Been average for a number of years to be honest; It's just now, after those good England games he has become a world beater in the eyes of the media. To me, I think he's got the same level of skill and natural ability of Babel, but unlike babel, he uses this ability. I believe that if we got him, he would be like what we saw from babel in the first season; a good player for the team, but not nesacerilly a world beater, or someone who could make something out of nothing when were playing poorly.

I'd have him at the right price, definate improvement, and as stated, would be a good member of the team, but I won't really be bothered if we miss out on him

I think its down to the fact that villa have sold two of there better players in the last two summers and he is regressing with it. Three years ago he nearly got 20 assists which is not exactly easy. Id take him for 10-15 million and he seems to have a good relationship with glen and that they know each others runs and positioning.

The season he got half those assists he had Mellberg and Laursen in the team, didn't he? They were awesome at set pieces.

He could easily do the same with Carroll, but it wasn't from an obscene amount of creativity in open play. Mind you, Cahill and Carroll in the box with Adam and Young delivering the set plays would shit-up most teams in the league.

If Villa are putting a 25 million price tag on Young all they're going to get is an unhappy player for a season and lose him for nothing next summer

Were we not strongly linked with Elia during January? Will we be going for him during the summer?

We were coming up to january I belive, but I think we were more interested in Affelley at the time, and by january, all these rumours simply disappeared. If we could, I think we would prefer to get Affelley from Barca

Yeah, I do agree with that, just saying he's not an essential target in my eyes, if he doesn't come it won't really harm us.

One clear positive though is the fact that in that season where he had a ridiculous amount of assists, one of the main reasons waas because he was taking the set peices, and one thing we have desperatly need for as long as i remember, was someone who was decent at set peices. It's even more important now with Carroll, when we can potentially be extremely dangerous from all our set pices

Pretty sure most of the goals he supplied Carew with were those flat in-swingers, Carew flicking em on front post or getting on the end of a midfield runner's knock down.

Carroll can turn a shite cross into a Worldie. Monday being a poor example cause Meireles did the 'Ashley Young' thing, and Carroll did the 'Carew' thing.

A lot of Andy's goals have been just long floated balls where he gets the chance to read the flight and use the neck muscles that would make a mountain goat blush. Who said that one first?  :P

Btw Juan, saw someone comparing him to Chris Sutton, you think there's something in that? Answer without using the word's 'Christian' and 'Vieri'.

£25m for Young?!  Well, I suppose that brings Charlie Adam's price back down from £35m to about £12m then if we're going to use Holloway's 'comparo-price-ometer'.

If it is true that we'll sign Larson as well as Marveaux for free then getting Young & Willan (sp?) of Shakhtar will solve us lots of problems regarding our wide play. That way we'll have three forwards next season with Carroll, Suarez & Kuyt while Ngog might get loaned or sold. Kuyt can also play out wide if we're really desperate and thin whether due to injuries or suspensions. After all Kuyt has 9 goals and 7 assists in 27 games this season, while the best footballer on the planet, Gareth Bale has just 7 goals and 1 assist in 26 games.

Personally I think Villa are just trying to spike the price up, they know better than anyone they'll never get the 25m tag they want, Ozil and Khedira are terrific players and were sold to Madrid way cheaper than this price (18m and 12m respectively and Euros not pounds as well) mainly because they were on the last year of their contracts, Villa knows that keeping him means that they sell him for free the summer after that as well as having an unhappy player who doesn't want to stay in your team and who'll cause trouble.

Kenny targets PSG star if Cahill bid fails

Published 23:00 13/04/11 By David Maddock

Liverpool will turn to France's next major star Mamadou Sakho if their campaign to land Gary Cahill ends in failure.

Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish has earmarked the Bolton and England centre half as a major priority when he is given funds in the summer.

But the Reds manager is painfully aware that Wanderers are determined to hold out until the bidding reaches £20million.

And with moneybags Manchester City also in the race, Dalglish has wisely lined up a back-up, with 21-year-old Sakho his preferred choice.

The Paris St Germain defender has already made a massive impact in France after winning his first full cap in the recent victory over England.

Sakho is doubly attractive because he can also play left back as well as centre half, and would cost only half the fee Cahill is likely to command.

Dalglish has other targets, with Aston Villa's Ashley Young, Charlie Adam of Blackpool and Ipswich wonderboy Connor Wickham, who only turned 18 last week, on his list.

The Liverpool boss wants to concentrate on exciting young stars, after presiding over a massive improvement in the youth structure at Anfield since he returned to the club 18 months ago.

King Kenny gave teenager John Flanagan his debut against City on Monday night, and wasn't disappointed as the defender turned in an immaculate performance.

And his display was further proof of the giant strides made with young players coming through the ranks in the past 12 months.

Dalglish originally returned to the club as an ambassador with special responsibility for academy recruitment, and he has maintained that interest by promoting several kids into his first team squad.

Liverpool have seriously failed to develop young, local talent in the past decade, since Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher burst onto the scene at the end of the 1990s.

Yet this season Jay Spearing and Martin Kelly have already established themselves, along with Jonjo Shelvey and now Flanagan knocking at the door.

Other exciting young stars such as Conor Coady, Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling and 16 year old goalscoring sensation Adam Morgan all seem to have a big future at Anfield, and Dalglish wants to ensure that happens by continuing to identify the best young talent.

Flanagan showed enough in 90 minutes against England winger James Milner to suggest he can make the grade, and previous academy graduate Carragher believes it is a massive boost for the future of the club.

"I'm delighted for John and I think it gives the whole club a lift when you see a local lad come through - the supporters love it," he said.

"I think at the Academy it gives all of them a lift. The young lads at the Academy, it shows them it can be done.

