La Liga 17/18

El Classico matches to be played on Matchday 17 & Matchday 36

Barca have alot of young players who could be there for another good 5 years or more. On top of that Pique, Suarez, Messi, Busquets and Jordi Alba all have plenty more gas left in the tank. It's only really Iniesta and Mascherano who are both 33 who they should be looking to immediately replace and more than likely Neymar (Dybala, Hazard, Couti..)

I think Barcelona's problems are really over exaggerated, maybe it's because they are competing with such an incredible side in Real Madrid that people have such a skewered perception of how good Barca are. Winning is winning afterall but it is worth remembering Barca only finished 3 points behind this great Real side.. Barcelona also scored 116(!) league goals.. that is 10 more than Real Madrid managed, Barcelona also conceeded four less goals than the champions (37 + 41).

You could attribute Barcelona's ultimate la liga 'downfall' to the very start of the season, losing 1-2 at home to newly promoted Alaves at the time was perceived to be a disaster of epic proportions but Alaves did go onto finish 9th and reach the copa del rey final, two weeks later they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Atleti then at the start of October losing 4-3 away to Celta.

Meaning they were playing constant catch up, this put pressure on everyone from the players to the manager. 3 successive draws to Malaga, Sociedad and Real Madrid in October made it seem all but impossible for them to achieve any league success. But there were some real positives and fighting spirit shown, famously overturning the 4-0 deficit vs PSG and then going to the Bernabeu and reigniting their league campaign after being 1-0 down with a last minute Messi winner.. for me shown they still have almighty quality and self belief.

After the Classico comeback Real Madrid went on a 6 game winning spree until the end of the season to cement the league, in the first Classico of the season in early December Sergio Ramos scored a stoppage time equaliser.. probably the most important goal of their league season in retrospect.

To summarise my ramblings, Barcelona did win a domestic competition after all, they did produce some breathtaking performances against some of Europes top sides (Real Madrid, Atletico, PSG), they did show grit and determination of a side who believes in themselves and they do have a nucleus of young players mixed with seasoned pro's who could well prosper under a new manager with fresh ideas. I fancy them to give Zizou's Real a good run for their money, Messi will be eager to take back his mantle of the world best player by holding the most Ballon dors.

New signings:
Though I should comment on Real's 4 acquisitions, all U21 internationals.. Theo Hernandez, Marcos Llorente,  Ceballos and Vallejo. In my opinion very clever signings by Zidane, all very talented and capable of making an impression in the first team immediately but also very happy to be part of the set up of Spain and Europe's biggest club.. Last season you got the impression Morata and James were unhappy playing second fiddle to Benzema and Isco, I feel these moves will really eliminate that problem.

Also looking forward to seeing how Luis Muriel + Nolito do at Sevilla, Vitolo at Atleti, Enes Unal the young lad from Man City should partner Bakambu up top for Villarreal, Diego Llorente and Januzaj have joined Real Sociedad, Diego Lopez has made his move to Espanyol permanent after arguably the finest season of his career to date last time out. Betis seem to have made a few astute moves in Andres Guardado from PSV and Camarasa, will be interesting to see how Tello does there also now he is back in La Liga having played for Barca, Porto and Fiorentina it is really time he proves himself as a starter in a team. Former Liverpool man Dani Pacheco has joined Getafe on a permament deal after helping them get promoted last season, will be nice to see how he gets on.

One massive downgrade in my opinion is from Valencia who have replaced the incredible Diego Alves with the imo sub-standard Neto from Juventus.

Newly promoted teams: Levante, Girona and Getafe.
New managers: José Ángel Ziganda joins Bilbao, Valverde to Barca, Manolo Márquez is promoted from Las Palmas B to first team coach, Marcelino leaves Villarreal to join Valencia,  Quique Setién the old Las Palmas manager joins Real Betis, Juan Carlos Unzué joins Celta Vigo, departing Celta is Eduardo Berizzo who takes over Sevilla and finally one Argentine replaces another as Luis Zubeldía takes over the reigns at Alaves after Pellegrino impressed massively and earned a move to Southampton.

