I'm not that great at chess but even I know garbage moves when I see them.  Trent, what's going on?

He was on the news at 10 last night, seemed chuffed to get 17 moves.

It's an oft quoted phrase that my wife and i throw to eachother for laughs, from when she was playing online chess and her opponent typed out:

'Learn some fucking openings and elevate yourself from your clueless c*nt'.

Been remembering it today seeing Trents game  ;D. I know he's up against one of the best that's ever played the game, but yeah... 1. ... d6 to 1. e4? I've never played d6 to e4 so don't really know it, but if I get d6 to my e4, I just think im going to win (tho am bound to have lost to it at some point).

Looks very self taught, but fair fucks to him. May not have played 5 min blitz either. Different game to 'come on, hurry up'. Just needs a couple of hours every day with a tutor on international breaks. Chuffed for him  :thumbup

edit: the moves:

e4 d6
d4 Nf6
Nc3 Bd7
e5 Ng8
f4  Be6
Nf3 g6
d5 b6
dxe6 fxe6
Ng5 dxe5
Qxd8+ Kxd8
Nf7+ Kd7
Nxh8 Bg7
Nf7 Kc8
Bc4 Kd7
Ng5 Nc6
Bxe6+ Kd6

Don't really have a big problem with d6. It's unusual, but surely you can make it work. Not with the amount of mistakes made afterwards though. Giving away your Bishop? Losing your Rook in a fork that can be seen from miles away? That looked like someone playing who knows very little about chess except how the pieces move. And I'm saying that as someone who's not really a good player... ;)

Would enjoy watching a crossbar challenge. Carlsen was given 1 min to play his moves, Trent 5... so shall we say 5 shots to one? Think that evens things up ;D

When I first watched it... I just assumed Trent would be playing white, plus the video had Carlsen at the top, so I thought Carlsen was taking the piss with d6 at first. I dunno... if someone plays d6 I'm all in. You'd have to learn some trickery to get away with d6. Everytime I see it I go wtf?!  ;D There are 20 options available to black in his first move, and I think d6 is 2nd only to b6 as the very worst.

d6... 2. d4

So now you own the centre. White can play you about like a kitten playing with wool. Am sure there are great drawing chances blah blah, but no, d6 is wrong.  ;D

You can't play chess when you're in a bad mood. I'll still reach for it when I'm in one occassionally, but it's nah. No such thing as angry chess.

You need peace.

Having said that, some of my best games (and I play about 10 3 min blitz games/day on average) have been played listening to meaty music. Aggression is fine, but needs channeling properly. As with everything I guess.

Was hoping to go and see a day of the title match. Tickets finally got announced way too late for me and clashed.

Really looking forward to it tho. Didn't give Caruana much of a chance when it was first confirmed, but think there'll be something in this.

He might be doing comms for German viewers? Not sure. Still a good line up for chess24 members with Svidler and Sopiko Guramishvili tho, with the added bonus of some eye candy thrown in + Grishuk and Giri chipping in. I really hope they bring in some guests too... bound to have mentioned this before, but they just have to pop in for a bit, have a chat about the game and stuff. A trick chess comms miss i think.

Where's the best place to find free LIVE commentary for this? Or any place for that matter... Anybody know?

had a chance to look into comms etc today. Big tug-of-war going on and a big thing is being made about Agon, the big commercial cheese in chess it seems, threatening people online with posting moves up on social media before their 30 minute curfew is up.

Very sad to see chess being treated in this way in what is the main event. I WILL be posting moves up online before the 30 min curfew is up, when and if I see fit by the way.

Should be a televised event in this country. Am very passionate about this. I think this match should be free to air round the world but that's something else, but should definitely be aired HERE, as we're hosting the bloody thing. Would make for great television.

This brings me back to comms in general... got to have guests! Bring in 1 new guest each game for one hour, or 30 mins even... not 'famous' people... chess people.

Should be a media tycoon me.

I don't know anything really about either of their games... what type of game they like to play. I knew about Kasparov's game, and read a book on Kramnick so k i n d a knew what might happen and what definitely wouldn't. Kramnick playing 1. e4 for instance ;D

So... am intruiged!

See, if I was a media tycoon, I'd have paid Kramnick £500,000 to play 1. e4 in one game, just so I could get the shots of Kasporov wriggling in his chair with excitement. (privately obv)

Been painful trying to follow it today. It's grim out there. The world stage should be the window that attracts people to chess and to be what it could become. It requires access. Worldwide, free to air access. Just promote chess with that at the forefront of your branding psycho babble. Up it and give it air you bastards.

Was glad to at least catch bits from the American broadcast... I like them, but everytime I peer in, they're busy working out shit... when all I want to see really is the current board position, and to have no commentary at all.

Did love the great conversation with Kasparov tho. That was special.

Technically, the adjudicator played e4 after Woody Harrelson mistakenly played d4. Caruana's face seeing d4 was a picture!

