The 2019 Copa America takes place in Brazil - from Saturday 15th June to Sunday 7th July (UK dates & times).

There are 12 teams competing in this, the 46th edition of the Copa America tournament...

10 teams from South America (CONMEBOL) - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay & Venezuela.
2 teams have been invited to play in the tournament - Japan and Qatar. (Qatar, as hosts of the WC2022, have been invited so to play some competitive matches.)
US, Mexico and other CONCACAF countries are playing in their Gold Cup. French Guyana, Surinam and Guyana, despite being in South America, play in CONCACAF competitions.

There are 3 groups of 4 teams - each team playing 3 group games. The top 2 teams from each group, along with 2 best 3rd placed teams, then progress to the knockout stages; the quarter-finals, semi-finals, a 3rd place play-off game, and the Final itself.

Apart from the Final, all knockout games that finish level after 90 minutes will go straight to penalties - there will not be an extra-time period of 30 minutes.

Group A - Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela.

Group B - Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar.

Group C - Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile, Japan.

Liverpool players at the tournament are - Alisson & Firmino, for Brazil. (Fabinho bizarrely wasn't selected for the 23-man squad).

Mad Fabinho isn't in that Brazil squad. I'd have him over Arthur, Willian and Allan, even if those players play in more advanced roles.

Delighted Fabinho isn't there, let him rest up after a tough first season over here.  Bobby had a few weeks rest ahead of the CL final too, so he should be in decent shape when he gets back to Liverpool.
Sit down, shock is better taken with bent knees.

Nothing will ever beat Scolari's decision to leave out Miranda and Filipe Luis from the 2014 World Cup squad. They were part of the best defense in Europe that season and he left them out  ;D

Maradona leaving out Zanetti and Cambiasso for the 2010 World Cup squad after winning the treble with Inter surely beats it.

Good shout, fuck me how could I forget that one. Loved Zanetti what a player.

I hope Qatar or Japan win, they'll think twice about their invites in the future.

What an utter mass that was.

Peckermann in 2006, not bringing on Messi in extra-time against Germany was mad as well

Premier Sports - worth stumping up?!

26 Copa America matches for £10 doesn't seem bad at all - https://www.premiersports.com/football/copa-america-coverage.html (plus whatever else they show too ;)).

Though likely depends if you're a night owl / and how many of the matches you're actually going to / able to watch.

Premier Sports do repeat the full games at more reasonable/sociable times; according to their TV Schedule - https://www.premiersports.com/tv-schedule.html (ie, the Brazil game is repeated tomorrow at 8am and 6pm).

Yet could also be worth giving the streams a go (for nowt)...

Rich football history, football mad country and a squad that’ll add quality to the tournament. What more do you want?

Why is Qatar in this?

With only 10 countries in South America, they always fill out the field to 12 by inviting two other nations. Japan, South Korea, Mexico, USA, maybe New Zealand iirc.

Qatar are invited because as being host country in the World Cup, they are in automatically. So they don't play "competitive" matches in their region.

Mexico and USA are in the Gold Cup this summer. So no go for them.

The bigger issue is the Copa becoming a seemingly yearly tournament now.  I think in the long run it hurts South American players in that they almost never get any time off.  Sanchez being possibly the best example.

Looking forward to seeing how Firmino does here.

Not quite - they have changed scheduling so it's parallel to (same year as) the Euros instead of the year before.

So we'll have the Copa America again next year but then it's going to be in 2024 instead of 2023 (as it would've been under the current schedule).

Gotta say, Brazil looked fairly shit. Not a whole lot of quality teams this Copa, on paper.

I can't believe Brazil weren't up 4-0 in first 30 mins. Conditions looked as messy as Bolivia at the back

VAR pen for Brazil first took just over 4 mins

Added 4 mins Injury time

The number 1 thing they have to improve

Yeah. That was a mess, although a clear pen. There was also a yellow card incident in the first half that took a while. Just have the VAR official make the call in the booth like at the WC.

Still can't see beyond Brazil since they are at home. None of Argentina, Uruguay, or Colombia have beaten Brazil in Brazil for decades (not sure Colombia ever have). Okay, they could go out in extra time or penalties but it is the host's tournament to lose.
