There was that moment where Son was running at him pretty late in the second half. It looked for certain like he'd got past Van Dijk, the first to do so all season. It would have been typical, it coming in the final. Then he just gets that extra burst of pace and strength, and clears it to safety. Just a colossal defender.
Does anybody have this clip - it was superb.

First time I appreciated how good this guy is was when we played Southampton at Anfield- I can’t remember what competition or year it was but my word- he completely shut our strikers down. He mentally and physically broke Sturridge that day. I had never seen a defender dominating strikers like that.

Think it may have been Early 2017 in the League Cup semi final. During that period we were absoluted gassed when Mané went to the African Cup.

Not just for this. Even at the Barcelona game he didn’t give Suarez an inch in terms of pace apart from the lapse on the first goal.

So fucking efficient.  Just holds his position, keeps holding, then when Son gets into a position where he's about to shape to shoot - afterburners on, that's as far as you go pal. Brilliant.

So much like the other game against them as well, where he holds position to stop Sissoko(?) from squaring it, then makes his move and Sissoko shits the bed.

Incredible.

I call the CL final a routine win - but that's only because Alisson and Virgil MADE it routine.

You look at this and realise why the club says they're not looking to do any major business in the summer.  Not unless FSG are planning to sink half a billion quid into human cloning anyway.

Fantastic defending, a tiny bit of credit too for Son staying oh his feet. If that's Kane, he knows the ref has a poor view and goes down, just in case.

Yeah, Son played it the right way trusting himself to beat Van Dijk. It’s as close as anyone has gotten to beating him. It’s great to see battles like that play out. A dive would have ruined the duel.

Kylian Mbappe and Gareth Bale left in dust as Liverpool player claims fastest in Champions League

Virgil van Dijk was clocked as the fastest player in the Champions League this season. The Dutch defender outpaced the likes of Gareth Bale and Leroy Sane and even his own rapid teammates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane with a top speed of 34.5km per hour.

Van Dijk, who was instrumental in helping Liverpool to secure the European Cup in the heart of defence, was ranked first ahead of some of Europe's most attacking threats. The centre-back's fastest sprint came against Barcelona at the Camp Nou when the hosts went bursting forward on a counter-attack after a Reds corner in the 92nd minute.

Here's the top five fastest Champions League players of 2018/19:

5. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) - 33.8 km/h

3. Kyle Walker (Manchester City) - 34.2km/h

3. Nemanja Radonjic (Red Star Belgrade) - 34.2km/h

2. Leroy Sane (Manchester City) - 34.4km/h

1. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) - 34.5km/h

Surpassed all my expectations.  I mean I had expectations but this fella just takes the piss.

I think he possibly is the best player in the world right now.

Take out the fact that attackers always get the credit, and its very difficult to compare different positions.

Based on influence/ ability in your position/ ability compared to your peers in that position.  He's simply peerless.  Absolute World Class.

I'd say he's the best player in the world right now.

As well he should. Son runs everybody in that situation. I was sat at a table with a Korean father and son pair who were obviously huge fans, and when Son picked up the ball and started running they freaked, because they KNEW that this was it, their boy was on his way. Seen it so many times.

Needless to say, they had to listen to a couple of rounds of "Hes Virgil Van Dijk, Hes Virgil Van Dijk" after that.  ;D Saved the game with that, and Matip didnt hurt any by forcing him back inside slightly. That was extreme danger that play.

What makes me so happy is that he'll never regret joining and choosing us over City.

He's a European champion and if there's a smidgen of justice he'll win Ballon d'Or. Stuff of dreams that we helped him achieve. And it's only the beginning - think he'll end his career being mentioned in the same breath as Baresi, Maldini and other greats not just in terms of talent but achievements as well.

What makes me so happy is that he'll never regret joining and choosing us over City.

One of his stated reasons for that choice is his wish to play football in front of passionate supporters. He'll be well aware that come-backs like the one against Barcelona are the stuff of legend, and do not occur without history and blood.

I don't think I'm the only one who knew the Cup was ours at that instant.

What's more impressive is that when Son starts to pass him, VVD stumbles for a stride or two as he accelerates.  He still caught Son a second later.

True, and he’s 27. Worrying times.

Does that mean he's stagnating at a time when he's not going to get any better? This might be the point when we can get the highest price for him.
