I still remember walking onto the Kop, first game of the season and seeing a fully seated Annie Road (except for the away corner), all done in Crown paints colours and thinking what the fuck?

"You'll never seat the Kop" and "You can shove yer fucking seats up yer arse" rang out that day.
Jurgen, you made us laugh, you made us cry, you made Liverpool a bastion of invincibilty, now leave us on a high - YNWA

Predates the battle of Spion Kop!

This could be any footy pitch or stadium in the World...but no mistaking Tommy Lawrence in goal (also the Ajax game)

This thread is absolutely brilliant by the way, Anfield was a bit of a dump years ago but nobody gave a shit, as long as you got in, that was all that mattered.

It's all very clean and beautiful now of course, but sterile too my opinion. But that's progress, I suppose.

The Kop and Annie really were in a state by 1990 to be honest. The Kop in particular looks decrepit in some of the close-up photos. It's just a completely different world now, and why I laugh at the nitpicking online about modern construction. The broken glass was always a nice touch.

Yeah, pretty sure that's them - we used to go in either in the turnstiles on the front, but mainly the Main Stand side and they look dead familiar to my addled brain

That's where we used to always go into the Kop. Off the bus at Spellow Lane. Walk past the Pit of Despair. Through the park, through the little alleyway off the park where the away fans would get smashed everywhere, down the side of the Main, then in at those turnstiles.

Those were the days...

Any idea why they chopped part of the original ramp up and put in the black staircase? Maybe it was just too steep/unsafe.

It why I've always searched for these images and stuck them in a folder. You have the one view - the mighty Anfield and Kop, European nights and superstars, but on the other hand its just a few patched up bricks, whitewash and grime with wires sticking out in places and glass cemented on the walls. But the collective civic pride of the people elevated it far beyond the most expensive buildings now. And now it's all gone, and societies sense of personal freedom in public spaces fading with it. It's fascinating.

The old Spion Kop was always impressive to me. I never even gave the rest of the ground a thought though. It was just 'home' and the aesthetics didn't come into it. It was all about the atmosphere and the football itself.

My first game was against the Mancs in 1971. We were right at the front of the Road End and I remember looking at the heaving Kop and thinking Wow!

These days you've got keyboard fans more interested in whether the roofs are symmetrical or not.

The Anfield I grew up with had very ordinary brick facade, but history, hopes, dreams, magnificent triumphs and bitter defeats oozed out of their pores.

Not sure the year, possibly 60's - from one of the taller buildings down at Canada dock.
Actually, looks like a big red crane on the main stand side, and actually no sign of the main stand, so maybe construction In progress. edit: Its 1970
