God knows, Boris took his time analysing the chess board before he decided to be a Brexiter. And when the results came through and Cameron distanced himself from the big red button marked article fifty, Boris saw his queen being removed from the table, and he was visibly, well and truly a defeated man.

It's taken the best part of a week but Gove's Machiavellian manoeuvrings (hardly killer blows) have been seized upon with glee by the (now) jovial Johnson as he knocked his king over and delivered his final punch line – and I think it is his final punchline.

He is now toast. I can't even see him having a 'game show' future as he has now become not just a laughing stock but much much worse. His frolicsome gamble to become PM has wrecked everything in it's wake – we still can't even begin to calculate the cost. Hero to zero doesn't even come into it. The knives are out and hopefully he gets the full treatment. Hopefully he won't be able to prevent himself from dishing a good load of shite over Cameron for his roll in all this also.

Fury among some Boris backers. 'I'd rather vote for Pol Pot than Gove' says one new May supporter. 'Treachery' says another.

'Speechless with anger' spits another new May backer who was texted by Gove spad at 9.30 last night to make sure they were at Boris launch

Conservative MP Kwasi Kwarteng:

"I think it was craziness. I think it was a spasm of immaturity. He is a man who knew Boris for 30 years and today all of a sudden he says he's not fit to be prime minister even though they led everyone to believe they were coming in to a deal. This is the kind of thing we see in student union politics frankly."

Anyone other than May as PM will do me fine reason I don't want to lose my right to have a family with a foreigner, secondly I don't want to be under surveillance 24/7. Last thing I want a right wing anti immigration fanatic as our PM, her previous immigration laws against non-Eu citizens were pure evil.

Have you not considered moving to another EU country with your non EU Spouse under EU Free Movement  - you till have a minimum of 2 years to do this?  After exercising treaty rights in that EU State you can then return to the UK under Free Movement rules currently in place.

No Tory leader is going to change the rules for Non EU immigrants.

Well depends on what drives them more, surviving a general election or the wider interests of the EU and whilst many can say the EU is bigger than those two countries they do have a huge say in it's direction. Playing too much hardball could have a short- medium term negative impact on their respective economies which is bad for votes. If the UK leaves it too late to either back away or invoke article 50 then it'll be worse for us. It'll be down to timing imo.
