classic soul - outstanding
« on: September 15, 2005, 11:32:02 pm »
Bought Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul" along with the soundtrack he did for Shaft the other day.

Today I went and bought "What's Going On" and "Let's get it on" by Marvin Gaye.

Fantastic stuff. Initially, I am liking 'let's get it on' and 'hot buttered soul even more than 'what's going on'.

I've always been a huge Stevie Wonder fan, but vow, these two other guys have put some great stuff out there as well.

Barry White was the daddy as far as I'm concerned, the amount of shags I had in the 70's was all down to him and his , "hey baby "thannnnnnng... ;)

All I needed was a Barry White Album and a girl who had a baby sitting job...  Happy fucking days.... :)

you need to get "let's get it on" then. The quintessential 'lovemaking music' album (great song by Barry that was, btw). ;D

Biffy clyro is a stupid name for a band

I think their original name was even stupider! Although i cant remember the name, beer has dulled me senses! Bluto what was their name before that you asked it as a question in another thread? Stupid name great band

"Walk on Bye" on Hot Buttered Soul is one of my favourite tracks ever. Try early Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield, Teddy Pendergrass/ Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, The Temptations, The Stylistics, The Chi-lites, Bobby Womack (esp Across 110th Street)  many, many more and all brilliant. The Isleys, Tower of Power, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin.........................

And whats wrong with the name "Four Tops"? There were four of them.....   and they were the tops.... listening to "It's the Same Old Song" as I type.....  absolutely fucking-a-number-one!

The coolest looking soul band had to be the Temps.... David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks - skinny guys in sharp suits with all the right moves!

James Brown is a legend and I'm definitely going to invest in some of his stuff.

Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is the work of genius. I'll have to give the Barry White trick a try sometime  :)

Gil Scott Heron is reckoned to be the Godfather of Rap. Don't let that put you off. It's not rap, its more soul with a political conscience. Songs about poverty, racism, Reagan. All delivered in this low, rich voice. Beautiful electric piano. Sax.

His Best Of is on BMG label. He has a big back catalogue to work your way through.
