'Ghostbusters' (Assume Spoilers)
« on: October 9, 2014, 06:16:00 pm »
A lot of information floating about now, looks like five writers are working on it who include Harold Ramis Dan Aykroyd, are departmentalized along story, characters and screenplay. Etan Coen writer of Idiocracy, MIB:3 and Tropic Thunder. Also been confirmed it will have a female led character base, depending on what you read. Also, IMDB lists the above writers working on it, whilst the supposed director has said via Twitter:

Quote
It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call.

The romanticist in me is saying it will be great, but the cynic in me is saying that it will be another ruined classic. Ghostbusters, I think, is the finest comedy that side of the Atlantic.

Dunno, what you reckon?

Just leave the bloody thing alone! It doesn't need a remake. It's fantastic the way it is. It hasn't aged, it's not dated, it's still very watchable.

It's heresy.

Pure and simple.  You can do the cgi better, but the performances and interaction of the cast?  You can't match that and that's what made the film, not the subject matter.

Agreed.

I've always thought though that if there was to be some kind of remake, that it should be in the form of a TV Series with relatively new faces. I mean, that sounds awful in reality, but it would at least give it some scope to either imp...

I don't really see a problem with it.

There is an argument to be had over constantly rebooting rather than being original. Trouble is they are all trying to make money, so things which are likely to make money are going to get made.

It doesn't wipe out the original and to be fair, if its done right, it can work and I wouldn't mind seeing something more in that universe, it was a fun world they created. Cant really do anything about it anyway, everyone will watch it to see how much they hate it, so it will make money, should just hope for the best that its good. Or if you really don't like the idea, don't watch it.

If you're a fan should give the game a go, it did function as something of a sequel.

Same.

Hahaha, ney bother... Good to see people's passions against this 'reboot' overwhelm their recall. And rightly so I say. Can't argue with any of the points in here.

I did it not too long ago in a pub debate, saying something along the lines of "As long as Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis get top billing, I'll be happy". There where a few muttered laughs as mates thought I was being my usual sardonic self. Had to hide it this way because previous to my statement, I'd attempted to woo the table with my in-depth knowledge of the film.  :o

I have no doubt in my mind that it will fail. A rather daft comment to make without giving it a chance, I admit. Maybe I want it to fail, like the cynic I am; however, taking into account reboots as a kind of 'genre', it isn't a genre that isn't particularly flourishing at the moment.

Probably, they're going to need a total trendy hipster geek in the midst, as well as a very ordinary yet fashionista normal housewife, probably some kind of stand-up comic turned actor. It wouldn't surprise me as well if they cast someone to be a relation to one of the original Ghostbusters. And also throw in a 'bubbly and cuddly' actor for some kind of physical humor effect. They'll probably throw some kind of love interest in there maybe mirroring the Egon/Janine relationship. Wouldn't be too surprising if they had a hunky male office worker or governmental element. I wouldn't put it past the producers to use Harold Ramis' likeness to some effect too, perhaps in the image of a ghost or something as a nod.

I wouldn't put it past the producers to use anything they can really. Like employing aged thespian to either give a voiceover to some absurdly rendered antagonist, or even to portray a baddie him/herself.

Whatever happens, they must know that they are treading a fine line.

Well, in fairness, he and Aykroyd did work on some stuff over the years. One proposed script was sent to Bill Murray, who set it on fire, or threw it in the bin. (Something like that).

An all woman Ghostbusters?

To be honest, I'm not sure that would work well. Comedy is a big factor in the originals, and sorry, this will come off as sounding sexist, but I just don't find many women to actually be that funny. Disaster waiting to happen if that's the direction they want to "hypothetically" take it in.

Have you seen his original script ideas? They are a bit out there like I'm sure there's an interview on Youtube where Ivan Reiman says that he had to sit Aykroyd down and give him a bit reality check.

Would love to see another movie as I love Ghostbusters, but worried that the original is so good, a new one will pale in comparison. As for the all female cast? If that's the case, the casting needs to be spot on. I really don't find Melissa McCarthy funny at all. Emma Stonr would be good, I also like Mindy Kaling too.

I'd like to see the three original remaining 'busters in it too. Just hope it doesn't dilute the franchise by being terrible.

I'm a huge fan of the originals, heck I even loved The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series but a complete reboot? Fuck off!

I'm not that arsed that its all female, it's an interesting point of difference from the original but I think it should still exist in the same universe, so they could still reference the events and characters from the first two (and also makes jokes from). It'd give the cult following something to go on. For example when/If Slimer shows up it'd be the 'original' Slimer, the same one from the ballroom scene, just 30 years later etc

Imagine a cameo by Murray which shows Venkman's reaction to their jobs being taken by women? It could have been comedy gold.
