He's due a couple of goals soon, just the one for us so far. Seems to like scoring 3 in the league  ;D

I am very surprised that he never seem under pressure. Even a bad back pass or the opposing team aggressive pressing, he can always find a pass forward. 9 out of 10 that pass turns into an attacking threat. Excellent Matip!! Keep it up!

Such a good player, the only thing is I wish he'd be perhaps a bit more aggressive at times. He has all the qualities to really dominate the opponents. Pace, strength, height, technique and awareness. We're fortunate to have him. Or maybe it's about time we had a good cb like him.

He seems a little bit like Sakho that he takes a while to get back into it after injury. Laughable what Harry Redknapp said about him the other week.

Class, composure, quality. Absolutely adore him; it's mind blowing that we managed to get a 50-60m defender for nothing.

Too easily outmuscled by Rondon on their big chance, but other than that he didn't put a foot wrong all match. More decisive than usual with his aerial clearances too.

He will be much better in his second year, would love to see him have an injury free run in the team, that would do him the world of good. Really good prospect though.

outmuscled or a poor decision? looked like he tried to make an interception and missed (yes while bodying him up).  Other wise was awesome including some anger-esque marauding runs forward.

He's definitely becoming my favorite defender since Hyypia.

I know he won't get much credit because our overall defensive record is not great but I'm convinced by the end of next season he'll be referred to as world-class.

Our overall defensive record is poor but not so much when he's on the pitch. 24 starts 24 goals conceded, significantly better than other CBs. Partnership with Lovren 13 goals in 15 games, significantly better than any other partnership.

Calmness, composure, intelligence, competence, passing ability - what's not to like. Get another CB of his level and we'll finally have a defence good enough to win the league.

Don't care what everyone says this guy is as good as anyone in the league.

Matip - Lovren 13 goals conceded in 17 games. That is elite. Probably the best CB partnership we had since Rafa days.

It also proves it's not the system it's the personnel, Lucas and Klavan are 3 levels below that's why we struggled this season though if we end up with 42 goals conceded in 38 games it will be a decent improvement to 3 previous seasons.

On a free too. Surely the lesson here is never spend a lot of money on Centre backs?

I'm absolutely blown away by his performances this season. As first seasons go this was as impressive as anything we've seen from new CBs in a very long while.

27 league games - 26 goals conceded (while playing good number of games with either Lucas or Klavan), fantastic partnership with Lovren - 18 games 13 goals conceded (a far cry from 1.3 goals we've been conceding per game for 3 previous years).

If Klopp can't build a fantastic defence around this guy who's only starting to reach his peak at 25, then I don't know what to say. And on top of all this we probably saved around 40-50m by getting him on free which will now allow us to find a partner for him who is just as good. I'm fully expecting our defence to be one of the better ones in the league next season.

47 goals conceded in 47 games played (all comps).

Good to see Klopp has it down to an average of 1 goal per game instead of the 1.25 or more we've been conceding each season since Rafa left.

Sadly it's 1.11 per game for the Premiership this season overall, but after our 2-2 draw at home to West Ham (our 15th league game) we conceded 22 goals in the next 23 league games.

Our defence has definitely improved even though it didn't look like it at times, the Bournemouth 4-3 capitulation STILL pisses me off. :no

Anyone else just as concerned having Matip as 1st choice, as Lovren? Neither are good enough for me and I've never really understood the Matip hype.

He was outstanding the first half of last season. Been ok since.

He's by far the least of the defensive concerns. I'll reserve proper judgement on him till he has Van Dijk next to him rather than the current mess. Would also help him, and the rest of be fair, if they had a defensive midfielder who actually offered a modicum of protection to them.

Not having that, he gets way to many free passes, despite many, many fundamental errors. For me, we need two new centre halves.

Search function doesn't seem to be working. VVD or not is there any chance we can welcome back Sakho too? Seems a shambles that he's still rotting on the sidelines whilst our defense plummets to new lows.

So not challenging for that header at the near post for the first goal is Lovrens and Mignolets fault.

He very poor today, his passing was dreadful.

I always feel Matip takes the responsibility to get something started in an attacking sense though. Many time's he plays a forward pass on the deck when our midfield are passing it sideways, he tries to find firmino or someone.

Didn't think he did today, lots of sidewards and backwards passes. He tried to go forward a few times and lost the ball too.

I want to see Matip next to Van Dijk. Think that would sort a few of his issues. It can't be easy playing next to Lovren and not knowing what the hell he's going to do.
