Prince Rogers Nelson. 1958 - 2016.
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:05:54 am »
For many years Prince has banned video clips of him on youtube and so.

They are now appearing there in their thousands so the little man must of dropped his guard.

One of the greatest live performers of our time and any time.

Should check this an all -

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q-LvHoyaDok?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB&amp;amp;rel=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/Q-LvHoyaDok?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_GB&amp;amp;rel=0</a>

Its part 6 of 6, so the end of the show, the same guy has put them all up, but they arent all available for some reason. There is a torrent out there for a vhs rip of it as well.

I remember watching it when it was shown on CH4, taped it and used to watch it so much the tape wore out.

I was in Gothenberg/Sweden recently as a guest of NUDIE Jeans and while I was there a music festival was going on, PULP and Prince and a canny few other top bands played.  Prince was brilliant.

I'm bumping the thread, to post this great clip. I don't know how long it's been available, but I saw it for the first time the other day, and I've been playing it repeatedly since then.

It's from 1983, Prince and his new band the Revolution are doing a benefit concert, for the Minnesota Dance Theater Company, in Minneapolis. It's one of the first times that they play live together, and the debut of then 19 year old guitarist Wendy Melvoin. I didn't know about this recording, but apparently this is the first time 'Purple Rain' is played live (a year before the album and movie were released), the first time an audience gets to hear it and an edited version of this performance is the actual track on the album. It was shortened, a verse edited out, but most of the vocals were done right there and then. Atleast according to the comments in the clip. I don't know if that is true or not, but regardless, it's 14 minutes of pure magic. One of the best performances I've ever seen caught on tape, perhaps the best. Despite Purple Rain being far from my favourite Prince song. Hope all Prince fans on RAWK (don't seem to be that many when I searched for a thread), enjoy it as much as I do.

Nice, I'll have a look at that tonight. Youtube is now full of quality live clips from the 80's. I could spend a week searching and watching.

The BBC did a brilliant Omnibus documentary on him in the early nineties, gonna have to search that out. Seem to remember separate clips of the wee man on stage with Ronnie Wood and Miles Davies.

Good stuff.

I was reading an old'ish Hendrix autobiog a few weeks ago that claimed that there is an absolute killer cover version of Purple Haze done by Prince that's languishing in the vaults somewhere. That could be interesting.

Well worth watching this by Kevin Smith about his experience of working with Prince

Came onto this thread to post those exact videos.

Amazing story :)

He talked to that woman again after the DVD got released. Apparently Prince was really pissed off and tried to find the non-disclosure agreement that all his staff have to sign so he could sue Smith for libel but because Smith was so busy during filming he never got round to signing it

Ah, that's makes sense now. I was like 'fuck me' have they done some kinda back to the future trickery as i thought it was a young george!

Nice licks from Prince, nearly took it beyond what's right for that song but just about managed to stay on track.

I'd get a version of this isn't wasn't for geoff lynn's fucking voice, nope can't stand it, petty was fine (sounded like george to me)

I only like two beatles' songs and this is one of them, a good version from that ensemble (now back to Lost Johnny motorhead, youtube trolling takes you all over the place and inevitably back to your youth!)

He was a genius in the 80's. I saw him on the Loversexy Tour in 88 too. At NEC birmingham. It was a phenomenal show.

I was in the crowd and standing right next to me dancing and swinging his oiled, permed locks was Craig Johnston. Skippy's a right ol mover.

Firming as a Sat/Sun headliner for Glasto

I know, it's making me feel a bit sick with envy, the little man and Arcade Fire headlining at the same festival would be like a dream for me. No tickets obviously.

Also the best live performer you'll ever see, if you get the chance, go see him.

I believe you.
If he ever comes around near me I'll seize the chance.
