After a new laptop.

Would like a Apple but can't justify cost.

Got a Sony Vaio which has been immense.

Budget about £400 but can stretch.
As always I guess it depends on what you want to do with it, but I recently got some HP machines for work and have been very impressed with them for the money.  I think the build quality feels better than some of the more budgety Lenovo or Acer models which offer pretty good 'bang for buck' but I think can feel a bit cheap.  The HP laptops also have anti-glare screens which I find much better than the glossy ones.

I try to keep my computers for at least 4 years (although the one I have at home is in its 6th or 7th year) so I try to buy the best spec I can afford at the time.  So, if it was me for about £400 I would get the cheapest i5 processor model and swap out the stock hard disk drive for a 2.5" 250GB solid state drive, if you haven't previously used a computer with an SSD the difference in boot up and loading times will be amazing.  It is a really easy job to do yourself and just slots straight in, but any computer shop or techie mates should be able to help.  You can probably get £20-£30 for the unused HDD on ebay.

The following HP models are very similar in terms of their specifications:

HP 350 G2, Intel Core i5-5200U, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.6" screen (£369.93 from BT or £392 at ebuyer)
HP ProBook 450, Intel Core i5-5200U, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.6" screen (£476.76 from BT but up to £150 trade-in/cashback or £444.76 at ebuyer)

There are lots of 250GB SSDs at under £100.  The Crucial MX200 series are not quite the fastest drives but have earned a reputation for being very quick and rock solid:
Crucial MX200, 250GB, SATA 6GB/s, 2.5", 7mm (£72.88 from BT or £75.46 at ebuyer)

The Probook is a bit lighter and has an extra USB2 slot, and comes in a bundle with various security features that you might not be fussed about.  Both have 2 USB3 slots and can take extra RAM if you should need it.

The 5th Generation i5 processors are dual core each with 2 threads so they can act like a quad core.  They have very low power requirements and feature a turbo mode where the processor can ramp up to 2.7 GHz from 2.2 GHz for more demanding applications.  Either macine should be more than capable of running almost any desktop software and multi tasking.  I am not an expert when it comes to games but I saw a youtube vid of someone getting 30fps on Battlefield 4 with this CPU and its built in HD5500 graphics , so I imagine that it would be reasonably competent at older or less demanding games.

Not quite as swish as your Vaio but perhaps better vfm?  :)

Which of these two laptops is the best option for running football manager 2016, I'm pretty useless when it comes to laptops/computers?
. . .
Your links didn't work for me mate so I don't know whether the above is any use to you - I don't think FM is particularly demanding compared to shooters like BF4.

Right, hopefully my links will work this time, getting one of these laptops for football manager, backing up photos and general internet use, which of these would be most suitable?

The specs look pretty much the same as far as I can see so just go with whichever one you like best or maybe the one with the best warranty. I recently bought an i5 laptop pretty much same spec and it's fine but I do not play games so cannot say what the performance is like. There is no difference in price so just pick one and go for it, never heard of Cube so I would probably go with the Toshiba but maybe someone on here has experience of Cube.

Hi all. Really need help finding the ideal computer for me. I am looking at buying a laptop as i have no room in my house for anything bigger! I generally need it for graphic design work so would need to run adobe suite with ease. I am also a big gamer so if I can find a laptop that can also run latest games at high settings and more powerful than the current consoles that would be great. Assume that any gaming laptop would run adobe programmes and large design files with ease anyway.

Any suggestion's would be a massive help. I have never bought a computer for graphic design/gaming before and with the many options available I don't know where to start!

Looking at spending up to £1000

Ideally would like it to be a tower so it could be upgraded but just not got the room, unless anyone knows of any other options out there that is not a laptop.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks a lot!!

What about an all-in-one? Better to have a bigger screen for any design work, might be worth a look - http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Computer/cat/All-In-One-PC

this one looks alright but criminally slow HDD - http://www.ebuyer.com/697919-hp-envy-23-n250na-aio-desktop-pc-l0v62ea-abu

I have macs myself and don't use them for games, but sure someone here can help with the specs you'd need.

It is always worth thinking how important portability is to you as desktop PCs will provide better value, higher performance and better upgrade options than the vast majority of laptops.  There are a range of small factor formats that mean a PC does not need to be a desktop hog any more.

Looking at your links it is quite tricky to compare they are quite different machines although both will do what you want given that you are not looking at particularly demanding applications.  At £500 you can and should be able to get quite a lot for your money these days.

The Toshiba at 17" is pretty massive for a laptop and is effectively a desktop replacement while the Cube is a traditional 15.6".  Both have a similar 4th generation i5 processor and similar discrete graphics processors (Cube is marginally quicker on both counts).  Both processors are a couple of years old now are slightly faster than the newer, marginally lower spec models I mentioned above, but use more power.  The discrete graphics will offer some performance increase for games but maybe not enough to be noticeable on FM - both will struggle in 3D games.  Both machines have 1TB mechanical hard drives.