Incase anyone was wondering.. Juan Carlos Unzue was the 2nd hand man to Luis Enrique at Barca and left with him, taking up a very nice job at Celta imo. Who I should also mention was the assistant coach to Enrique at Celta.

Good luck to Unzue and Luis Enrique. Very productive in terms of trophies for Barca, and their CL win was spectacular. Outplayed every team we met. Great times.

However, Barca needed some changes desperately. Excited to see what Valverde can do with Barca.

Strange move from Sevilla letting Mariano leave, I always considered him one of their more important players. Vitolo has left for Atleti and Iborra to Leicester, Konoplyanka joins Schalke and Adil Rami has gone to Marseille.

They've replaced 31 year old Mariano with 26 year old Sebastien Corchia, Luis Muriel, Nolito and Banega have come in. Seem's like they are going to completely alter their playing style under new coach Berizzo. They are also being heavily linked with Jesus Navas, Simon Kjaer and Stevan Jovetic. Apparently Jesus Navas is the most likely deal with all parties keen on the deal, Fener's asking price is abit too high at the moment but they could well come to an agreement.

Sevilla have also signed Guido Pizarro from Mexican club Tigres, I've not seen the guy play but I read he is a defensive mid and has recently worked his way into the Argentina set up.

I imagine they will play a 4-3-3 formation something like; Banega Nzonzi Pizarro, Muriel Nolito Jovetic. Look's pretty tasty!

They could well make a pretty penny from selling Sergio Rico to PSG also, the 23 year old would probably command a fee in the range of £30m.

Usually they'll find some cheap replacements off the back of selling players who do quite well. Considering they aren't a minted team with a billionaire foreign owner the success they've had in the last 15 years with the UEFA cups and a few champions league qualifications has been impressive, even more so when they play in a tough league with a few elite teams and another category of very good teams.

I like the La Liga though, it's the best league around for me and probably has been since the turn of the decade. The likes of Sevilla, Villarreal, Bilbao and Sociedad make up for a really strong group of teams who'll all look to finish in a champions league/uefa cup place.

Even the likes of Eibar are a very good team to watch, think they finished 9th or 10th last season, they've done well since they survived relegation a couple of years ago when I think Elche took their place and went down instead. Alaves are another team who came up and finished mid-table and got to the cup final.

Think it'll be another exciting season in 17/18. My predictions are the usual suspects of Madrid, Barca and Atletico will make Champs league, and one of Villarreal or Sevilla to take the other place. I think it'll be Villarreal. Madrid to win league and Cup double, but miss out on another European cup.

Could anyone tell me a bit more about why the Bilbao v Sociedad, Deportivo v Celta, Valencia v Villareal and Sevilla v Betis are notable? I know why the notable matches involving big teams are notable as you learn that without really even meaning to due to exposure, but would love to hear about the rivalries of these smaller clubs.

Sevilla v Betis is one of the most notable derbies in Spanish football. Bilbao and Sociedad are both Basque clubs.

Interesting.. I feel like Sociedad's peak was 12/13 where Vela and Griezmann were awesome and clinched a CL spot for them. Illarramendi, Claudio Bravo, Xabi Prieto and the two I mentioned all probably had the best season's of their lives then (excluding Antoine)

They have some solid players in Llorente, Zurutuza, Martinez, Elustondo, Juanmi and especially youngster Oyarzabal who looks very good but I don't see the star players who will get them enough wins to make top 4.. top 8 would constitute a good season imo.

Llorente and Martinez should form a nice CB combo. Odriozola seems like a promising young RB, they have some useful CMs to keep them ticking over and they have a really good CF in Willian Jose. I think they're a bit short on the wings but their first XI should be plenty good enough to keep them moving in the right direction.

I could care less about him and the Swedish national team... it goes way back to Mostovoi, Karpin, FIFA 2003, FM10 and also the marvellous environment about Vigo as well as sky blue being my favourite colour all in a combination  ;D (just take a look at the way Vigo is set on Street View or Google it)...

