THE STORY OF THE BANNER
It's been seen all over Europe from Rome to Barcelona. But the question is, just where does that phrase 'Wine For My Men' come from? Time to ask the men responsible...
"We're not sure" laughs Ritchie Mearns. "It was a mate of ours Dave Pugh, he was always coming out with good sayings. We were in an offy once, and Dave said to the girl behind the counter, 'Wine for my men, we ride at dawn!'"
"It was fitting, cause we were always getting up at dawn to catch planes and boats" adds co-owner Paul Stewart.
The legend has had everyone trying to discover it's origins, from Henry V to the Crimean War. But even Dave Pugh, the man who came up with it, isn't sure, though apparantely he's hinted it might have come from The Three Musketeers.
The 14ft x 8ft flag, which has accompanied Wirral Reds Paul, Ritchie and fellow Peel Hotel regulars Albert Murphy and Robbie Walker across Europe, was put together with the help of Ritchie's mum and one Mrs Goff, and now features the full complement of four European Cups.
