I know it makes for uncomfortable reading, so many of the victims didn't report anything as they knew they wouldn't be believed anyway, heartbreaking. All these years they've been forced to live with it, while he went on as if nothing had happened. Disgusting.

This continues to ring in my mind:

Quote
He was also charged with having sex with an underage girl, Alison Brown, around 20 years earlier, when she was 14 years old. She had had a relationship with Glitter for some years.[17] Glitter was acquitted of this charge. It was later revealed that Brown had sold her story to the News of the World and stood to earn more money from the newspaper should Glitter be convicted.[38]

That happened back in 1999.  Was she telling the truth?  If she hadn't been daft enough to sell her story before a conviction had been secured could the man have been nailed right then and there?  More importantly I bet him and Saville were best buddies back in the 70s and probably had some wild "parties" together.  If this one little instance had clicked 16 years ago we could have, perhaps, brought that cigar sucking bastard down whilst he was still alive.

Ah well, hindsight is a wonderful thing...  :-\

Exactly. How many still haven't came forward? How many have died in circumstances like you say? How many have been so traumatized by their experiences have turned to drink, drugs, crime because they couldn't cope or express their feelings? The numbers are numbers, they are shocking. But it goes deeper than that. How many families are affected as a wider consequence, parents who feel responsible, siblings who feel helpless? You are genuinely talking about thousands upon thousands of people being affected by these people.

Who knows why? Perhaps the nurse had reported previous complaints and was warned not to. You wonder how much higher up the chain it goes and how much of a blind eye was turned. Same with that unanswered letter to his secretary - again, she must have seen plenty of similar letters you'd assume.

The real strange thing I find is why not one nurse or secretary came out and exposed what was going on?

Fear I imagine. Seems like the dirty scumbag had total control over everyone and everywhere he went and a nurse coming out and saying something like could've cost them their career and potentially brought them a lot of trouble elsewhere in their lives from media etc. It's a sad state of affairs but it's probably true.

Probably true. But you would've thought one person would've gone to the media to expose him.

Have you not ever been in a situation where it was plain that everybody was waiting for somebody else to make the first move?  Fear is a powerful motivator to do nothing.  Fear or losing your job, fear of being stitched up, being accused yourself, losing your own family.

These people are also victims, carrying an immense burden of guilt and shame; doubtless many wanting to act at the time but for various reasons compelled to keep silent.  How many I wonder went home and tearfully hugged their own children, and said "nothing" when their kids asked them why they were crying?

Fred Talbot gets 5 years.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-31874576

Quote
Fred Talbot: Ex-weatherman jailed for schoolboy abuse

Ex-TV weatherman Fred Talbot has been jailed for five years for sex attacks on two boys while he was a teacher.

Talbot, 65, was convicted in February of indecent assaults on two pupils from Altrincham Grammar School.

He was cleared of eight other charges of indecent assault, after a three-week trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Police said the crimes, said to have taken place on trips in 1975 and 1976, "destroyed" his victims' childhood.

Talbot, of Bowdon, Greater Manchester, denied abusing boys aged 14 to 17, but was found guilty of two counts relating to assaults carried out on canal boat trips when the boys were about 14.

He was sentenced to two and a half years for each offence to run consecutively and was told he must serve half of his sentence before being considered for release on licence.

'Abuse of trust'
He is best known for presenting the weather on ITV's This Morning programme from a floating map at Liverpool's Albert Dock.

But before his media stint, the Edinburgh-born presenter worked as a biology teacher at the boys' school until May 1984.

During the trial, the jury heard his teaching career came to "an abrupt end" after he made an indecent proposal to two pupils he had invited to his home to look at his telescope.

As he passed sentence, judge Timothy Mort told Talbot his jail term would start immediately bearing in mind his "abuse of trust".

He said Talbot had "deliberately and indecently assaulted the two of them for your own gratification".

Addressing Talbot, he said the 65-year-old had taken pupils on as many as 38 trips and the offences he was convicted of were not isolated incidents.

"You had, on other occasions, abused your position to offend.

"You calculated the boys would be too confused, guilt-ridden or embarrassed to disclose what happened."

The judge added that both victims had been affected by the abuse by Talbot, with one suffering from mental health issues since the incident.

He also said one of the victims made repeated complaints about Talbot to police before he was charged.

After sentencing, Det Ch Insp Graham Brock said Talbot had "plied boys with drink and orchestrated situations to be alone with his victims, in order to indecently assault them to feed his own sexual desires".

"You can imagine the excitement of a teenage boy setting off on a canal trip with friends and a teacher, who he should expect to look after him, only to return with his childhood destroyed," he said.

"Put simply, these offences reflect an abhorrent abuse of trust by a man proven to have no regard for the innocence of youth he was employed to nurture."

Further allegations
Suzanne Goddard QC, defending, said there was little that could be said in mitigation.

She said Talbot had lost a stone in weight during his time in custody but was "accustoming himself" to life in jail.

"He knows he must now receive a custodial sentence. He has come to terms with that," she said.

Following his trial, it was revealed Talbot was also questioned by Greater Manchester Police about an alleged serious sexual assault on a former pupil, but the investigation was shelved after the complainant died.

