CL - NK Maribor V Liverpool FC - Tuesday October 17 - 19:45
« on: October 13, 2017, 06:04:20 pm »
UEFA Champions League
NK Maribor V Liverpool FC
Tuesday October 17, 2017
Kick Off - 19:45

VENUE: Ljudski vrt

Managers -

NK Maribor: Darko Milanič

Liverpool FC: Jürgen Klopp

Form -

NK Maribor: DLWWD

Liverpool FC: DDWLD

Game Three of Group E in the UEFA Champions League 2017. When the teams take the field and the Ref whistle blows for the kick off of this 90 minutes of battle on the football pitch between the Slovenian League Champions of last season (in fact they have won their league 6 times in the last 7 years) and Merseyside's favorite sons in red, the group table will look as follows:
1. Sevilla                  GD: +4  Pts: 4
2. Liverpool              GD: +0  Pts: 2 (total goals scored 3, 3 conceded)
3. Spartak Moscow  GD: +0  Pts: 2 (total goals scored 2, 2 conceded)
4. NK Maribor           GD: -3   Pts: 2
While in their respective leagues the Slovenians sit second to Liverpool's seventh. This should not trouble the Red Men regardless of Saturday's outcome with Jose's United. We have never played these before so I expect this to be an excellent outing, with the local supporters wanting to put on a show for the big name out of town guests. Maribor will not be a push over, if anything they will be up for this game. The home side have not lost in their last eight at home European ties, winning 5 and drawing 3 and are in excellent from over all winning or drawing 11 of their last 14 matches over all. However they have only one win in their last eight attempts against English opposition, a club not too far away from Merseyside, Wigan Athletic back in 2013.
Klopp will be sure to have his lads ready and focused on the task at hand, winning our first match in Europe this season. A win is a must. A win is the least what is acceptable. A 1 nil win will suffice as it is away from home and after an important League match (all matches worth the same number of points and yet some are worth more, more than the potential 6 point swing in either direction). A win with a return to the devastating and awe inspiring attacking prowess seen earlier in the season and over the summer would be ideal in most supporters minds. But a win is what is more sought after. Oh and also a clean sheet, if you please Karius et al.
Both sides have a few injuries to contend with, notably for the Slovenians, Marko Suler is out with an ankle injury while Dare Vrsic is suffering from a thigh injury. Klopp will have to do without Sadio Mane who suffered a hamstring strain while on international duty (could be out for six weeks, try to calm your swelling anger, I know I am), in addition it seems that Joel Matip is joining Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne in the physio's room as he has what is listed as an "unknown injury" as I write this. Also Joel Gomez is back from his one game suspension in European Football for the late Red against Seville. However Liverpool's attack is not stifled too much with Sadio's absence, as Salah is in great form, scoring twice over the break and ensuring that Egypt are qualified for the upcoming World Cup in Russia. Phil has scored in his last three appearances for the Reds, and Bobby should likely enjoy getting on the score sheet. Elsewhere during the international break, Henderson, Ox, and Can all got minutes with the big German scoring his first goal for his home country.

- Quotes -
"This is a decisive moment in the group - we need to be confident and brave we don't need to think about the last game. We play Maribor twice now. We've already wasted points so we have to be very good again it's an important moment." - Klopp

- Lineups -
LiverpoolFC: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Can, Milner, Salah, Firmino, Coutinho.

NK Maribor: Handanovic, Viler, Suler, Rajcevic, Milec, Vrohec, Kabha, Bohar, Ahmedi, Kramaric, Tavares.

- Officials -
Referee: Viktor Kassai (HUN)
Assistant referees: György Ring (HUN), Vencel Tóth (HUN)
Additional assistant referees: Tamás Bognar (HUN), Sandor Szabo (HUN)
Fourth official: Balázs Buzás (HUN)

Nice OP

We should be able to beat these. It's a good time to change a few faces as well, games coming thick and fast now so we have to use the options available. I'd keep both centre backs and keeper in though. They really need to keep that familiarity and understanding. I'd pretty much change 5 though after that. My team would be...

                              Mignolet
        Trent      Matip      Lovren     Robertson

                                 Can
                     Grujic          Phil
           Salah         Solanke     AOC

Gomez still banned. As well as Moreno been doing i think Robertson is a good option, good crosser of the ball and Solanke is a good target. Can at the base. Phil back in midfield, Grujic gets a chance. Oxlade Chamberlain was encouraging with his brief cameo yesterday. Should have enough there to beat these.

Personally go for this:

Karius

TAA            Matip              Lovren                Robertson

Henderson              Can

Salah                  Coutinho                  Ox

Firmino

Think Ox deserves a start from his impressive cameo against United IMO and needs a chance to build on it.

Karius; TAA, Matip, Gomez, Robertson; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Coutinho; Salah, Solanke, Woodburn.

I guess Woodburn could be a little risky. However I'm wanting Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield for this.

Actually, is Woodburn in the squad? EDIT: - yes.

Yep agree, but how Robertson is not in the matchday squad is baffling. Moreno will start.

In addition, just fucking win and 6 points in the next two games leaves us in a great position to get into the last 16.

If we're going to start Robertson and Chmberlain then Solanke should also start to give us someone to try and get on the end of their crosses.

Play AOC and Robertson (to give him minutes)

Play Mignolet too as Karius made a howler last match in CL

What is people's obsession with calling games that aren't must win a 'must win'? I mean I can think of loads of reasons why winning this would be really fucking useful. Just to remember what it feels like if nothing else. But must win? Why? In the context of qualifying from the group, explain to me how a draw leaves us unable to qualify.

Take any win, but we could do with winning emphatically. Confidence seems low at the moment. Would be nice to get a few goals and calm a few fold down. A brace for Bobby would be nice.
I think the same, can't stand him, but if you could have a Ł1million pound cheque or steve bruces head hollowed out and filled with pound coins which would you have?

1) Yes, at CM
2) Not for a couple of years, no rush

A win for us and Seville would go a long way, would be very useful to allow us to use the group stages to share more minutes around the squad. Most important in our front three and centre backs

Must have been an interesting scoreline when Sevilla and Maribor met, going by the goal difference!

Apologies for pedantry - good OP.

It's a great opportunity to win and possibly win by a large margin, and change lift the gloom that's hanging over a lot of fans.

It's not a 'must win', but the sooner we win and win well, the sooner the current narrative changes and can go on a run. God knows we're all sick of the current narrative.

We really ought to be winning this game. I think Oxlade-Chamberlain might get a start. His cameo against United was decent. It was obvious he was instructed to just run at their full back because Darmian was absolutely shattered at that point but he still done well with his directness and speed. Whether he plays centrally or on the wing I don't know but I do think he'll start. Trent will likely come in for Gomez and I don't see why most people want to see Robertson start to get him some minutes or because Moreno might make a mistake. Moreno has legitimately been one of our most consistent players this season and he had 2 weeks without a game with no international commitments so he'll be fresh. He IS our first choice left back after all and he's riding the crest of a wave at the minute. You don't not play him just because of some negative bias or because other players need to play. Moreno is playing well enough to keep Robertson from getting a chance. If Robertson wants that chance he has to wait or really impress Klopp in training, something Moreno obviously did to get another shot.

Anyway, a rant there. I think we'll win this easily enough in the end. Hopefully it's done and dusted early enough so some players (I'm thinking Salah and Firmino especially) can get a bit of a rest before the weekend.