Have been enjoying bus rides etc imagining a scenario where I was the big chess tycoon and was secretely paying these guys huge sums of money, just so I could ask random people to make the first move. Not many but...

I was one of seemingly few people to have seen 'Videogate'. A short film of Caruana's preparation. If you don't know about it.. forgive me...

Seen a few people saying it was 2 mins long. I seemed to remember it being 3 something. I have it in my head as 3:46, not sure why. It popped up in my youtube recommends so clicked it (obv).

I did double take when I saw the close up of the monitor have to say ;D, but it also could have been quite innocent too. I also thought the passing of a book of games played between Carlsen and Karjakin a bit I dunno... creepy. Ha.

Really wish this thing could be an easier thing to follow tho. I like bits of the American show, but I miss Svidler and Grishuk. Does Chess24 do a +1 hour delayed (free) screening at all? Haven't thought to check that.

Could also have been seen by 346 or 3460 people. I saw it at 2 am I think.

Another thing that struck me about it, was that Caruana was staring at a set of plastic pieces ... the kind of set you'd get at poundstretcher or in the pub. That really perturbed me ;D Head on his folded arms stretched out on the table staring at the board.

There was also some footage of them relaxing/excercising in an indoor/outdoor basketball court but none of them had ever played basketball god love em. Compare and contrast with some footage of Carlsen I saw playing footy today. He's OK... looks like The Cube in fact. The Square then. Here all week.

Still don't know who won the last game. Draw I imagine? ;D Left it after the rooks exchanged near the end. Great to follow it live all of a sudden. Not sure who/how what;s gone on there, but you HAVE to make these things live!

The world championship chess final should just be free to air and that's fucking it as far as I'm concerned. Everyone who wants to be arsed to cover it should be allowed to.

Thought Giri was great too. Had this image in my head about him as he often gets the piss taken out of him for drawing games (this is the level I'm at with knowledge of international chess) Got totally lost sometimes with the speed of conversation between the 3 of them. Hope chess never loses the idea that it should 'dumb down'.

And also had a chance to lump it up there at the end.

Think tomorrow could be good. Not exactly sure when they start (hopefully 1pm), the time limits involved (1 hour for 40?) or the whole set up yet, but might get the board out and just listen. Dipping into the analysis as i often have to do can be hard work!

Also yet to watch a game from the very start too. Can do that tomorrow. Have ideas in my head that I'm going to get loads done tomorrow ;D

Starts at 3pm. Damn.

'The format on Wednesday, starting at the usual time, will be as follows - if there’s a winner in any of these mini-matches he takes the title with no more games played:

4 rapid games: 25 minutes for all moves for each player, plus a 10-second increment per move
    2 blitz games: 5 minutes plus a 3-second increment
    2 blitz games: 5 + 3
    2 blitz games: 5 + 3
    2 blitz games: 5 + 3
    2 blitz games: 5 + 3
1 Armageddon game: White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw makes Black the World Champion''

It was basically all over after that wasn't it?

My mind has been blown apart in the last 24 hours reading , and watching one or two games on youtube about AlphaZero - the new chess supercomputer.

All of this shit goes WAAAY over my head, but this AlphaZero thing goes beyond all human comprehension, and takes science into the realms of art and back again. It played god knows how many games against the top chess program 'Stockfish' and took it to the cleaners.

Stockfish was programmed by humans, and had 1000's of games played by the top players pumped into its database. To put things into perspective... you can download a chess app onto your phone and you can basically be up against Deep Blue - the computer programe that beat Kasparov in 1997. Now, in 2018, we have reached another dimension with AlphaZero.

The only thing that was pumped into AlphaZero was the basic rules of chess. No tactics, no gambits... nothing, and after 4 hours of playing with itself, it came up with devestating poetry. No human that plays with itself for that long can register results like that.

4 hours. 600 years we've spent trying to fathom this game and it blows your head off in a morning. Incredible.

A book is coming out in January about it all... but this is a taster of what it can do:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/bo5plUo86BU" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/bo5plUo86BU</a>

Haven't really been keeping up bar the sad news of Kramnick retiring. Fair fucks to him. Lost total interest in the game there. Need to watch the Svidler v Carlsen games tho at some point.

If anyone plays chess on chesshotel.com... I play as TheFall or SunRa or a band I'm listening to at the time or recently.. as 'Divvy'. Got up to 1300+ rated (as 'Divvy') for the first time. Just saying...

2 min blitz games only (atm).

edit. Get some fucking weird comments sometimes. There's a Russian who keeps calling everyone a wimp (am assuming it's everyone because he at least resigns after)

I've gone down to 2 min blitz now. Started at 10, then 5, then 3 then 2. 1 doesn't interest me. Gets ridiculous. At 2m... I can swim with chess plankton.

Am doing this 1. Nf3 thing atm. Often transposes into a Queens Gambit (preferable), tho if after 1... d5 2 c4... if he pushes his d pawn to 2... d5... I get a bit irked. Am enjoying the fad of h4 some moves later.
