Hell of a turnaround, they'd clearly been briefing Arteta as their choice. Maybe he goes there anyway with Emery?

"The Independent understands that there have also been snags over the kind of say Arteta would have in issues beyond immediate control of the first team."

Emery of course, very much works with a sproting director. So likely happy to come in as head coach without wanting futher control.

Worth noting that in 2015-16, his final season at Sevilla, he didn't register one single away win all season.

Would fit right in at Arsenal.

Jokes aside, he was not bad at either Valencia or Sevilla but it shows that their ambitions are getting 4th at best and a deep run in the EL than competing for league titles. For me, he is in the same bracket as Blanc.

Why did they continously end up in the EL?

A perfect post  :D

Much more solid choice than Arteta. Won't be as many 'challenging' characters in the dressing room as at PSG, which was his downfall there. Probably the best choice they could make, or at least reasonably hope to get in their current position.

"The Independent understands that there have also been snags over the kind of say Arteta would have in issues beyond immediate control of the first team."

I always thought one of the issues was City's reluctance to let him leave. Although the fact Cazorla has now left pretty much confirms Arteta won't be getting the job. I always thought Emery would do well in a PL job. I'd expect them to be far more tactically conservative than under Wenger

Arsenal won stuff under Wenger in the last 5 years. Winning three EL's in a row won't do much to help Arsenal.

It's their league performance that needs improving. He under performs in that regard very often.

5th a couple of times. 7th one season. Not great, but it was never going to be easy for a club like Sevilla against Barca and Real and the emergence of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

I stand by what I said, any manager that wins 3 European Cup competitions in a row isn't awful.

Good appointment with Emery.
They could have done a lot worse. Atleast they have a very good chance of winning the Europa League next year.
Silly decision to go to PSG as I don’t think he is elite enough to win the CL which is the prerequisite for a successful manager in Paris.

Can see them getting the new manager bounce at the start of the season but the squad is still in need of an overhaul.

Emery's league record last five years:

Sevilla 13/14: 5th (7 points behind Bilbao for 4th spot)
Sevilla 14/15: 5th (3 points behind Valencia for 4th spot)
Sevilla 15/16: 5th (12 points behind Villarreal for 4th spot)
PSG 16/17: 2nd (8 points behind Monaco for 1st spot)
PSG 17/18: 1st

So that's 4 out of 5 seasons when he's performed below par. Not a good appointment at all. His EL record puts a lot of gloss on what's he has achieved as a manager.

Good addition to the PL though. His touchline antics will be a good laugh.

Shows exactly where Arsenal want to be. I can’t see Emery coming into this league and pulling up trees, but he will nicely keep them between 4th and 6th and won’t moan about not having a say in transfers.

His league record leaves a lot to be desired... I can’t see him adapting well to the tough away trips against the likes of Burnley.

I think Wenger's the last 'long term' manager we'll see now. If Emery can come in, win a couple of trophies, get them back into the Champions League, that'll be a successful spell for them. Tough job though, Man City aren't going anywhere, Man Utd and Chelsea are dull but have the finances to compete at the top end and Tottenham and us are now consistently finishing above them.

It'll be interesting how patient their fans are with him, a lot of them having had Wenger as manager as long as they can remember and wanting him out for around half that time. Still, it's not like Moyes replacing Ferguson, Emery at least has a track record of winning things.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Uninspired to say the least. Never rated him at all.

Maybe I’m being harsh but his League form isn’t all that, and you’d think Arsenal would want somebody to push them domestically.

Just my gut instinct of course, he may very well prove himself.