A number of similar complaints against Talbot have been passed by police to the Procurator Fiscal Office in Scotland.

The police investigation was triggered in December 2012, following publicity into a separate historical abuse inquiry at another Altrincham school, St Ambrose College, which led to a nine-year jail term for ex-teacher Reverend Alan Morris.

I can only hope that others now have the courage to come forward.  He is so sodding lucky to only be convicted of two counts so far, but even the Judge said they're not isolated incidents.  Five years is nothing so I hope he gets hauled back into court again and again to face further charges.

Saw him deliver a lecture to the Liverpool Astronomical Society once, when I was 15, talking about his love of astronomy.  Chills my blood that I was so close.  Makes me wonder if I might have ended up a victim.

One thing to take from that story is that he committed the offences when he was a teacher. And that while the celebrity paedophile stories are more interesting, the vast majority of child sexual abuse is carried out by family members, family friends or adults that the child knows and trusts like teachers, priests and scout masters.

Aye. I went to school with this horrible beast who's been in the Echo recently:

Quote
The mum of a vulnerable teenager who was preyed upon by a scout leader today told how she felt “devastated” at not spotting his sick intentions.
Gavin Owen, 38, was jailed for four and a half years today after abusing two teenage boys and being found with a grim haul of child porn.
He had volunteered at a Crosby scout group for more than a decade and worked in schools with disadvantaged youngsters.

Cliff Richard suing the BBC for reporting that his house was being searched by police investigating a child sex allegation.

If he wins, it sets a massively dangerous precedent and threatens the future of news reporting.

Not really.

The police tipped the press off which is a f*cking disgrace.  It's not surprising as they tend to work quite closely with them.

Yeah I can kind of side with him of this.

Innocent until proven guilty, yet by doing what they did he was instantly judged by the mass media and his name was in tatters and the stigma, despite them finding nothing, will last with him for the rest of his life.

So is the issue that the BBC were there to record the raid?

Or that they reported the allegation and property search?

I don't think people are thinking through the potential ramifications for the reporting of news.

Do we want to live in a society where the media is afraid to report the police investigating the activities of the rich & famous for fear of being sued?

The police applied for and were granted a warrant by a judge so there must have been reasonable grounds for the search. The CPS made the subsequent decision that there was insufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

There has been wholesale condemnation about how the allegations of claimed victims have not previously been taken seriously. Experts in the field of preventing child abuse have explained time and again that the publicising of the other Operation Yewtree arrests have encouraged other victims & witnesses to come forward, as they had previously believed they'd been the only victims/would not be taken seriously/etc. One of the psychological weapons an abuser uses to intimidate a victim is to say nobody will believe them, that they have no evidence.

You're posts are a good example of how the ignorant masses think and how they would treat an innocent man.  Cliff Richard is innocent, never been charged, let alone convicted of any offence!  I don't believe he was even arrested.

You are posting a story about him (an innocent man) in a thread about two convicted sex offenders, says it all really.  People just group any person convicted or not together, which is wrong.

the only ramification would be that if the police tipped off the press over a big arrest they can’t come down with their cameras to make a story of it, nothing wrong with that and hopefully it extends to the tabloids

Cliff Richards was never arrested or charged with anything. Though now his name will forever be linked to a raid on his house and the investigation.

No one is suggesting the media shouldn’t report when a celebrity or anyone else has been charged and found guilty.

Let’s not kid ourselves and think the media does this to encourage victims of abuse to come forward.

Of course they don't it for that - but it's a beneficial side-effect.

Anyway, multi-millionaire Richard asking for £600k from the BCC.

A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Well, that's more than a little loaded.* Did the BBC behave reprehensibly? Is there a legitimate case to answer? Since this is a civil matter, the usual solution is financial compensation. If this is about righting a wrong, Richard's wealth is irrelevant.

I don't know enough about the case (I live in the US) to express a meaningful opinion about it veracity. But if Richard was wronged by the BBC, then a very public a lawsuit is probably the best way for him to (partially) reverse the damage done to him.

*When Caroline Aherne** did it (to Debbie Mcgee), it was funny.

** Damn it. I just Googled Aherne to check the spelling of her surname - I did not know that she had died. I am so out of the loop with so much day to day news from the UK.

It depends whether you believe the BBC were in their rights to report that the police were raiding his house in response to allegations of child sex abuse that had been made.

The BBC probably went a bit ott on the coverage (they had a helicopter providing News24 with live footage) and that, I understand, is his beef.

He's already had a settlement from South Yorks police after one of their officers tipped off the BBC in advance. And, whilst I have little sympathy for SYP for obvious reasons and think tipping off journalists is wrong, he's already pocketed a chunk of taxpayer cash.

But my point was that, really, his wealth is irrelevant if he is wishing to right-a-wrong / repair his reputation. Your mentioning his wealth strongly implied that he is being greedy. I am suggesting (irrespective of the merits of the case), restoring his reputation is probably the stronger motivating factor. The fact that the amount he is claiming is chicken feed compared to his wealth only strengthens my argument. Or, do you think merely by virtue of his wealth that he should not (be able to) file such a suit?
