City Breaks recommendations.
« on: June 9, 2019, 04:33:17 pm »
Looked for a thread and I know Cities get threads so can we use this thread for City Break Ideas?

So as it says on the tin. Myself and herself off too Amsterdam in October but looking for ideas for the future, I'm told by many Lisbon is really nice. Have done the London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Verona, Lake Garda, Geneva thing so....

Now. We might do a quick long weeken break with the kids in August in Europe and looking for something different with our three daughters, 11, 12 and 16 year olds.

Savilla looks beautiful as does Dubrovnic.

Any ideas really helps  :wave

Saville is on our radar 100% but flights look to be a problem from Dublin. We have been to Valencia.

Anyone been to Lisbon or Dubrovnic?

I quite enjoyed Lisbon, though it rained most of the time we were there - I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it more if the weather had been good.

Went to Vienna and Bratislava earlier this year - loved Bratislava, it was a great city. I can also recommend Krakow, possibly one of the best cities I've visited. And Split, in Croatia, is worth a visit too.

If you think Vienna is expensive best forget about Dubrovnik.
It's shamelessly exploiting every opportunity to grab money from tourists.
Also, aside from the city walls and old town - it really doesn't have much to offer.
Good jumping base to visit Korčula, peninsula of Pelješac, National Park Mljet and so on - but that would take time and planning.

Come to Tallinn!! It has the best preserved medieval old town in Europe. It's a bit pricey for the old booze but the quality of food and drink here is great.

I also work part time for a street theatre group called 'Tales of Reval' (the old name for the city) and we do free, immersive, guided tours of the lower Old Town. You might even get to see me in medieval costume ;D

Budapest is another quality city that hasn't already been mentioned. Pretty cheap (as far as I remember), with loads of beautiful architecture and interesting history, plus a really good bar scene with some proper hidden gems. The spa's are really nice too.

I haven't unfortunately. That's one I've still got to tick off my list. Me and my mates did a great road trip years ago, chipped in for a van and went to a lot of the big cities around that area (Berlin, Wroclaw, Bratislava, Budapest and Munich). Also ended up in Innsbruck but only stayed for a day because it turned out to be really expensive. We decided against Prague though because it was July and we heard it'd be rammed.

Riga in Latvia is worth a visit, so too Jurmala (20 mins by train from Riga).
