Spaced
The League of Gentlemen
I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.

Black Books, Spaced.

Yes, Black Books is ace. Spaced passed me by first time around, it's being repeated now on More4 I think, been catching up with it, that's class too. Big Train's not been mentioned has it? Get on that too.

I just watched Episodes which was on bbc2 it was ok but based in the US
The Royle Family
Max and Paddy  - if you liked Phoenix Nights this is a spin off
Have seen Max & Paddy, just forgot to mention it. The episode where they took the traffic camera down was fantastic.

Downloaded and watched one episode of Inbetweeners and I'm Alan Partridge. Both seemed good but especially Partridge was funny.

Some mentioned Brass Eye. I saw one or two episodes few years back and it was funny but as I'm not English or living in England anymore, I can't possibly know all the jokes.

Black adder is also something I tried for an episode or two few years back and wasn't that excited. Got to have another go though.

Bottom has been getting so many votes that I'll need to have a go with that as well.

Once again, thanks all!

WTF? How you can appreciate the young ones and not bottom is beyond me!

Do not take this as a personal attack but both series were built on the same philosophy and from a very similar comedic direction. I'm not disputing that you did not find bottom funny, just that I struggle to find a major difference between the young ones and bottom. The only major difference I can tell is that there is more toilet humour in bottom than the young ones. However, toilet humour is a major component in the young ones also.

Again, I'm not knocking your tastes. Just questioning where your tastes differ between the two series  :)

I don't mind if it's a personal attack. Help yourself ;D

Bottom is utter one trick pony derivative dogshit. The Young Ones was fresh and new and anarchic and offered something different. The New Statesman was brilliant. Loads of The Comic Strip one-offs were genius. But Bottom is dogshit. They're taking the piss and driving off with lorryloads of dogshit-stained cash. Just my opinion mind. But yeah - dogshit.

I'm with you on this Roy. I loved the Young Ones but found Bottom ( and that Catflap one) pretty much unwatchable.

Some of My favourite comedies over the last  40 years are

The Two Ronnies
Flying circus
Faulty Towers
Porridge
Rise and Fall of Reggie Perrin
The Young ones
Al fresco
Aufweidersehn Pet
A little bit of fry and laurie
Black Adder
the new statesmen
Big night out
Smell of reeves and Mortimer
Brass eye
Fist of Fun
Knowing me knowing you
The day today
Father Ted
The league of gentlemen
I'm Alan Partridge
Spaced
The office
The thick of it

Big train had a few laughs too and in it's day, and at it's best, Spitting Image had a lot of laughs too.
I also recall Whoops Apocalypse, I remember loving it at the time, but i can't remember it very well now so don't know if it stood the test of time.

;D

We had a house full of Mayall and Edmondson appreciators in our 4th year at Uni. Can't tell you how many times that was on.

What was the "Rick Mayall Presents" one he did with Helena Bonham Carter again? He's had a few brilliant moments has our Rick. He's brilliant in the kiddies TV cartoon "King Arthur" at the moment aswell - it's class - him and Matt Lucas.

But Bottom. Last night on that Comic Relief show sums Bottom up for me. Dogshit.

The Office, Peep Show, I'm Alan Partridge are the only three that I class as genuinely brilliant from British comedy over the last decade or so.

Extras was good but not brilliant IMO.

American comedy has the edge at the moment.

The greatest comedy series the UK has ever produced is 'The Office'. FACT.

Nope.

Fawlty Towers is by a mile.

And I'll take old re-runs of Dad's Army on BBC2 over most of recent British 'comedies'.

Allo allo is shite. Watch one episode and you've seen every joke.

Allo Allo was classic.

By your analogy then watch one Laurel and Hardy and you've seen every joke.

It's not the 'jokes' per se, it's the getting to the jokes.

Family Guy, Curb and Seinfeld are all fantastic to name a few while The Simpsons continues to remain a class above of most British dross on these days like that woeful 'Friday Night Dinner' and shit like Shameless.

There have been great British comedies in the past but the standard is slipping a little. Peep Show is the only remaining great series.

I'm more inclined towards American comedies myself, but of the ones you mention Family Guy is awful, Seinfeld finished about 15 years ago while The Simpsons hasnt been funny for about 10. Curb is the only current one that's up there right now (unless Im missing something obvious). While Britain does have The Inbetweeners and Peep Show.

If you want a brilliant British comedy try The Thick of It. But judging from your list it might not be to your taste. Give a go though.
