Seems to be from here https://twitter.com/HayleyWright

No idea who she is but she's followed someone who writes for the Guardian so perhaps there's something to it?

Again though, I think if there was one of the major journos would have said something about it by now. Probably just a wind up.

I'd be amazed if it's true that he's hanging up his boots. Lad's earning a bucketload of money at the moment and I doubt the injury is so bad it forces him to do that at his age. Hope not, he wasn't great here but seems a likeable enough guy and, well, he scored the winner at Wembley vs the Bitters! :D

West Ham not the most popular of clubs but I'd feel for them if it was true. First Dean Ashton, now Andy. Highly unlikely though.

Just a twitter rumour really. The girl on the internet says she's heard it from two reliable sources. But then I could post something like that on Twitter for a laugh - doesn't mean it'd be true.

Probably the same way he passed a medical here.  I think, and hope, this is all bollocks.  He's a likeable lad and it wasn't his fault he had that absurd price tag hanging around his neck, that said if it is true thank fuck we sold him rather than send him out on loan again.

I don't think it's true, but assuming it was, would what they paid in the summer be covered by insurance?

Two price tags - the amount the West Ham paid for him was very high too, given what he'd done in the year or two before.  Feel for the lad.

This article does paint the injury as a rare and fairly serious one:

I remember the rumours about Gerrard retiring after he had his groin op a couple of seasons ago and then got an infection, turned out to be bollocks too.

There's no way this is true, if he was still out injured this time next year then it might be a possibility.

We're barely 3 months into the season and into his contract, I think they'd leave it a little longer before jumping to such a huge decision

Actually didn't West Ham have something similar with Dean Ashton? That would be a blow losing two young England strikers through injury.

Didn't Carroll pick up an injury at Newcastle after he fell off a stool after doing a shot of jaegermeister?

He's a good lad Andy, but another English player more interested in the booze and partying than becoming a top class footballer

Its surprising Gerrard still walks straight after the infection in his bollocks.

Footballers are sometimes insured for injuries but this is an interesting one. ou would hope that they'd do something to help him out, but I don't see why they'd be bound to fulfill his contract if he can't do the same.

the hammers put in a huge claim to the FA as ashtons injury happened on international duty. they claimed for 10m, dunno what happeneed.

newcastle did something similar with michael owen cos he was injured in world cup and missed nearly a year while they paid him 100k a week

mind you we paid that to joe cole who did even less and he was meant to be fit

I don't think it's true, but assuming it was, would what they paid in the summer be covered by insurance?

Depends on what is covered in the insurance. If you hypothetically buy a house with dry rot, it's hard to get insurance cover which offers a pay out should your house get dry rot.

edit: That fundamentally was the problem West Ham had with Ashton, his ankle which got crocked wasn't covered by his insurance.

I wouldnt have thought so, if he is retiring. Id guess he'd leave it as long as possible too so he continue to pick up his big wages, which is one of numerous reasons this is highly likely to be bollocks.

I also have it on good authority that a senior member of the England management team sniffs owls.  I won't mention any names.

He got too much too quickly.

That's the real problem with English footballers, they lose motivation, desire and a love for the game. Becomes all about being a celebrity, boozing and womanizing.
Let us never forget Rafael Benitez and what he did for us. A fighter full of guts and passion. A gentleman full of class and dignity. A football manager full of intelligence and pure genius. A Legend.
Adios Rafa, buena suerte.
