Great van Dijk moment when Barca restarted after we'd made it 2-0.  Barca tried to get a footing with some possession, ball gets played into Messi on the half-turn on the halfway line and van Dijk steams in and takes the ball like he's bossing some toddler in the park.  Barca didn't touch the ball again until ter Stegen was picking the ball out of his net at 3-0.

We scored straight from that restart, didnt we? Absolutely bullied them in those 2 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd goal, starting from his recovery. They were dazed.

Someone just mentioned on Reddit that "Virgil Van Dijk has faced : Messi, Suarez, Dembele, Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale, Modric, Neymar, Mbappe, Cavani, Insigne, Mertens, Hazard, Kane, Sterling, Aguero, Pogba, Sane and Son. He has been dribbled past 0 Times in over 400+ days"  If that is correct, it really is quite astonishing isn't it.

It’s the foot problem he picked up a couple of games ago according to Maddock.

Hopefully just resting him then

I think it's the stamp against Huddersfield soon after half-time, where he went down for sometime, but got back playing. That was a heart in mouth moment really.

If we can get another centreback in near Van Dijk's quality, we can have the best defence in the world.

He's just that good that I feel he'd improve a very good centreback to become one near his ability aslong as he's on the pitch. A natural born leader with great charisma.

My worry for next season is we don't get in another CB who can potentially replace him incase he gets injured.

As opposed to what we have now....?
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Yeah, hoping Gomez's luck turns next year. I'm not sure you can call it unreliable when you look at his injuries though - ACL's and leg breaks aren't the sort of things that happen because of some bodily failing like a Harry Kewell or Fabio Aurelio.

Think Matip's been just about continually available this season, apart from the first game of the year (when Gomez came in and took his place) and a spell in late December - early January when he must have missed about 6 games.

I think it's fair to say that between our 4 centre-backs we should nearly always have 2 quality options available. On the rare occasion when 3 of them are unavailable (which happened twice this season) Fabinho has stepped in wonderfully.

I suppose that depends on TAAs future position.  Anyway, Hoever is t 20 for three years so there’s plenty of time.

That’s how I see it too, no other team in the league has 4CBs as good as ours. Sure, it is Van Dijk who is the main reason for that, but Gomez was brilliant in the first half of the season, and Matip’s been outstanding in the second half. Lovren’s not bad for a forth choice defender either and Fabinho was great the 2-3 times he had to play there. We have this position covered.
