I'd be tempted to give it 6 months, see what problems they have at launch.  Same for the new Xbox.

New info on the rumoured PS4 have shed some light on potential hardware including a share button to distribute screens and footage online, a touchpad enabled controller and a EU launch date of early 2014.

New PS4 details, specs and launch date info

Sony have announced a mysterious ‘event’ centering on ‘the future of PlayStation’, the video is rumoured to tease a  PS4 reveal. The new info comes from Edge. Here are the key points:
•The controller has been redesigned and, while it will be the same size as a Dualshock, now features a control surface based on the Vita’s rear touchpad where the start and select buttons used to be.
•The PS4 will continually record the last 15 minutes of on-screen action and a new ‘Share’ button will enable the user to edit and distribute screens and videos online.
•The launch window will be Christmas for Japan and the US, followed by Europe in early 2014. Apparently this is due “complexities involved in European distribution”.
•There will be a new version of the PlayStation Eye.
•The hardware uses eight core 1.6GHz AMD CPUs built on AMD’s ‘R10XX’ architecture in the ‘Liverpool’ system-on-chip. The GDDR5 (essentially the RAM available to the graphics memory) “is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second” which should eliminate problems like Rimlag. Sony are also reported to be increasing the PS4′s RAM to 8GB from the initially reported 4.     Apparently the PS4 “gives developers more opportunities this time around, notably because the hardware is much more PC-like in its makeup”.

Much of this ties in with previous leaks describing the PS4 specifications. An earlier report pegged the console as having a 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” (equaling 8x cores), 8GB system memory, 2.2 GB of video memory and an AMD R10xx GPU for the main hardware. Also included were a Blu-ray drive, 160GB hard drive, HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channel audio outputs. That leak also spoke of a redesigned Dualshock mixing the “DualShock’s legendary face buttons, twin sticks and shoulder triggers with a ‘capacitive touch pad’ that could be similar to the one on the back of the PS Vita”.

It’s not the the first time people have compared PS4 to gaming PCs either with talk that the “PS4 will be mostly constructed from off-the-shelf PC components”. However, other rumours suggest PS4 will ditch the Dualshock altogether after, “numerous iterations, few of which resemble the DualShock, trying to emulate the same user interface philosophies as the PS Vita”. That report also mentions an LCD touchscreen.

Continuing the good news of increased power and more approachable development is the talk of the PS4 price with $350 the value being thrown around. That’s apparently the result of an analysts investigations following talks with sources at this year’s CES. That report also mentioned a PS4 announcement early in the year, along with this report that specifically mentions February for a PS4 reveal

All sounds good to me.

If it is $350 we'll be lucky if it goes for £300 over here! If it is £300 and is released with games that look worth a buy I'd be tempted on day one.

Even if it is announced, we're looking well into 2014 for release right? The Wii U was announced at E3 2011 and released 14 months later, surely developers will need even more time for the PS4. to be honest I don't really care when it's released, as long as they get the release right.

The GPU is equivlent to the 7970, as eurogamer suggest it will be interesting to see how it performs in a fixed console design.

Since that GPU is around £300 I doubt it very much.  GPU will probably be equivalent to a 6670 or something.

Since there are no laptops under a grand with that GPU, expect the Ps4 to cost around £700 if they did decide to use it.

Will most likely be a CPU/GPU combo chip like the AMD APUs.

This is what Eurogamer wrote about the 7970m in a review in may 2012

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-radeon-7970m-alienware-m17x-r4-review

"But times have moved on from 2005 - Microsoft won't need to invest so much in gaining market share next time around, while Sony simply can't afford to lose hundreds of dollars per unit as it did with PlayStation 3 back in the day. While a Pitcairn core is viable for a next-gen console, the fact remains that it's an expensive, high-end piece of kit and there's no guarantee that the raw power of this remarkable GPU will end up in the new console designs. But if it were, we can reasonably expect next-gen games to outperform what we have shown in this article - the advantages of a fixed architecture in a console mean that developers target the specific strengths of the GPU, inevitably producing results that punch above their weight compared to the same hardware running on PC."

Now it's been widely predicted the PS3 has this GPU 9 months or so after this article was printed.

Developers have had kits to develop for the PS4 for months already so being ready for Autumn / Winter release is feasible.

I'd not thought about us being so far behind the other markets, although its no surprise I suppose.

Not too fussed by when, it's the price that's the biggest thing for me as to whether I get it straight away or wait.

Yep I agree. If they're going to do it, it won't be straight away as they've already announced the launch on current consoles. I'm kind of hoping they're doing a red dead sequel as their first next gen game.

Agent, if its ever going to come out, probably go next gen now?

Consoles still offer value for money. More so than ever right now, there cheap compared to when they launched and developers are still squeezing extra out of them.

You can pick a PS3 up for 150 quid, you can't buy any type of pc for 150 solely for gaming.

Build me a PC for that price, case, psu, motherboard, graphics card, ram, hard drive. I'm struggling. Even when the 360 was 300 quid I'd struggle to build a PC that would match it and that's seven years ago. Even when the ps3 was 425, you couldn't build a PC for that, that would run the equivlent of kz2 let's say.

Dirty Harry just said his xps420 outperforms a console, those cost over a grand and if it does, it barely outperforms, consoles are designed to play games, not run program's in the background and have an operating system like windows and perform various other functions. You see a game like Far Cry 3 looks brilliant on my PC, it looks great on consoles still, with old technology in a fixed design, games still look good, I'd wager far cry 3 on ps3 and Xbox 360 look far better than what an xps420 can deliver when it was first released for more than three times the price of a 360 and more than twice what the ps3 launched at.

I've bought 4 consoles form different manufacturers(Sega,Sony,Microsoft,Nintendo) for the past 4 generations. There's no new home console this gen so I'm in limbo. Will probably give it a couple of years.

I wasn't being a fan boy, I was making a point to iSmiff.

The convenience of sticking a DVD into a drive and having it load almost completely negates the issues I have with the drop in quality graphically, the only thing I don't like about console gaming is how it tends to dumb down titles for the mouth breathers who like big arrows pointing them in the direction they need to go.

I will probably buy a next gen console (probably x-box), my first console since the Sega Saturn, I'll use my PC for games I think deserve the horsepower.