The 'Cube' seems to be a Saveonlaptops special and is also sold through eBay, Amazon, Box.co.uk etc.  It is based (I think) on a Clevo 'barebone' chassis, and while this in itself is not a bad thing as they seem to be a respected manufacturer, you might get more for your money if you take advantage of the customisation options by going direct through someone like PC Specialist who can use the same Clevo barebone to start with and let you chose the bits you actually want.  For example, I don't want a 1TB mechanical hard drive in any of my laptops, they are slower, less resilient and use more power, so I would always go for a smaller faster SSD and use USB3/esata external storage for photos and videos.

Things like keyboards and screens are often a matter of taste, it can be handy to go into PC world or similar to see the screens and hammer on the keyboards of different manufacturers.  It looks like the Cube has a matte screen while the Toshiba is glossy and I expect has better resolution although this not mentioned in the specification (might be worth checking).  There is a hands-on review of the i7 version of the Toshiba here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Toshiba-Satellite-S70-A-10F-Notebook.103769.0.html.

Lastly if you are not a boffin or uncomfortable with re-installing Windows I would make sure that whoever you buy from has a good returns policy.   :wave

Could use a nudge in the right direction

Just started going back to school. Would like a dependable laptop that is efficient with office 365, and has the ability to run photoshop. Hdd space isn't big as I can always purchase an external drive, but performance is key. Also something I can carry around campus. $500 would be ideal before external drive but up to 800 is my limit. Reliability is big too.

Any advice is very appreciated. Thanks!

What are you going to use it for?

Lenovo's are decent laptops (although I personally prefer Dells for their onsite warranty).

I'd strongly recommend a minimum of an i3 processor and 8gigs of ram.

I find myself needing a laptop.

Needs to be cheap as possible.

Just to be used for RAWK/Ebay/Autotrader type sites. My internet is only 0.3 meg at best so it won't be used for streaming etc.

Any advice gratefully received.

If you are looking at new rather than 2nd hand, and looking at a Windows machine, HP business laptops are unspectacular in terms of design but offer decent build quality and quite a good feature set for the money.  I have been looking at these for my missus.

Similarly the best AMD processors are not as fast as the best Intel processors but at the same price point, and certainly at the low to mid range, AMD can provide really good value.

If its going to be used at home more than on the road, and you are not overly concerned with battery life, this HP 255 G4 with 2.5 GHz quad core AMD processor is quicker than pretty much any Intel i3 machine at the same money.  There is also free delivery and a £30 cashback deal from HP for purchases through eBuyer which brings the cost down to £240.

HP 255 G4 Laptop, AMD Quad-Core A8-7410 2.5 GHz, 4GB RAM + 1TB HDD, 15.6" LED + Webcam + Bluetooth, Windows 10 Home

HP Cashback
https://www.hppromotions.co.uk/PromotionCat.aspx?cat=notebooks

You can buy cheaper than this (e.g. Chromebook, Celeron, or Atom based machines at £150-£200) but I think at this level performance, boot and loading times are slow enough to be frustrating.  This HP will do everything you have asked and will be more than comfortable with office type applications and will probably even run some older/2D games if you turn the settings down a bit.

If you are looking at new

Thanks for that mate, I'll have a nosey.

It's just basic sites/general surfing, and to do my invoicing etc.

Like I said, my internet is too slow to support anything that would require a machine that is a top performer.

Cheers.

If it's mainly invoicing, you might want to have a look at www.freshbooks.com.

It is mainly for invoicing (which it does extremely well) and not traditional accounting software. If you asked Freshbooks how to enter opening balances you would be faced with a blank expression. Your accountant would probably rather you used an alternative to make their lives easier but you should be able to get away with it if you have a very simple business and are not VAT registered.

Yeah, I use office.
Invoicing is not a big part of what I need though, I'm a subby now so just 1/2 a week and save a copy. Long gone are the days I ran a business and needed decent software.

It's just a decent, cost effective machine that will do the basics I need.

Ah, I'm not sure what UK prices are like, but if that is the case, I'd go with any of the following brands:

HP, Lenovo, Asus, Dell - don't worry about the processor too much (ie. doesn't need to be an i3, can be lower spec), but do plump for 8 gigs of RAM if you can stretch the budget.

The reason I recommend one of the those above, is that they have proper official support websites that will keep your machine up to date with the latest drivers and firmware thus increasing reliability.

I recently bought an Asus X553MA for my lad (for schoolwork, only 4 gigs of RAM mind you) and paid around 230 quid (converted from Rands). The machine runs Windows 10 like a dream and he is able to do all his work on it without any issues.

