Find it a bit strange you're castigating Can when he roughly doubled Wijnaldum's whopping total of 34 touches the other night. And that's with 15-20 fewer minutes.
I know you're talking about "work rate" but is it possible that your eyes are playing tricks on you? Because if a midfielder is having double the touches of someone in essentially the same position as them then surely there's a good chance he's working harder off the ball to receive it than his team-mate.
As I said, it's over the last five or so games that he's been atrocious. I don't think touches in itself helps draw conclusions, especially just for one game. It could be that Can was dropping deep to receive the ball as he was getting bored of being further forwards/not touching it for a minute, and neglecting the positions he's supposed to be taking up. It might be that whoever was on Gini's side was playing too conservatively, or was bypassing him to hit Firmino early.
Also is that unique touches? I'm sure it's just times he was in possession, rather than each actual touch. But if it's each actual touch, you could argue it shows how terribly slow in possession Can has been lately, taking five touches when two would do.
Also I'm not necessarily only considering work rate, but also what it is he's trying to do. Seems perfectly motivated to make the effort to support an attack, less so to track a runner, mark a zone or trying to keep discipline. I think he's been so poor for so many games now, it doesn't matter to me how Gini compared in one of them.
