The difference is that guns are designed to kill things, pistols are primarily designed to kill people why the need to have one in the house in the first place?
I shoot, my guns are kept in the gun safe and only come out when I go hunting/to the range.

And that's exactly how it should be, that's the rules in the UK - you lose your Firearms certificate and therefore your guns, if they are out of the safe for anything other than cleaning, direct travel to/from the range or going to a gun shop. We were in Orlando recently and the news carried a special report on why where workers getting so angry they were going in to work and shooting co-workers? Two days on the run the news reported that overnight staff in McNasty's were shot by customers, one in an argument over a refund. The country is fucked up.

It's really scary how normalised it has become as well. I'm not American and haven't ever visited but I imagine people barely bat an eyelid when there are news reports of people being gunned down now. I would say it's not high priority news either unless there are significant numbers of people shot and killed. There's basically daily domestic terror attacks going by those figures but they aren't labelled as such because there's no unifying cohesive ideology that motivates the perpetrators. There is one constant however - weapons procured as the result of ridiculous gun control laws being used to maim and murder on a daily basis.

Going by the report above which was posted on 5th July, there had been 1800 people shot so far this year in Chicago alone. That's nearly 13 people a day. In 1 City.

Ive been here 21 years.

This single picture sums up guns and normal in the States.

This is a school where the kids went back two days ago. Every one is this picture has the best intention and everyone is smiling.

The first people the kids meet when they go to back to the local middle school are head teachers and armed law enforcement.

This is as normal as it can be.

Its totally innocent. Its the kids first day back at school.

My point is that no one gives a fuck that there is a cop (with a gun) welcoming kids at a school

i feel like I am the only one here that feels its not normal to have armed police in a school for 11-14 year olds or any other school for that matter

If it was in the UK then I would see no problem with it, be it a postie, fireman or a copper.

But I do understand your point as it's not in the UK but the US, which maybe takes on a different tone.

Really? As far as I can see an armed policeman greeting kids on their first day of school on the basis of reassurance of their protest would be unthinkable in the UK.

Baltimore has just tried to go one weekend (72 hours) without a murder - it failed as there was a shooting within 40 hours and then another one. The city is on course for 400 murders this year, expected to be more than Chicago.

A firearms expert on MSNBC said it sounded like fully automatic fire not semi-automatic and that the shooter was discharging 30 round magazine, reloading another two magazines, then what sounded like semi-automatic fire.
