Agreed it's still very enjoyable if your expectations are reasonable. I just wish the writers would be aware enough of where their current strength lies and ditch the Iron Throne plot entirely. Don't even mention the seven kingdoms again until maybe the very end.

But Cersei is still plotting to retain the Iron Throne, albeit without the elephants, so the Throne is still the elephant in the room, Night King or not.

The kid on the wall was Lord Umber, the one who Sansa sent back to gather the rest of his army, not the kid climbing at the start.

The kid clambering about at the beginning of the episode was trying to get a good view of the Unsullied marching into Winterfell.

Anyway I enjoyed it. No need to over analyse.

I enjoyed that eposide, predictable as it was. It put all the pieces into place for the wars to come, and thankfully we dion't have to waste time in Bravoos and Mereen going forward.

Reading other posts on here about abandoning the Iron Throne thread of the story makes me wonder in when they will finish the Night King story. I think they might defeat his army earlier than the last episode which might lead to a kind of Return of the King (no pun intended) last episode, where all the politics will be resolved. And I don't know if I like that idea to be honest.

But Cersei is still plotting to retain the Iron Throne, albeit without the elephants, so the Throne is still the elephant in the room, Night King or not.

The inelegent solution were for these episodes to mostly ignore her and focus on the night king and the characters battling him, and have her presence as unspoken name that they all decide to deal with later. The better solution would have been to kill her off earlier and have it already settled with some twist, like Jon's heritage, at the end.

But it is what it is, and I'm enjoying the many good parts between the characters that we get.

Some of the reunion and rom-com type stuff was a bit cheesy for my liking. They have to have some scenes of humanity to show what everyone's fighting for but it doesn't seem to be this show's forte.

In saying that, I really liked a few of the scenes. The undead kid on the wall was brilliant and any scene with Bran is very unerring - him just "waiting for an old friend" before Jaime turned up was great. Expecting to see more of that as this season is bound to get pretty dark even by GoT standards.

Pity it was around 50 mins long though.

Seen theories going around that
Spoiler
Bran is somehow the Night King because he 'went back' and warged himself with the Night King after he acquired his powers. Wasn't he told it was inherited as well? And when Ned Stark was executed he looked up at the sky and a crow flew away... It almost makes too much sense which is why I don't believe it.

Ah Jill, I made no comment as to whether it was the right call by Dany or not, I just think that's the reason why Sam was pissed off about it...beyond the obvious point that half his immediate family were killed. I also think he could have accepted his father dying, but not his brother. In any case, I'm with you and Dany on this one, they had proven themselves untrustworthy and could have caused further trouble. However, something to think about: if Robb had killed Jaimie when he was captured way back in Season 2, what rippling effect would this have had on the story? What impact might Jaimie have on the events that will unfold in the next few episodes, that otherwise might not have come to pass if Robb acted like Dany did? There probably isn't enough time left in the series for Randall to go through an arc of redemption like Jaimie, but might Dickon, who didn't appear to be as cold as Randall, have played a huge part in the great war to come?

Considering most of the complaints the last few years are about the plot/dialogue, it's easy to forget they've killed off most of the charismatic characters. Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage are probably the only two great actors left (at least as far as main characters), the rest are mostly just average and there's so many of them who have to share screen-time. Even if most of them die in the next few episodes, the two 'leads' Jon and Dany, don't blow anyone away either.

There's some terrific actors, and some very average ones. The two leads you mention belong in the latter camp. At the other end of the scale, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau managed to steal the whole episode and he was only in it for a few seconds.

I love GoT but the script and some of the acting is The Walking Dead at it's worst.

I can see the similarities, but GoT on a bad day is still infinitely better than what Walking Dead became pretty much any time after S2.

The disparity in acting ability has always been quite startling in Thrones to me. You've got the likes of Charles Dance, Dianna Rigg and Jonathan Pryce, all superb....and then the completely wooden, one-note Brann and Daenerys who've barely been able to register a single emotion in the 7+ seasons we've been watching them. As others have alluded to, Nikolaj Costar-Waldau's fleeting moment with Brann was probably the best moment of the episode. That is acting, and a few too many of the main cast can't do that.

I thought it was a fairly poor episode, and I'm surprised at the overwhelmingly positive reaction.

It feels like the gears are grinding agonisingly into place. A pure scene-setter, where despite the reunions (or because of the reunions?) it seems the characters barely know each other and are using the stilted dialogue of strangers. But I suppose you couldn't do too much about that unless you set the pieces in place the previous season.

The best part was the first scene, which was a really nice mirror of the same scene in S1E1. Everybody loves a callback.

Spoiler
The stuff in King's Landing in particular smacked of: 'These characters are doing next to nothing right now, but don't forget about them because they'll be important later! Also, don't forget about the Golden Company, that mercenary company that had a whole backstory in the books but here is just a reason for Cersei to still have an army. We told you about them last season and now here they are, dressed in gear that's not so different from how the Lannisters look anyway.'

The Last Hearth bit was cool.

I'm hoping that we lose a medium level importance character from Episode 2. Obviously Episode 3 is the 80 minute one and when the action really kicks off, but it would be nice to lead into that with someone already dead. I'm thinking someone like Tormund (but not Tormund), who's a fan favourite and whose death would be a pall over proceedings before they actually kick off and/or give the battle to come an emotional spur.

Since it was an episode of reunions and one where it looked as though they felt compelled to remind us of everyone's roles in the series, where was Brienne of Tarth then?
