Officer, Andy Hughes, said: "The plans we are bringing forward would provide the city's residents with increased entertainment opportunities for music and sporting events whilst at the same time supporting Liverpool's vision to attract more visitors to the city.

"Our proposals not only support the city's ambitions, but showcase Anfield as a destination and will support local businesses and jobs in the area."

Anfield has previously hosted non-football events, such as the Paul McCartney 2008 European City of Culture concert, the 2016 Four Nations Rugby League Final, and could see a further variety of events such as boxing matches take place.

That would be a great idea and the plans overall would probably bring in a lot of money for the club and the local area as well.

Interested at the mention of American Football - the standard NFL pitch is 120 yards long - I didn't think Anfield was that long.

Cheers

20 yards of that are the end zones though, so maybe there is some way for the ends to be rejigged to fit it in.

You'd probably need some run-off space at the back of the endzone too, but I'm sure people much more experienced than me have worked it all out and think it's a go-er...so as long as the Broncos turn up I'd be more than happy!!

Cheers

So this might be what’s holding up the Anfield road plans? Designing it to adapt for multiple purpose use?

I imagine it's part of the thinking at least, which makes sense as an extra 10 events a year could add what, £10-15m income maybe?

Below is a link to an interview Peter Moores gave to FC Business a few weeks back where he confirms this very thing. Talking about the Annie Road expansion he goes on to say that work needs to be carried out to make Anfield more suitable for holding other non-football events:

Is a retractable pitch a wild idea?

Any additional revenue is good business, just as long as those meddling kids at concerts don't start digging up the pitch or something.

Does that happen at other football stadiums where they hold concerts? I assume they place temporary covers over it anyway.

I wasn't that serious, although it would be great if the sprinkles went off mid-concert.

The pitch is 40m too short and 20m too narrow for Gaelic football

It’s also too dry for swimming.

Saw Guns N Roses at Wembley and Maine Road in the 90's, they do lay a temporary floor across the whole pitch. Don't know what went wrong after the Stones played Old Trafford last week, because the pitch was fucked for the soccer aid game, you could clearly see the shapes left by the temp flooring. They may not have been as careful as usual, as there have been cranes visible inside the ground for a few weeks now, so they may be relaying the pitch anyway.

Be good for the club and the area if this goes ahead, you'd be looking at 60,000 or more per gig. The Etihad has seen Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift play there in the last few weeks, with Jay Z and Beyonce on this week or next.
