Grief. You're right. Singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Gladys Knight, and Billie Holliday were just wasting their time. Especially in comparison to Andrea Bocelli.

And Pavarotti was over-rated, actually. A triumph of marketing over content.

Some chick singers who aren't too shabby:

Lee Ann Womack
Natalie Maines
Neko Case
Jenny Lewis
Tift Merritt
Harriet Wheeler
Liz Fraser
Sinead O'Connor

Great choices as always

Add to that some personal (odd at times) favourites

Natalie Merchant
Anita Baker
Angelique Kidjo
Annie Lennox
Cesaria Evora
and the recently seen Mayra Andrade (another Cape Verdian)
Erykah Badu
India Arie

and the one and only

Billy McKenzie
Never give up

All my favourite 'proper' singers are soulsters.

Marvellous Marvin (as he's referred to in my house)
Otis Redding
Smokey Robinson
Stevie Wonder
Aretha Franklin

I could go on but I'm sure people get the idea...

Then there's the frontmen/women who can't sing but you love em just the same by sheer force of personality. Or their ability to write songs that move you; many have been mentioned already, I won't go on.

You don't need to be able to sing well to be a good singer. It is about more than putting your vocal chords about. Johnny Cash could barely hold a note, but is one of the greatest ever singers by virtue of the humanity in his voice.

As Stevie Wonder so rightly said: "Just because a record's in the groove don't make it in the groove." Something else does.

Joss Stone - a wonderful voice, but a very poor singer. She doesn't know what to do with her voice. Amy Winehouse on the other hand.....

I actually think Christina Aguilera has a really good voice.  Don't worry, I'm leaving anyway.
She keeps getting texts off him saying "Oh please take me back, I love you and I'm still not over you". We read them together naked and then we laugh about it. Then she blows me off.

Paul Simon has possibly the best phrasing of any singer.. his timing is immaculate.   The two of them are sublime.

Aretha Franklin.  Close the thread.  Now Pavarotti's dead, she's got zero competition for the title of world's greatest living singer.

Quite agree. Have you heard that early gospel album - can't think what it's called now.

This is a quite remarkable vocal performance. The boy Stipes is out there in the cold, one piano and a small bit of backing, and I believe he isn't well, but the strength of his voice, the way it conveys his passion and weariness all at the same time..well, stop me if I'm wrong.

Sorry to be biased but it's Lowell George for me, such depth, such emotion and truly exceptional phrasing, no vocal histrionics just a fantastic singer who never comes across as insincere or fake.

Other notable warblers:

Tim and Jeff Buckley
Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder
Gram Parsons
Emmylou Harris
Richard Manuel
Paul Rodgers
The Staples
The Wilson Brothers
Joni Mitchell
Scott Walker
John Fogerty
Nick Drake
Aretha Franklin
Billie Holliday
Martha Reeves
Russell Mael.....
.......and not forgetting of course everybody's favorite pub singer Bob Dylan the man with the greatest phrasing in the history of popular music.

Stipe's really rather underrated, i get the feeling if R.E.M weren't so damn huge he'd be much more appreciated, same goes for Peter Buck, a really good, tasteful guitarist who always seems to play the right thing for the song (as opposed to his ego) and yet is more often overlooked when it comes to naming great guitarists.