Edit: I see that expertreviews.co.uk gave that model a pretty poor rating, but for the price, it does the job. I would recommend that you go 'bash the keys' yourself in a shop before committing though  :)

In short, anything around that price mark (230 quid) will do you fine.

I've got a week to get sorted.
The one thing I'm most worried about is the swap to windows 10. My mother bought a laptop earlier this year and I was expected to show her how to use it. It's got windows 10 on it. It might as well have been Chinese for all I could get to grips with it.

You get used to Windows 10 pretty quickly - not much different on the surface from seven in reality - lots different under the hood mind you.

As long as you install Firefox and make it the default browser (google that, it's a bit tricky if you haven't done it before) she (and you) will be fine.

If there is anything you're struggling with in Win 10, drop me a PM and I'll see if I can help.

Ordinarily it would be the manufacturers website. Given that it's a reinstall the drivers should be available.

What make/model is the laptop?

Acer Aspire .

Aspire is a notebook range rather than a specific model.

Anyway you should be able to find the correct driver here: http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers

Can someone in the know help me out with something?

Ive had my HP laptop for a couple of years now and Its started to get a big slow and laggy

Im reluctant to go out and spend £300-£400 on a new one so I was wondering of O should just swap my old HDD with a SSD

I currently have an Hitatchi HTS547575A9E384 HDD running at 5400 RPM with 750 GB (I think) and was wondering if I should upgrade it to a SSD to improve performance

I try and keep the storage pretty lean and transfer most files to an external drive

I mainly use it for streaming the match, editing video and audio, downloading movies and general surfing

My point is, I can pay £200 to get the SDD (and keep the rest of the guts of the machine) or £400 to get a new laptop

Any thoughts?

Back up all your stuff. Format the harddrive. Re-install your Operating System. Don't add loads of shit onto it.

POW!! Massive improvement in speed.

You'll have clogged it up with shite you don't want or need.
I love you all. Even Mancs x

that's Linux isn't it?  My brother in law put that (or similar) on my 10 year old PC, wiped all windows stuff from it and it works a treat now. Have to be honest though its only used for download, streaming football and the kids to watch youtube - still it saved buying a new machine.

Yeah. It's a user friendly version of Linux. Great way of making an older machine usable again.

. . . I can pay £200 to get the SDD . . .

You shouldn't have to pay £200 for an SSD.  If you are using external storage for media files try using a smaller SSD - say 250 GB?
Crucial do a great line in rock steady mid-tier drives this one is only £65.  The difference in performance will be remarkable compared to a 5400 rpm HDD.

I would check the processor in the laptop before deciding.  Even though the machine might only be a couple of years old the processor could be a couple of years older than that - even then, if it is quick one, you could easily spend £400 on a laptop and end up with a slower processor (albeit a more efficient one).

RAM upgrades are another simple DIY job and while you might not get earth an shattering performance increase, moving from 4 GB, say, to 8 GB would certainly help with things like Photoshop and video work.  Depending on the laptop you may be able to use faster RAM as well.

As a final thought, you should not underestimate the effect of a fresh Windows install on the responsiveness of your laptop.  If you have an existing legit copy but no disc, you can download a W7 iso direct from MS - just need to type in the product  key.

Hi guys

I am a bit of a girl (which I am) when it comes to laptops.

I have just started a course at work in which I will need to write essays and create presentations. I have an iPad but it doesn't really do the job (I don't think). Any tips or suggestions on what I should get?

Am open to anything but a Dell (lots of bad experiences with them).

Just a thought (don't know anything about Apple) could you get a good keyboard to link with the iPad?

Failing that, what's your budget?

I guess I could (don't know a whole lot about these things either) but I was told word/publisher etc doesn't work on iPad too well, if at all.

Budget is £350ish. Could go a little higher if needed.

Word does work on an iPad. It's a free download from the App Store

Likewise for presentations you would require PowerPoint rather than publisher.

Download them and give them a try before splashing out on a new laptop.

That will teach me for not having a look on the App Store first! Thanks!! I'll check them out and maybe just get a keyboard of some sort to connect up if it's possible as I for some reason work better off a keyboard rather than typing on the iPad!

Looking at getting a new laptop, my current one is about 6 years ld and about to give in.. It's so slow to load up nowadays. I'd say the biggest thing I'm going to be doing is playing games like FM - then just browsing, streaming, using word etc. I want it to be able to do all this with ease and no lagging especially on FM! Current laptop can't even play it it's that slow. So what price would I be looking at for this? Storage isn't an issue as I'd put everything on an external (photos, music etc) I guess FM needs quite a bit though. Any recommendations would be great just to give me an idea.

Thanks
