Hooray, a welcome return of Stewart Lee. Proper comedian. Starts tonight, Monday 16 March 10:00pm BBC2

Tonight he's looking at 'toilet books'... should be good.

You can prove anything with facts

Saw his Edinburgh preview show a while back. Was an hour long warm-up for him to test the water before heading up to Scotland.

Even with raw material he still had the room in the palm of his hand with tales of the surreal (Tom O Conner and the sardine joke) to the picking apart of the Carphone Warehouse's stance following the Big Brother race row. 41st best stand-up? Nah, he's way higher than that.

Good stuff, though I'd prefer him to take potshots at less obvious targets. I've liked him, ever since he stood beside me at a Go-Betweens gig with a beatific smile on his face the whole way through. The man has taste.

Oh and did anyone see the name of the script editor on the credits? Christopher Morris. The one and same I presume, given Armando Iannucci was involved too? Signs, hopefully, that it might get even more scabrous.

All that 'you know the rappers' was so he could say 'you could say I'm not this books target audience' which was great. Fine show. Good to see something original on the telly that doesn't just go for cheap gags.

Quality. Stewart Lee just has an amazing way with words. The sort of bloke you'd like to just sit and have a drink with, and together discuss the world and its failings.

Some decent comedy back on the bbc, at last.

He's great, the show was interesting. I saw him demoing this material in Edinburgh last summer and some of it has been worked up well, some of it hasn't transferred to TV. The cut aways to sketches weren't strong enough in the main, so it will be interesting to see how it develops.

The calibre is definitely there; Lee is an exceptional live performer, and with Ianucci and Morris in control and with Munnery, Eldon, Law, etc pitching in it could be interesting. Stewart Lee could be the Dave Allen for the twenty first century if he concentrates on his game.

He pens album reviews for the Sunday Times, some pretty obscure stuff too. Varies from left-field American post-rock to some truly unlistenable jazz-tinged shit, but fair play to him

As I mentioned above, he's a huge Go-Betweens fan too, so I'll forgive him most things. Even the jazz tinge.

Just been reading some of his Fall reviews and other bits. I'm also into unlistenable jazz so we'd get on famously I think! Ha. He even likes the Ruins. Particularly liked this summation of the Fall: 'The Hex [Hex Induction Hour] era is great art, made by people who did everything they could to avoid looking or sounding like great artists.' On the nose that is.

Never liked his partner though back in the day, Richard Herring wasn't it? I think Lee was always the better of the two.

I've not seen the 90's comedian DVD. Does that have the 'Jesus' routine on it? I saw him about five years ago during the Jerry Springer furore, and it was just about the most compelling hour of material I've seen anyone deliver. I've seen Mark Thomas and Mark Steel, and their politically driven stuff can be both interesting and entertaining, but Stewart Lee hits deep philosophical territory with some of his work, and makes me weep with laughter.
Oh and rob, it was the Fall that swung it for me too.

Yeah the "Jesus" routine is part of 90's Comedian. Just a great show. Was lucky enough to see it live a couple of times, as always it was brilliant. As are all his stand up shows.

The only place that sell's 90's Comedian from new is Go Faster Stripe I think. Great little website.

Got all his live shows on dvd - utterly brilliant, my favourite stand up. 90's comedian is very strong material, there wont be anything like it on his BBC show for certain.
His '41st best stand up ever' dvd has a great interview by Johnny Vegas as an extra, well worth a watch.

Didn't find it quite as funny as the first week (too much to cover in just half an hour) but still very enjoyable. Lee is such an accomplished performer, itching to see him live again.

Aye, very true about Ant and Dec too.

The sketches were a lot stronger than last week all round I thought. The Del Boy bit at the end was great.
