What are people's experiences with the BT Home Hub 5? Just moving from Sky to BT (£140 Quidco, £100 Prepaid MasterCard and cheaper monthly bill). Is the Home Hub any good or better replaced with something better?

One of my girls has exhausted the data allowance on her phone due to the Hub 5 being shite. My 3 kids say it's awful Graeme. I refuse to believe BT when they question its positioning. To locate it centrally in the house would mean placing it on the floor outside the kitchen fucking door. I'm sick of complaining to them so I'm looking for a booster now.

As usual with my experience on Virgin Media, the upload speed is one of the weaknesses.

Their promise to double my speed (as per their massive advertising campaign) has mystically slipped from April 2016 to February 2017, which is Virgin's other big weakness.

Chronic bullshitting.  :-X

Very weird. This is on my phone though, when I did it on my Google nexus player my download stayed at 28mbp but my upload went up to 32mpb ;D like I said, very weird.

Would you not normally expect a VPN to slowdown your internet speeds?

It should do yes so fuck knows what's going on. It can't be dud data as the Ookla speed test is independent to the VPN?

Only thing I can think of is BT are not giving me what I should be getting for some reason and this VPN with their servers get me what I should be getting. After all super fibre as sold to me should be speeds up to 80mbp but after agreeing to it I'm suddenly told I can only get upto 30 ish. Something wrong there.

BT were poor when I used them in the past and I feel annoyed to be going back to them.

How do you find Kodi streams with your speeds? Does it buffer okay when watching on demand stuff and also streaming live TV?

Just moved home and went from BT Infinity to VirginMedia, day 1 of Virgin Media was not an impressive experience, evening speeds on the 200mb package down to 15mb, hopefully it picks up from here.

Maybe I got spoiled on BT, the cabinet was right outside where I lived, so I got the full 76mb, but more importantly I basically got that or very close to it, all the time, and that was with me downloading over 300GB a month.

Films/TV hardly ever buffer (can't remember the last time one did) and Sportsmania very rarely buffers for me either. I don't watch any other live TV so can't comment on that side of things.

Annoyingly BT could only guarantee 16mb on the line here, must be a bit away from the cabinet. if it had been up around 50 or more I would have stayed with them for sure.

At least I do a lot of automated loading of US TV overnight so that goes through when the speed isn't throttled anyway, evening speeds aren't great but seem to have settled down slightly so they're a bit faster than BT would have been here.

Still a bit disappointing though.

Felt I should post here. As a LFC fan living in Hull, we have a choice when it comes to broadband: use KC or don't.

However, they have been rolling out their Optical Fibre Lightstream Service, which is Fibre right to your house, not just the street. So today I got it installed:

Anyone on vodafone or EE broadband?

I am with EE (get extra ten gig on mobile deal) for fibre.
Us d to be with talk talk, but I feel that these providers are kind of all the same.
Have had to turn on and off the router just once since July 15, because wifi dropped out, other than that I have had no dealings with customer service etc.
If I was to swap mobile phone provider from EE, I would probably also swap my broadband provider too, the extra data is a deal breaker for me.

Better compared to my old place where I was lucky to get a 1mb download speed, but still embarrassingly slow compared to some on here.

BT are being exceptionally slow, as slow as my broadband was it seems, in rolling out decent speeds to a lot of areas and the Govt. don't seem interested in forcing the issue with them.

its gonna cost bt to build more infrastructure.

they also dont have another big competitor to push them.

here in spain we have orange competing on the network side.

saying that putiing nodes in place will be a lot cheaper here as land prices in the uk will be a lot higher.

Anyone ever phoned up BT to get a better deal?
i've been with them 2 years now, i pay £29.56 and £16.99 line rental and thats for the infinity 2 unlimited package, i just phoned up to say i've had a letter from vodafone as my mobile is with them offering me up to 76mbps (same as infinity 2) unlimited for £10 a month first 12 months and then £20 after, with £18 line rental, and the closest she would do is offer me £20 a month for infinity 2, she even said why don't i change my package to infinity 1 (up to 38mbps) to save money and i said what's the point in that when i can get the top speed elsewhere

I even said i really like BT as a company and would rather stay with them, still nothing, old stubborn she was could tell right away she wouldn't offer me anything as good as the others

dont think speed matters imo unless your a heavy downloader/streamer.

for online games or voip for instance quality of connection counts more.

https://www.voipreview.org/speedtest

surprised to find out i have variable ping and jitter ....upload consistency is lower (quite a bit sometimes) than download consistency.
the lower it is ive found the worse gaming is.....

dslreports is another good site for checking bufferbloat.

Could only be said by someone with a 300mb+ download speed  ;D

Go back to anything under 10mb download speed and you won't be saying that - trust me!

Yeah, that's what the local ISP who keeps sending me mailers saying they can "double my speed for half the price" say when I call them up and ask if they can really double my speed.
Then, all of a sudden it becomes "Well, you know, you don't really need that much speed... and you can save some money by switching to our plan at 1/10th your speed..."

I don't stream, but I download on occasion. And just in general, I like things to be fast.
Yes, I got by on a 28.8 modem from 1996-1999 (our phone lines couldn't handle faster than that). But now, with so much garbage on most websites, I'm doing what I can on my end to minimise the wait.

for online games or voip for instance quality of connection counts more.

I don't do VOIP, and I don't think a text-based MUD cares too much about "quality of connection" considering it was fine on the aforementioned 28.8.

https://www.voipreview.org/speedtest

That puts me at:
Ping: 39ms
Download: 620Mbps
Upload: 46.6Mbps
Packet loss: 33.3%
But, again, I never use VOIP

Be interesting to know peoples download and upload consistency?
mine is about 98% on download but upload varies between 60-90%.

p2p games are horrible at times...thats fifa and a few others....
trying to convince my isp they need to make consistency equal because it causes issues in gaming.

Which site is considered more accurate, this or speedtest.net?

Speedtest shows my download as 33meg higher and latency as 100ms lower, it also seems to match other sites better.
