Gentlemanly agreement not to pick Maradona? Is he the only that comes as a cheesy pick?

Yeah that could work.

Not sure who else would have that much impact.

The other way round it is that you have to pick a year for each player you choose. So you could have 1998 Michael Owen for example and we can even put that in the formations so people know how to judge the player.

I’d see how the match goes tomorrow but hopefully Monday because we’ll all be too busy celebrating to give it much thought tomorrow.

Good point. Although if things go according to plan tomorrow, I'd be happy to have my first pick as Alfons Groenendijk in honour of the Sky Blue Plastics.

I thought we should start Monday, so we aren’t running side by side with the other 2 drafts, but the wrestling one looks delayed before its really got going. A lot of people will be out tomorrow for the football, so might as well stick to Monday morning

Also need to finalise what rule set everyone wants. I’m not actually competing so would rather you all come to some kind of agreement.

If you read up a bit we all agreed that we're going to inverse the draft order, Maradona is available, and we're going to judge it based on careers not just the 90s.
Maybe the group, led by your leadership, will see these drafts as PR functions and brilliant use of humor

Hey Claus, fuck off.

I've offered Xabiart my place . I've scanned other draft threads and to be honest need more time to learn in order to offer any sort of competition.
If he doesn't respond by the time you start I'll give it a go.

There’s not a lot to learn. You can never please everyone so just pick the favourite players you can and bollocks to what people think.

Agreed - trying to please the masses just shifts you within an ever moving blob of opinion - as BD suggests, pick who you like - and let the chips fall where they may.

Playing to win is nice, but only out of 16 does - so that means its about the process, the people and your own imagination.

Good luck, feel free to PM if you have questions --- my fifth or sixth drafts with these guys and I've barely sniffed the second round.

One rule, do not pick a GK anywhere near the top 8 picks is my guess --- I picked Yashin in the 3 or 4th round of my first draft (as I am an ex-GK coach) and got pelted for it (then again there are some Neuer picks that are more cosmopolitan).

Also, allow me to say that being sandwiched between  Fucking Appalled and Sheer Magnetism is a recipe for this:

The 6th Overall pick is not what it seems with these two lurking, judging, cracking off clogged nostril picks and flinging them without care.

Robbie welcome to the Savannah - grab your jumblies mate :)

Deep respect given to snap, crackle and pop of drafting (I included BD Nick in this too - he's the final post pop reminding me that none of the players I wanted are gonna be available) :) :)

Just do what I do, think of a player and pick them. Sort a formation out after about the 7th pick. Lose in round one and never talk about it again.

Think we can settle on the 150 games in the 90s, including both the 1989/90 and 1999/00 full seasons. That puts Maradona at 148 games according to wiki, and even if someone finds a sneak, we can agree he is ruled out? I don't mind including him, there are always going to be top players who skew a side but that is kind of the whole point, it isn't like Maradona always guarantees a win.

Good to go?

Wanted to go for a defender or midfielder, had Maldini all lined up, but realistically, van Basten was the next pick.

Was leaning towards picking someone else as I've had van Basten in a draft before, but he is simply too good to overlook.

Some quality players were lined up after but, none as good as Marco.

Probably the greatest pure No. 9 there has ever been. I'm torn between him and two more strikers at that level and that's about it, I guess.

What year did Van Basten pick up that really bad injury? Are we discounting his 80s performances? ;)

I did think people may hold this against him, but that injury was in 1993. He'd had three amazing seasons in the 90s before that winning leagues, European Cups and even a Ballon d'or in 1992.

Take Marco van Basten at his peak even just in the 90s and he is a top 10 player ever.

Imagine having the second pick and getting Ronaldo. Should have been nailed on no.1 pick for this. Poetryinmotion nailed on winner for me.
