Deleted the Napoli posts until it's proven one way or another.

Definitely a straightforward show of support mate.  A little bit of googling and the Gabriele Marcotti tweets confirmed that.  Not sure how or why anyone would think otherwise to be honest.

Read the same .

It obviously wasn't intended to be ambiguous , but I can see how it could be misinterpreted though. The banner just states the disaster date with words ' Justice is done ' - I can see how people could read it 2 ways .

chelsea fan here :-)

when it comes to football, nothing gives me more pleasure than liverpool losing (even more than spurs!)...

but on a human level i have always supported the justice campaign (one of the best gigs i have seen in recent years was the mick jones' justice benefit at the scala) and am really pleased that the truth has come out. i hope it gives those effected some much deserved respite. nothing can bring the 96 back but i really feel those responsible must be punished if no other reason than it might make people in positions of power think a little more about their responsibilities in the future.

apart from the minority of idiots (every club has them) everyone i know supports liverpool fc in this regard.

Looks like I got it wrong, I'll be very pleased if I did.
I won't post an opinion about such a sensitive subject again without being 100% sure of the facts anyway.

Apologies if this is already posted elsewhere:

9/15/2012 FC Dallas fans honor the Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. Dallas supporters groups fell silent and held signs during the third minute of the match against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Cheers owlsfan, and welcome. You can be pretty sure though that the SY banners referred to the police. SWFC may well be to blame to an extent, not least because of the lack of a safety certificate but I don't think you need be worried about anyone blaming Wednesday fans.

I saw a flag at Sunderland that said "South Yorkshire murderers", that saddened me even more.

Welcome mate. Thanks for your message of support but as Benitle said above, none of this is aimed at SWFC fans. I don't want to speak for those who made it but I'd be 100% certain that the banner in particular would be referring to the actions of the police that day so please don't take it personally.

Welcome Owlsfan, we've never blamed sheff weds fans and your contribution is welcomed. I've many friends in Sheffield my wife trained at the Northern General and the Hallamshire and we still have mates visit us now after twenty odd years.

I know lads from the Valentine made  a banner thanking Sunderland supporters for their solidarity. that also had on it 'South Yorkshire Police, Mass Murderers' but it was never against any of your fans.

Ive read this forum as a guest for a while....
Good luck in the future

While I cant speak for every Liverpool fan - the hurt and anger is directed at others in South Yorkshire on that fateful day.

I've met an awful lot of fans from all leagues in my (relatively) short number of years and the vast majority are supportive & understanding.

There's no doubt some Wednesday fans hold a different view, but thats the same as any club -  speaking to people who were there that day - the people of Sheffield did the city proud, whatever feelings may be directed at the Police or the High ranking officials at the club don't extend to the fans.

Owlsfan - thanks for that post.  The banner is definitely aimed _only_ at those responsible on the day and for the cover up afterwards.

As a fan who knocked on the door of a house just outside the ground and asked to use their phone I know that most normal Sheffield people were hugely supportive to us in the aftermath.  The woman in the house let me in, showed me the phone, told me not to worry about paying for it, and even had the decency to leave the room when I phoned.  Which was a good job given that I lost it when I heard my mum crying at the other end when I told her me and my brother were both OK.  I'm losing it now recalling it in fact.

Anyway she was motivated simply by human compassion, and was not concerned about leaving a complete stranger in her living room, and a "thieving scouser" to boot.  I wish I had not been so dazed that I don't recall the address.  I would have sent her flowers.  I think many fans that day have similar stories.

Anyway enough emotional rambling, just as we hope that most people would have the common humanity to recognise those black police lies for what they were then we must ourselves realise that those actions were not indicative of the normal working people of Sheffield or of SWFC fans.

Ive read this forum as a guest for a while, but being a Wednesday supporter I was very wary of posting on it...I didn't know whether to apologise for an event that was always out of my control...send sympathy to families who probably hate the word Sheffield or simply continue reading as a guest and a saddened football fan who almost stopped going to me own ground after 1989.
Heres my story of that day
I worked at a local hospital at the time...and was day off on that fateful afternoon, my wife was a senior nurse and on maternity leave.
We saw the events unfolding on the T.v..listened to the radio and as it became progressively worse, went straight to the hospital...I worked from 5pm until the early hours of the morning, I met a number of Liverpool supporters looking for family or friends...not one was drunk...not one was abusive, all I saw was horrorstruck bewildered football fans.
It would have been easy as a Wednesday fan to accept the crap spouted in the national press, it would have lifted the burden of guilt felt by it happening at Hillsborough, I and many other Owls fans knew different...as folk who knew nowt of football blamed fans arriving late...having a drink...pushing at turnstiles...we have ALL done it....Ive done it at big Wednesday away games...that was football then...up and down the country....From Portsmouth to Carlisle...96 folk do not die because of it.
When Liverpool next played at Hillsborough, there was a knock on the door of a resident near the ground,it was a Liverpool supporter thanking them for the cups of tea and offering to pay for a few of them using the phone after the '89 semi....Hooligans aren't known to do that very often...but these things were not reported on much...it obviously did not suit the agenda.
I saw a flag at Sunderland that said "South Yorkshire murderers", that saddened me even more.
Wednesday fans are ashamed that this tragedy occured at their ground, but Wednesday fans had no control over what happened on that day...nor did the ordinary residents that live around Hillsborough....The club itself?...well as a club we have to take whats coming...as fans of the club...well thats already started and we will have to take that as well.
I'm happy the fans of Liverpool have got what they rightfully deserve, sad its taken so long, and if that means Wednesday fans taking a few chants on the chin...its a small price to pay.
Good luck in the future

