At one point I fell asleep watching it in the cinema. Worth watching it once if you're bored out of your mind, so you can fall asleep.

I liked it, I mean its Agatha Christie what ya expect bombs going off and all out action movie ffs ;D Murder on The Nile lined up after that final scene.

This looks like what Prometheus wanted to be.

Don't read the comments. They're toxic. There's some absolute c*nts about these days.
Is that based on those Southern Reach books? Read the first one and couldn't really get into it, but wouldn't mind seeing what they do with it as a fillum.

I've not read any of them; but yeah, it's based off of those books.

Agreed some of these debates aren't for this thread, so we'll put them to one side.

The points I'm making about the comedic and violent aspects are due to my belief that a film that receives an Oscar nomination needs to be held to a higher standard. The use of these devices is as you mention fairly normal within the horror genre, but an Oscar nominated horror movie isn't supposed to rely on the normal simply because they're supposed to be of a higher standard.

I understand that there have been many movies that have been nominated in the past that didn't deserve to be there. Some of them are farcical. What I'm suggesting is that people will look back and think the same of Get Out. It's a good film but that is about it.

I'm also not saying a film should be disregarded because it is political, far from it. A great movie with a message that resonates in the political climate, is all the better for it. I'm just saying sometimes the cart can be put before the horse. A movie might have a message that resonates, but if its not a great movie in its own right then for the Oscars, this should matter for little. I'd actually say most Oscar winners quite rightly meet both criteria. Moonlight is a great example of this.

I'm concentrating on Get Out because I've seen it. The only other one I've seen is Dunkirk, the difference in quality between the two is vast. If the Darkest Hour and the Post are at the same level as Get Out, I'd be arguing the same (quite often historical dramas can be over-hyped so it could well be the case).

For me it feels like the increased number of nominations will lead to some films being added onto the list that aren't really worthy, or at the same level of those really competing for the main award. It is highly possible that the additional spots that can be used up, will be used in order to appease.

I think Get Out is a great movie - particularly if we're going by Oscar nominations as a measuring stick. It's well known fact that there are formulas and genre tropes that work well for Oscars. I don't think the fact that a film complies with horror genre tropes should count against it.

Anyway, we'll just have to agree to disagree, mate :)

For what it's worth, Get Out is the best reviewed movie of 2017.

So far, 484 critics have included it in their top 10 lists for the year, and 76 of those named it as their no.1. In second place, Lady Birds made 400 lists and 46 top spots.

I realise there's a little bit of overlap between critics and the academy, but there are also differences.

The Infiltrator - It's enjoyable, particularly as Cranston is great as you'd expect, but the plot really does not flow well.

Nocturnal Animals - A bit more development of Adams' character and plot to match the thrilling scenes within Gylenhaal's novel and this really could have been a masterpiece I feel. As it was, it was still ingeniously unique and as enjoyable to reflect on as it was to watch.

Why Him? - Why did I watch this movie?  ;D

I watched Three Billboards. It was decent, but not as good as his other work. There were too many characters to feel much empathy. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood while watching. It also felt like a homage to other films.

Spoiler
The last 5 mins were just daft. “Oh, we haven’t found your daughter’s rapist, but I know another one. Fancy a road trip, to kill him, with the racist black man torturer you firebombed, but we’ve tried desperately to give some redemption?”

Watched Joe the other night with Nicolas Cage .He gets some almighty stick for thee roles he takes and deservedly so  , but he was spot on in this .

It was a gritty , realist type film , with a stand out performance by Gary Poulter . Watch the film and check him out out as to why !

'Get out' decent enough horror tale - like an extended episode of Tales From The Crypt or The Twilight Zone..but for me another film riding the zeitgeist wave...similar to Lady Bird in that respect...both ok movies but certainly not deserving of the rampant praise that they've garnered ......but that's Award season for yer

Wall-E is a masterpiece, especially the first half, it was totally robbed.

Tried to watch The Shape of Water with the ladyfriend tonight - beautiful film, but we fell asleep three times and had to restart it each time...

Michael Shannon is still my favourite 'mid-ranger' at the minute; he's reminds me of Christopher Walken. Has anyone seen him in a bad role yet?

He plays a lot of similar roles though. He basically reprises his Nelson van Alden here in this film.

It's terrific for four seasons and then ends horribly. All the more horrible because Terrence Winter abandoned the series to make Vinyl, which was a huge flop.

https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/01/annihilation-paramount-netflix/551810/

This is an interesting article about the state of affairs in the industry right now.

Essentially Paramount sold the international rights to Alex Garland's (director of the excellent Ex Machina) Annihilation to Netflix because the CEO thinks it might be too "intellectual" to be theatrical. That's a damn shame, because major studios wetting themselves because exciting young directors like Garland might fail, portends terrible things for the survival of movies on the big screen. It's a $50m, which is no Blair Witch Project, but is hardly a massive budget, either. You'd have to wonder what the heck made them green light it in the first place, if they weren't prepared to adequately back it with a proper release. It seems inevitable that having already soiled themselves and sold off the movie before it's screened anywhere, Paramount has affected a self-fulfilling prophecy for the film's financial failure.

The last 3 films I’ve watched have been In Bruges, La La Land and Good Time.

In Bruges is decent and Bruges itself looks a lovely city.

La La Land is a masterpiece.

Good Time is absolutely crazy and Robert Pattinson was excellent.

If it is faithful to the books it's based on, then Annihilation is definitely going to be a niche movie. I loved the book, but it doesn't play by Hollywood rules at all. Could see it becoming a cult hit, but it was never going to be a blockbuster at cinemas. I can imagine the studio execs watching it and shitting one because it deliberately avoids ticking all of their favourite boxes.

Borne, also by Jeff Vandermeer, has a lot more cinematic potential.
