Ozark (Netflix Series)
« on: July 22, 2017, 04:02:52 am »
A new Netflix series released this evening.

"A Chicago-based financial advisor secretly relocates his family to the Missouri Ozarks when his dealings with a drug cartel go awry"

I might be biased due to it being based an hour from where I live, but just finished the first episode and I can tell it is going to be a great series. I'm not sure yet if admitting my location along with the thread for this series is damning or not  :). I haven't been so instantly hooked to a show like this (again, possibly biased) since I watched the first episode of Breaking Bad.

 ;D

He was actually quite good in a non-comedic role, but it's hard to look at him and not think Arrested Development.

I only watched the first few episodes, but I'm liking it a hell of a lot. Definite Breaking Bad vibes, pretty dark, well written, the location looks nice in a bit of a backwoods kinda way and it's got a few verbose, reasonably intelligent rednecks a la Justified or Hap and Leonard.

Binge watched it in one day. Hell of a ride, now I'm sad there isn't more. Really well written show and acting is top notch. Whoever did the casting deserves an award.

Not sure what I made of that.  Some good actors but felt like it was a bit like a show trying to be bloodline meets breaking bad.  Only really 1 'likeable' character for me and even he felt a bit bland.

I really like Jason Bateman but hes a bit 1 dimensional - plays the straight man very well in comedies and I didn't see much range - still feels like he's Michael Bluth.  In breaking bad, (which this show is obviously compared to) Bryan Cranston gave an acting class in his living of the character and its perhaps unfair after 1 series to make that comparison from a lead character but it felt like a 'lets get ourselves a breaking bad' show

Not sure if I'll rewatch

3 episodes in and I'm hooked and really enjoying it so far. Obvious comparisons to Breaking Bad but its got its own thing going for it too, starts with a bang hooks you in straight away. Very promising, hope the rest of it is of the same standard.

An hour from Chicago or from the Ozarks?

I spent many a summer in the Ozarks.

Will give this a shot soon.

It's probably a testament to the genius of Arrested Development but I'm seven episodes into this and I still keep expecting Bateman to tell his weird son about how's there's always money in the Banana stand

watched 3 episodes and really enjoying it, good acting, interesting storyline, great scenery.

My thought on the whole premise is
Spoiler
that this is happening in Batemans mind due to his life being mind numbingly boring and this is escapism. ie like when he was in the car with the hooker who wasn't actually there.

Watched the first episode last night & the film flew by, impressed me enough to give the rest of the season a go. Also helps that I love rural settings like this, Twin Peaks & the first season of True Detective.

I just finished watching the first season. The show didn't hook me at all in the first few episodes but found its feet near the middle and was good TV, but the last 2 episodes really elevated it to a new level. I feel like Netflix kind of set themselves up for some disappointed viewers by running with the Breaking Bad comparisons, because until the last 2 episodes it is absolutely nowhere near that quality, but if season 2 continues how this one ended then it could get up there I suppose.

If I was to compare it to another show, it would probably be the Amazon show Sneaky Pete. It had a very similar vibe, and the way in this every time the main character hit a win and something was going his way, something totally unexpected would happen immediately to mess it all up, it just really reminded me of that show.

But yes, decent show, looking forward to more of it.

I really hate Snell's wife, Darlene I believe her name is.

I thought episode 8, the flashback episode, was absolutely outstanding, the best of all ten, and really set up the last two episodes.

Opinions may vary, etc. :wave

Weird how Ozark sounds a bit like Noah's ark.

In the series, there were a lot of animals 2 by 2.