"There's a bit of competition now between him and Kelly for the local lads. It's great for everyone really that you've got two local lads like that coming through.

"To be honest there's a few more down there so it's up to them lads to take their chance. Flanno's done that, but I'm pretty confident that there are more down there."

Great choice, loads of potential as well and will compliment Agger in the defence. But since when has Gary Cahill's price been £20m?

He is also on his last year and that means no way will Bolton get this price for him.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is lining up a sensational swoop for the former Kop idol Michael Owen.this summer.

The Manchester United striker is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to be offered a new deal by Mr. Ferguson.

The 31-year-old has been struggling with injuries since he left Liverpool in 2004, despite playing for the Red Devils, Real Madrid and Newcastle United.

Dalglish is prepared to gamble on the England international and sees Owen as ideal back up to Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

Being a free agent, Dalglish is prepared to offer him a chance to rebuild bridges with Liverpool fans following his departure from Anfield and his decision to join the Red Devils.

It is understood Owen still has a lot of admirers from within the Liverpool dressing room, notably Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

Owen has been linked with a move to Aston Villa to work under Gerard Houllier, but the Villa manager’s uncertainty over his own future has left the deal in doubt.

It is unclear whether the Kop fans would welcome the return of Owen, as they have constantly heckled their former hero at every opportunity.

This is frankly the kind of signing we should make,
rather than Cahill-especially because of the English tax.Cahill is very good but he will cost a pretty penny.

Christ, the prices of Adam, Young and Cahill seem to be rising by the minute. Madness. When you pay £23m for Suarez, a player who is younger, and with genuine potential to be world class, it's just ludicrous teams expect the same amount for these players, especially when they only have a year left of their contracts. Would love all three no doubt, but seems like the actual price for just one, should be the price of all three!

Enrique too, if the £15m price is true, is insane, but would be great to get him, having a top, reliable left back is something we haven't had since Riise's decline around 5 years ago.

Would love to see us get Larsson and Marveaux too, two players who can actually play as wingers, beautiful, especially as they would cost us nowt, and could replace the fruitless Cole, Maxi and Jova.

Maybe Villa have said that because when they sell young for an undisclosed fee they can say it's nearer their mark than the mark he goes for?

Sakho would be great if Cahill wasn't available which I don't think he will be, I just think he'll go to Man Utd

I'd still have Cahill over Sakho i think.

Cahill is definitely more comfortable on the ball than Sakho, and he won't need the time to bed down to a new league. Especially seen as Sakho is still quite young for a centre back.

Man City bidding is of course a problem, but not as much as it would have been 2 or even 1 year back, when they were willing to throw silly money at any player they wanted. I don't think the owners will allow huge bids for players in the Cahill bracket. So i reckon it'd be a matter of matching City's bid if they do make one, and getting Kenny and co to convince him we're the better choice.

Can't see how Cahill will get many 1st team minutes at Utd when they have Vidic, Ferdinand and Smalling.

He'd be 1st choice here and a natural successor to Carra.

Think with Ferdinand starting to decline through injuries and him not featuring not so much this season, he might get more play time there as I think he is better than Smalling.

Still think his future will be better here, if we don't get him there is a lot of solid defenders whom we can get cheaply, outside from the PL as in Kjaer and Sakho or from the PL as in Scott Dann for example.

Would love Cahill, he would really improve our spine.

He would come in, sell Soto, and I would then even sell Skrtel IF! we could get Sami back on a free. I don't care if he's 37, nearly 38, he'd still be the best back up, if not the best back up, we could hope for.

Won't be easy to get Cahill though if Man City get involved but I think he would be great for us. If I was him though I'd refuse a move to City, problem with being able to buy whatever you want is you quickly get bored with what you have and want something new. If Cahill has one bad season there or even have a season they'd buy the hottest new Cb and send him to the bench.

25 mill? no chance maybe 2 years ago when he was in great form.

Not even then. He is a decent player but far from the world beater and with 12 months left on his contract he couldn't commend even 1/2 of that evaluation.

I have bought the recent FourFourTwo magazine and Carroll was our main target in Summer, so I'd expect us to go for another striker in Summer. Comolli also said we won't be buying players where promising youngsters are otherwise there's no point in the academy. He also said he wants to sign big players.

to be honest I'd prefer us to spend really big on 3 players and just use academy players to fill in the rest.  They've proven they can (so far, anyway).

If we went for English talent this summer then top of the list for me would be Cahill and Albrighton, both are very good players and that Albrighton is a tricky fucker in any match, just give him the space and ball and he'll end up with 10+ assists easily.

Probably bullshit, but still, not a bad choice for cb if it comes to fruition

Always find it strange that they only ever mention the English lads. Erm, Pacheco and Suso?
Fool, if it wasn't for Sergei here, both you and your cousin be cadaverous mo'fuckers.

Personally I'd like us to pursue much better players than Cahill and Albrighton  if we want to seriously contend for top honors next year.

Cahill is a decent option but being English we may have to pay the significant premium (apparently Bolton is expecting 20m..) to acquire him and on that basis we may be able to potentially get Subotic or Albiol for the same money or less.

Albrighton is young and upcoming talent but is not even Villa's first choice (I know tough when you already have 2 wingers in the first team but still..) and I'm not convinced that he would provide an instant impact, which we would need nor I think Villa would sell.

If you want the similar type of player like Alrbrightton, Marko Marin imo would be a better choice but I hope we can bring better than either of them

Whenever I have seen him, Sakho has looked reckless and way too eager, getting pulled out of position and diving into tackles. Plus he looked rather average on the ball. So I am not convinced that he would be an improvement on Skrtel except for his age...
Cahill on the other hand seems a more controlled, smarter defender.
Fergies so purple i had to turn down the contrast on the tv.