Welcome

As others have said The South Yorkshire mass murders banner was aimed at the Police & those involved in the cover up, not aimed at Wednesday fans, or the people of South Yorkshire.

Just as they have done since the enormity of the Hillsborough tragedy first dawned more than 23 years ago, Everton will once again show solidarity with Liverpool, their neighbours and rivals, before their Barclays Premier League showdown against Newcastle United at Goodison Park tonight.
Everton have got some brilliant plans for their game.

Just looked for  a picture of the valentine banner and an obscured one came up on owlstalk, in a thread where some are saying it reads south Yorks mass murderers and getting upset about it. I've seen the banner close up. It's thanking the Sunderland supporters for their solidarity, a few of the lads have made good friends up their through past trips and the slogan reads 'South yorkshire Police Mass murderers'

Same here mate, had the same experiance returning to the pub at the top of one of the hills...in those days pubs would be shut before 5, but the Manager opened it up when I asked could I use the phone...it was on the bar and needed money to use...as I fumbled for change the Manager lent over and turned a key "Free Calls" he said and told one of the lads to go outside and tell other fans. Its one of the stories I always well up about recalling, and like yourself, telling me mam that me and our kid were alive and her breaking down .... even after 23 three years, it still hits me.

On the way out of Sheffield you saw quese of fans lining up outside houses waiting to use peoples phones, as they opened their doors to them.

I saw a flag at Sunderland that said "South Yorkshire murderers", that saddened me even more.

I believe this is a reference to the Manic Street Preachers song "SYMM” which was about Hillsborough and the South Yorkshire Police; we discussed it in this thread (I believe Pheeny posted the lyrics of the song):-

http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=282324.0

As a fan who knocked on the door of a house just outside the ground and asked to use their phone I know that most normal Sheffield people were hugely supportive to us in the aftermath.  The woman in the house let me in, showed me the phone, told me not to worry about paying for it, and even had the decency to leave the room when I phoned.  Which was a good job given that I lost it when I heard my mum crying at the other end when I told her me and my brother were both OK.  I'm losing it now recalling it in fact.

Yes I remember this scene vividly, loads of Liverpool fans queuing up outside Sheffield homes to use the phone, each house with wide open doors and the occupiers’ stood outside offering to help us. The compassion shown by those Sheffield people towards us was deeply touching and I’ll never forget it.

Hi owlsfan. I worked in Sheffield for 12 months a few years back and lived just off Worral Road (drove past the ground every day). Still think it's a great city so please don't be hard on yourself. I don't speak for the families or anyone there in '89, but am pretty sure the anger has always been directed at the organised cover-up at the highest levels of the institutions responsible.

Been starring at the screen for 10 mins trying to find appropriate words to your personal account. I guess what you recall goes to show how many different people were affected by the disaster in so many aspects.

All the best to you mate.

Oh and I've enjoyed reading your posts today - many thanks.

Me too Owlsfan.

Why would you feel guilty??

You are a football supporter, so are we.  How can the injustices of the corrupt South Yorkshire Police and the FA be anything to do with proper folk living in Sheffield?  I did not have to call on the generosity of Sheffield folk, but plenty did and were not found wanting.

I have enjoyed your posts, and emphasise.... the people of Sheffield were brilliant throughout.  (Though how the fuck you elected Patnick is a complete fucking mystery)

I've worked in Sheffield for nearly 9 years now and I've never heard any bad mouthing about the Hillsborough disaster.

I'll be honest, it probably isn't talked about, but I don't think Wednesday fans have anything to be ashamed of. It was a culmination of monumental fuckups (and later criminal deceit) by the authorities, nothing to do with Wednesday fans.
Personally, if I supported one of the Sheffield teams, I'd pick Wednesday over Utd all day long..
