"Ruthless finishing" is a bit of a hyperbole, to be honest, especially for Liverpool (he seems to be far more clinical for the Oranje).

Fantastic player though, Gini. Love watching him shield the ball in tight spaces under loads of pressure. Never seems to be lose it!

My favourite trait though is his bright, infectious smile. He seems to have a really good vibe about him and gets along with everyone. One of those who is tough to dislike, especially if he beams his 1,000-watt smile at you.

Really? Hyperbole? I struggle to think of an example of his less than clinical finishing. He’s not a prolific goalscorer even by CM/AM standards but when the opportunity presents, he always gets it on target and usually with pinpoint precision - see Barcelona, Everton, Atletico. And I referred to his value to the Dutch NT, which you acknowledge. Maybe “laser-guided” a better description than ruthless then if you prefer.

Regardless, he’s one of the few players, even in our team of superlatives, who appears to play on pure instinct. You can’t see his thought process because he’s already made the decision about 5 seconds earlier before he’s even received the ball. My favourite Wijnaldum moment was the glorious nutmeg flick/attack that left that lump Maguire for dead. Vast majority of players would, anticipating the challenge, control that ball and look to lay it off square to a teammate, but not Gini.

Not sure a “bright infectious 1000-watt smile” makes my list of attributes to highlight in a footballer but hey. Sure he always comes across as a really good guy, but make no mistake, there’s an intensely competitive and fierce spirit there (see goal celebrations) and I particularly liked his post-match attitude after the 4-0 last May, saying he was “angry” about not starting.

Anyway, looks like we’re securing him ASAP as I hoped...

Come on mate, I'm the last to criticise our players and Gini is boss+ as far as I'm concerned, but really, there have been quite a lot of occasions where
it has looked like he doesn't know what a ball even is, when on a goal-shooting opportunity.

I've mentioned before how changeable he can be; sometimes fiendishly clinical; other times, like, ''what's this spherical thing and what am I supposed to do with it?''

Fortunately it doesn't matter, as he is superb at what he is there to do.

I get your point except I don’t think it’s ever a case of poor finishing per se, just there are occasional games that completely pass him by, like he’s on a golf course rather than a football pitch.

I have no idea whether it’s some sort of tactical disconnect against particularly stubborn opposition or he’s had a bad night’s kip or something, but the inconsistency isn’t unusual even amongst elite players in this role and you only notice because it’s in stark contrast to the majority of the time that they're unplayable.

God knows I’ve seen entire games where De Bruyne looks like he’s caught somewhere between mild dyspraxia and thoughts he’s possibly left his gas oven on.

There's that, and I also suspect the Netherlands play comparatively poorer opposition than Liverpool? I mean, the Netherlands are a far stronger team than most of their opponents, so it also stands to reason that he's going to score more (because he gets more chances in a more advanced position).

He's the most underrated player in the league in my opinion.  He'd walk into any midfield in the country. The contract situation is a concern, I don't think he'll sign a new one, not because he wants to move elsewhere, but because it'll be his last big contract and he's probably looking for the security we won't offer at his age.  It doesn't alter the fact that he's been a brilliant signing and Klopp has turned him into a completely different player to the attacking one that plays for Holland.

That’s very true although we don’t see Memphis Depay score as freely for Netherlands in their recent matches. Maybe theirs is a system that doesn’t need Gini to play deep whereas we really needed him to play deeper to recycle the ball. There is simply no one else in the team doing that and as playing Fabinho alone in that position normally weakens us.

We have 3 starting central midfielders that is in their or coming into 30s so I can understand why the club is nervous about the contract situation.

But it's difficult to be optimistic about the future of any player who let's their contract run into its final year. I'd love for him to sign a new one, rumours linking us with midfielders in the same situation as Wijnaldum lead me to think we might be preparing for the eventuality that he won't.

He’s a strange player. Big game player, and his best performances in a red shirt have been in the big games (Roma, Barcelona) and he’s a strong mentality in the squad. No doubt we’ll miss him when he’s gone. But it amazes me how anonymous he can be when he’s not up against a good side. It’s like he has a switch.