When I was at holiday in Northern Portugal in 2005 as a kid I was so sad we never went to Vigo. It's like an elusive place that I have to visit one day.

I'd be delighted for them if they managed to win their first ever Copa del Rey at some point in the near few years.

Fair enough, I just started watching Spanish football when Karpin and Mostovoi were about but I leaned towards Depor.. they won the league and had the likes of Roy Makaay, Djalminha and Diego Tristan, very entertaining indeed!

Then I enjoyed Zaragoza 05/06 + 06/07 when they had Gabby and Diego Milito, D'Alessandro, Aimar, Zapater,Cani, Gerard Pique and the crazy Carlos Diogo. They were really competitive for a couple of seasons then strangely the signing of Roberto Ayala coincided with them getting relegated.

Had a soft spot for Villarreal 05/06 to 07/08 when they had Godin, Sorin, Forlan, Pires, Santi Cazorla, Marcos Senna, Capdevila, Nihat and the mighty Riquelme, they were very attacking and fun to watch.

As I mentioned above, Real Sociedad 12/13 + 13/14 were great for the neutral.. I've not really had a 'minor' (maybe wrong word) club I really looked forward to watching since them. Obviously Barca and Real Madrid always produce great performances.

Hopefully Sevilla will be one to watch this season.

Unstoppable now they have signed Januzaj!

On a serious note, Yuri Berchiche was a big loss but I guess Kevin Rodrigues will now step up. Igor Zubeldia and Jon Guridi have been promoted to the main squad too.

Like you, I like the look of their squad overall.

Who is going to score them 15+? I suppose Agirretxe is their go to man for goals and centreforward but he has never been prolific.

I miss the days of Valeron, Tamudo, Ivan de la Pena, Riquelme, those great number 10 players with an eye for a pass and a goal.. feel's like Xabi Prieto is the only one of them left in La Liga. edit; I guess Isco is!

Why 15 goals? You just need to score enough throughout the team.

They were fifth highest scorers in the league last term with Juanmi and Jose providing 23 of those, Vela nine and Prieto with eight, plus other players chipping in.

They have now promoted Jon Bautista who is going to be a great striker and is still only 22.

To be honest it's at the back where they need to sharpen up a little bit.

I suppose you are right. With you mentioning Bautista you reminded me of Leo Baptistao - I liked the look of him at Villarreal and he done pretty well for Espanyol last season. Piatti behind him and Caicedo could work really well next term.

Yes the entirety of the coastal stretch between Vigo and San Sebastián is something else. I'd much rather have that environment and climate than the dull beaches of Barcelona, Valencia and Costa del Sol myself  :)

Speaking of Celta, any predictions of how many Iago will score next season? I'll go for 12-13 in the league. He really seems to be a reliable poacher although not quite what I would call Aduriz-level.

Spain winger Jesus Navas has rejoined Sevilla on a free transfer after he was released by Manchester City.

Navas, 31, joined City from the La Liga side on a four-year deal worth £14.9m in June 2013.

He made 173 appearances for City, scoring eight goals, but played just 24 league games last season.

Navas' contract with City expired in the summer, leading him to return to Sevilla, where he began his career, on a four-year deal.

He was part of the Sevilla side that won the Uefa Cup in 2006 and 2007 but suffered from chronic homesickness, which led him to turn down a move to Chelsea in 2006.

Navas will break Sevilla's appearance record if he makes 27 more appearances for the club. He played 393 times in his first spell, with Juan Arza Inigo holding the record on 419.
I´ll say something that might surprise you. Real life is different to computer games.
I think Nadal is brilliant. One of the top 10 ever.

Just checked his record since. Since the beginning of the 2012/13 season, his last at Sevilla, he's scored 4 league goals. In 5 full seasons! Madness.

Atletico playing Napoli before our match later, be interesting to see if this is Simeone's last season. I like them but can't see them challenging for the title this year, and can't see them going the whole way in Europe.
